King Crimson - Discipline

My introduction to the Belew era.

Excellent purchase, a fresh new start for Crimson and the best of the three 80s Crimson albums. Amazing how Crimson reinvented themselves in an artistically credible fashion, where the other big prog bands more or less went pop/commercial.

I'm actually finding Discipline a bit challenging to start out with, but as we know a lot of the best prog takes several plays to really get it.  Red, which I just got a few weeks ago, clicked for me more immediately.

You should've gotten the 2-CD printer.  It includes the essential song, "Ink Cartridge Cloud."

Just bought:

Enslaved:  Vertebrae

Lookin forward to hearin it tonight.

I recently tested their studio album Ruun on a whim, thought they were one of many similar Norwegian black metal bands, but I sure was pleasantly surprised by it (and I wrote about this experience at the time).

Fona didnt have Ruun, but they had Vertebrae, which is the most recent Enslaved studio album, and somehow it ended up in my backpack  ???

Wiki writes this (Enslaved):  "Enslaved released the album Vertebrae in September 2008. On this particular album, many of their techniques, particularly harmonies, have been compared to Pink Floyd. After touring Europe extensively, Enslaved embarked on a North American tour with the progressive death metal band Opeth in May 2009."

J. Williamson "Son of the North" (Standish, Maine USA) writes on Amazon.com:  "What Enslaved has achieved in the last five years is the ability to wear the mantle of being the leaders in progressive black metal, a title which so few have even strived for. The journey really began with Isa and and is now culminating in Vertebrae. Yes, the other albums prior to Isa were leaning in the progressive direction, but Isa really drew the line in the sand that showed Enslaved as a progressively minded band with a desire to defy the conventions of black metal and create masterpieces of art that would stand as musical testaments, much like the progressive rock giants of the seventies: Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, Camel, King Crimson.

Vertebrae is truly going to be a hard album to top. Everything from the Floydesque clean vocal harmonies to the discordant guitar parts are all expertly woven together to create what is their current masterpiece. Truly, this is the album to buy this year, no doubt about it. If you liked Isa and Ruun, then you shouldn't even think twice about this purchase, and if you are an Enslaved fan, then your collection is seriously lacking without this album. Take my word for it: This album lives up to all of the hype."

Lastly Nontheistdavid "saytr38" (Missouri) writes on Amazon.com:  "I have seen many bands lately compared to Pink Floyd if they had gone black metal but this is The black metal Pink Floyd hands down. The clean vocals in many respects remind me of Richard Wright (RIP) and many of the guitar solos remind me of David Gilmour via the Meddle period of Pink Floyd. This is Enslaved's most mature album. Nevermind the Pink Floyd comparisons because this is just a band who has established its own sound. If you like progressive black metal I would highly recommend this cd."

Iggy, Jonesy, and Tomsy, I suggest you guys test this band  ;)

Nicky.
