Title: Sylvan
Post by: Erendis on Thu, 2005-10-13, 12:47:50
  Hi everybody!

Want to write about a great german band called Sylvan

The  5 guys come from Hamburg and have released 4 Albums yet.
First one was "Deliverance" - I have heard it often, but I´m honest, I don´t like parts of it....
Second "Encounters" - you can hear that they have developed, the vocals are clearer, music sounds more harmonic
Third "Artifical Paradise" - IMHO great, from beginnig to the end!
Fourth "X-Rayed" - Harder, I need several listenings before I really enjoyed it - but now I do ;)

Dont`t know how to describe their music  ???
listen yourself - examples of the last two cd´s here:
http://www.progrockrecords.com/shop/view.php?id=39 "artifical paradise" (best of all sic)
http://www.progrockrecords.com/shop/view.php?id=39 "x-rayed" (last one)

Vocalist Marco Glühmann - incredible voice (o.k. not at the first album, but he learned very well *g*)
Matthias Harder at drums, Sebastian Harnack bass ; Kay Söhl guitars, his brother Volker Söhl Keyboards.
The drummer has a side project called "Rain for a day" http://www.rainforaday.de/news/news.htm

And live - they are great  ;D   Saw them at the substage....great show, great music, but only few people there  :-\

Here is the link to their website: http://www.sylvan.de

Listen to the examples - and buy the stuff ;)

At last I want to say, that it might be for you as it was for me - I had to listen to all of their songs often but then it made "plink" and it was in my head (and went nervermore out ;) )

They started as Marillion clone(though high-quality one). But now, in my view, Sylvan's creation is TOO EXPERIMETAL.

I did own their first one but as Voyager says, it was a bit too generic and lacking in quility songs. I sold it on pretty quickly and haven't bothered with them since.

Always happy to give a band another chance though if someone recommends them strongly enough  ;D

Cheers  ;D

Exrtremely strong recommendation from here, mate. You (well, everybody!) should definitely try "Artificial Paradise" and "X-Rayed", they're fantastic albums.

Really good  (and wise) decision   :D

@ Voyager: that´s why I like them so much  ;)

Next year will be a good year for Sylan-Fans. Two new CDs are on the way...... How should I stand it to wait for soooooooooooo long *g*
Hope they are again live in Karlsruhe or somewhere nearby....

I have their first album which I actually like a lot, except for the last track which doesn't fit with the rest of the material.
Haven't checked out their newer material yet, sounds like I should!

And hi Erendis, good to see you're posting now! Did I persuade you or did you just find the time now? ;)

I must admit that I have listened to X-Rayed and I didn't like it that much but considering the recomendations of those here I will go and have another listen. ;D

And: Both of it ;)  Free day yesterday and now I`ve got little time..... before weekend-cleaning and picking up my little "monster" from kindergarden
btw: my postman was here :D

The last song of Deliverance.... hmmm... I´m a fan of JRRT - and the story they sung about is great - but the implementation (hope this is the right word...) is doubtable.... I laughed when heard for the first time ;)  but their new songs/Cds are muuuuuuuuuuuch better

Bye

*stop nodding.........getting dizzy...............*

I had the great pleasure, at ROSFest this year, to see Arena and Sylvan.  I was a major fan of both groups going in.

I've got all 4 of their albums.  The first two are pleasant enough listening, but it is with Artificial Paradise that they really hit their stride.  Great album, very approachable.  And X-Rayed continues their evolution.  It is heavier than A-P, not as song oriented, and will take a tad longer to get into, but it is certainly very rewarding as well, and very mature and cohesive.

I'm eagerly awaiting their 2006 double scoop!  ;)

I'm a big fan too.  Sawthem at Rosfest as well.   Artificial Paradise is an amazing work and I'm looking forward to future stuff from these guys.  Timeless Traces is one of the most captivating songs I've heard in awhile.  X-Rayed is good, but I keep coming back to AP.

You know the story bout Aldarion and Erendis?

Just open a poll :)

QuoteYou know the story bout Aldarion and Erendis?
Is it the story with the elf that jumps of his ship to the last shores to stay with his wife in ME? (or something like that?)

btw: Tolkien is the best imo :)

Yeah! I love sci-fi. My favourites are Asimov, Clarke , O.S. Card, Bear, Silverberg and recently Dan Simmons (Hyperions are SO great).

*bumb*

New album announcement, release date somewhere in December and it's going to be huge!

Quote from: Sylvan-newsAfter an intensive period of work during a few months on our new songs, the time has come to take you on the journey with us. A journey which began for us with a first jam session about one year ago and which will end at the end of this year: with the release of our 8th studio album!

The baby doesn't have a name yet, but  quite a big size - our new work will contain two audio CDs and will be divided into five chapters. But we won't tell you more at this point of time.

Matthias, Sebastian, Jan, Volker und Marco

So, a double album, divided into 5 chapters.

I think 'concept-album'.

Anyone?  *horns*

It's finally done: the newest SYLVAN album SCENERIES is finished. As you probably know, SCENERIES is divided into five long chapters. Here are the final names and
durations of these tracks:

Chapter 1: 'The Fountain of Glow' (14:50)
Chapter 2: 'Share the World with Me' (15:05)
Chapter 3: 'The Words You Hide' (20:10)
Chapter 4: 'The Waters I Traveled' (20:00)
Chapter 5: 'Farewell to Old Friends' (20:33)

To increase the anticipation for the release of the new CD, the band will provide you an excerpt of each chapter until the concert in december. They start today with 2:40 minutes of "The Waters I Traveled":

You can see/hear it on their website:

http://www.sylvan.de/sylvan_web/news_e.html

Promising indeed. I love the music of the band and the singer when he sings 'normally', but sometimes the singer is inclined to scream, don't like those parts.
