Hello all!
I need your help.
My teacher ordered everyone in my class to do a presentation about a biological subject...
I want to do a presentation about sneezing, but it's very difficult to find information that is of a high level (what happens on the inside when you sneeze, what happens in the brain etc etc).
I found out that the official term for sneezing is "sternutation", but that doesn't help me much either...

Perhaps in other languages something interesting can be found?
I'm thinking German, French, Danish, Norwegian?

You would help me so much if you google around in your language and post something interesting here.

Appelmoes??

Mythbusters did tested if sneezing with your eyes open would make them pop out. It didn't, but it was still fun to watch. Just get that episode on dvd or something and show that to you class :P

Well, thanks! :)
I'm not gonna buy a DVD of course, but I did a search on YouTube and voila: http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=RoEqPnx7-Gs

Hilarious by the way. I fell off my chair from laughing, causing my back to serious damage again...

Anyway, thanks for the tip, I'm gonna use that YouTube fragment.
Any more ideas? Keep 'em comin'!

Again, Paco, Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sternutation

There are some good links at the bottom of the article (not yours this time)  ;D

And remember to look up all the words that you're not fully familiar with  ;)

Nicky.
So you've come of age
And so you want to meet God
Sure you can
He's right here next to me

PH

Thanks Nicky, but of course I've already looked that one up. But it's still too 'shallow'. I need something biological. Like "something triggers the sensors in your nose and [a chemical product] is released. This causes a [something] in your brain which orders the [whatever] to produce [something]. In order to sneeze properly [something] occurs and it's picked up by a [thing] etc etc" you get the idea.
Not the usual "when you look at the sun, you'll sneeze" stuff. Or "Little particles trigger your nostrills and you'll sneeze".

Thanks anyway.

Appelmoes??

Isn't it so that the nerve that transmit the sneeze reflex, is the same one that makes your eyes squint in bright light, or something? I know there's a connection, since looking into bright light can make a person sneeze without one of the other triggers.

Not all persons.
When I look into bright light all I get is a headache.

But then again, I don't sneeze very often. The last time I sneezed was a week ago...  ???

You keep records of when and how often you sneeze, Paco?!  :o   ;)

PH

Quote from: bluepony on Sat, 2008-03-22, 16:31:45You keep records of when and how often you sneeze, Paco?!  :o   ;)

No, not really. Just based on memory and improvisation. ;)

It means that I don't do the usual "two times a day" like normal human beings do.
Perhaps because I'm of a superior kind. I don't need sneeze. Sneezing is time consuming. So I choose not to sneeze.
A bit like evolution you know, survival of the fittest etc etc.
You're all in a phase I already passed.

Sneezing is for the lower forms.

-Paco (and a pinch of salt)

So you're saying that people like me (who have hay fever and therefore keep sneezing constantly from January through to October), for example, are on a lower step of evolution?  >:(

Quote from: bluepony on Sat, 2008-03-22, 16:51:18Well... how about things like... hmmm... sex, for example? It's also time-consuming and you don't need it!  ;)

Of course you need that!
I hope you're not completely stupid, lower form Bluey. Sex is what populates Earth.

But you're right, it depends...

Condoms and the likes for instance, are very much part of a lower form way of life. It holds back population. If we need to pass our DNA (survival of the fittest), a condom would be our worst enemy.

Sex is necessary and useful.
Sex with a condom however, is totally time-consuming and we definately don't need it.

Facts, my friends.

PH

Why did you edit your post?
You came to the conclusion that it was pointless?
Well, anyway, you're too late, the stupidity of that post is captured in a quote. ;) ;D

Ahem.... well yes.... Interesting topic, but doesn't have much to do with "sternutation"...

-Paco

I wanted to edit it, but deleted the original post instead... d'oh!
As if I cared about pointlessness...  ;)

I was talking scientific FACTS here.
Of course, since I don't believe in evolution as the normal evolution-believers do, I see the beauty of it all.
A flower's only a sexual organ?
Nah!
Love is only an ancient instinct for reproduction?
Nah!

Mind you... I wasn't talking about 'love'...!  ;)

But you'd better go back to your subject, Paco, because this is way off topic and I'm afraid you'll never find out more about sneezing if you concentrate on sex instead!  ;D

cabo

Well if you can understand norwegian: http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nysing

Sneeze=nyse in Norwegian

a quick translation... sneezing happends when the vocal chords close shortly and air pressure quickly builds in your lungs. When the vocal chords opens again this air pressure "explodes" through your nose. Them moment you sneeze all bodily functions stops, even your heart... it is not possible to sneeze with your eyes open!

Sorry, but that's not true. Not only can you sneeze with them open, your eyes won't pop out, like the story goes.
