Just found out that i actually never mentioned what my favourites are, so...second chance:

In no particular order:

Dream Theater

*[a long list...]*

Symphony X

Bla, bla...etc

Obviously my list has to be updated with:

Sylvan.

This is a great band who recently made, as you probably all would know, a marvelous album called Posthumous Sillence.  ;D

Edit: And i discovered just yet that i forgot to mention Lacuna Coil.  8)

But as far as I can see, a lot of good stuff on there! ;D
Also a bunch of stuff I don't listen to like Coldplay, Steve Thorne, Tool, Meshuggah, etc etc.
Maybe you can tell some about them (but probably not here, I read somewhere that it's actually strictly forbidden to reply on a listening profile ;D)

Have you already tried Kansas ? Because I know several Kansas fans who have recommended Salem Hill to me. And I read somewhere that Cryptic Vision has some similarities with Kansas too.

Yes i know Kansas. But Kansas doesn't know me.  :P

But seriously...the only track i like of them is the obvious, 'Dust In The Wind'. Not really my cup of tea actually. I discovered Salem Hill back in '98 when i bought the album 'The Robbery Of Murder' in Germany. Liked it from the beginning. Have to confess, i don't hear any similarities between either Salem Hill and Kansas or Cryptic Vision and Kansas.

OK, since I have never heard neither Salem Hill or Cryptic Vision, I do believe you. But I think, for instance, that some Dream Theater albums, like I&W or SDOIT, have many similarities with Kansas (blend of heavy and symphonic rock, changes of rythms, bombastic melodies). By the way, Dust in the Wind is not representative at all of Kansas' music. I find it to be a very average ballad, far below of what they have done before and since. If you have the opportunity to give a try to the Leftoverture album, maybe you'll change your mind. If this one doesn't grab you, it will mean that Kansas is really not your cup of tea ...

Some prisoner ( ::)  ;D) introduced me to a German band called Tomorrow's Eve. Ordered the album Mirror Of Creation II and i was stunned. A great mixture of Dream Theater, which i like a bit ( ;D) and Symphony X.
Have to order Mirror Of Creation I also.

Added to my list.  8)

Nice list - Regardin´ Kansas - spend some time an check out the Kansas until the end of ´70 - You could start with the live CD "two for the show" - its really great to hear what these guy´s performed - I like it - Symphony X have also some influences from Kansas  ;)

Please check out Ark - Burn the sun !!! Its really strange that this band is unknown to so many progressive fans because this record simply kicks ass in every way. Songs, performance, production. Everyone who checked that sound - loved it  *horns*

I think that some Kansas songs are really prog metal (and amongst the best of it) : try Child of Innocence or Lightning's Hand, for instance.

Two bands who i'd like to add:

Magic Pie
Knight Area

Especially Knight Area is a bit strange. When ...The Sun Also Rises was released i liked it but not worshipped it. But since a month i really got addicted with it so it was only natural that i would buy the new album as well.  8)

Okay, Nicky and PH.

You ask for it.  ;)

Meshuggah is a bit rough. I think it's a bit too rough for PH and probably for you too.

It's a bit like Tool but more Thrashy.
The reason why i placed it in my profile is because Catch 22.
I think it's a marvellous album. The vocals are a bit like Max Cavellera of Soulfly/ex-Sepultura with a touch of James Hetfield (Softica ehm Mainstreamica ehm Metallica).  ;D

I also have Chaosphere and Destroy-Erase-Improve but these albums are a lot more Thrashy then Catch 22. And less attractive to me to be honest.  :-\

Okay aside the comfort of a good beer i tend to buy something exclusive every now and then.

This is the time for that:

Equilibrio.

Read my tiny review on the NP topic and you'll now why.

Edit: let's modify this bit:

Here we go:

Quote from: what i wrote in the NP topicNP> Equilibrio - A Rock Opera

Tonight i went to the concert in Utrecht and my gosh let me tell you: if you like Symphonic metal with classical moments ehm let me refrase that: Lots of classical moments that this is an album you should really buy or at least check it out.

Stunning! And that for a Dutch band called Xystus combined with a Dutch Orchestra. Yep, a real orchestra.

It reminds me of Caamora in many ways though it's far more 'metal' than Caamora.

Highly recommended!!!  *horns* *horns* *horns*

I've updated my list a bit.
Made it more extensive. ;)

In the risk of copycatting Nick with his rather distinguished and extensive list especially with the addition of favorite guitarist, bassplayer etc etc, I've had to come up with a different title and obviously, a different approach.  :P ;D

I did another check in your listening profile (I check LP's every once in a while in search of new ideas and discoveries) and saw this:

Never heard you about him. What do you think of it? (And also the fellow I mentioned in my previous post. ;))

I have "The Gods Awaken" and "Return To Witchwood" which I find very nice. I don't play them often, but there are some great musical ideas. Especially "Return To Witchwood" is quite relaxing.

Hey Maddox, I checked out your listening profile and found this:

How did that end up there?

That's your fault. ;)

That's also your fault. ;) ;)

Mad, I get the impression that you like Dream Theater, donno why  ;)

That's not your fault. ;););)

They're okay.
A bit overrated.  :P

QuoteI see that you too like Adagio, pantheon with me. Their latest studio album Archangels in Black is magnificent  *horns*

I've got that album as well, but haven't updated my list, which is obvious for everyone to see.  :-[
Time is not always at my side. ...
I'm beginning to think that this was somewhat a pretentious endeavor.  :-[ :-[

QuoteI just ordered the entire Dominici O3 Trilogy (3 albums). I deemed them pantheon on the basis of what I heard on YouTube. Lookin forward to hearing the albums from beginning to end, as that always gives a deeper experience. I'm fascinated by the the storyline   8)

Nicky.

The first part of O3 is an acoustic, laid-back album.
It's not bad, a nice listen from time to time but don't expect something like DT. ;)

I know. It's quite special in a positive way  ;)

Parts 2 & 3 are fabulous melodic progmetal with thinking-man lyrics ala DT & CM  *horns*

Nicky.

Almost nothing. ;)

I have a great deal by them though the fun stopped a bit during the Black Album period and fell downhill after the horrific Load/Reload era.
I'm one of the few that liked the St. Anger album and was filled with joy (partly because of reminiscing the 'ol days) with the Death Magnetic album.
The thing however that always holds me back when it comes to Metallica, is James Hetfield.
I don't like his heehaw-yiddleydidley-buckaroo singing.
To be more precise: I hate it.  :-\

But...

Last year I embarked on a great journey into fulfilling the cd's-I-own-profile and the maintenance after I finally finished it but what was meant to be a glimpse into my cd-collection, became a task that turned out to be almost like a hellish torment.

No time, no time and, obviously, no time.

Silly excuse, I know since I usually make time for music but unfortunately it is the truth.

So, I reached a point where I will contemplate if I shall discover the answer to the question; Will there come a day where I continue with the work or just delete the list I've already made and just fill in the bands I like? Without the albums I have from them?

So for the time being: this thread is, yet and still under construction. ;)

My excuses if you are disappointed with that.
