Peter, Peter... Would you endorse such a wedge driven in between the members of this forum??? ;D

Anyway, I voted for Marillion based on all their albums, or the band's general impression on me and their position in this house.

Threshold are my favourites but not too far behind are Arena and Pendragon.

By the looks of the poll, I ought to be checking out Ayreon as well.

Ooooh, I'm so sorry, but Arena didn't got a vote from me :-[ (Don't bannish me Peter! [With sticks and torches in hand, the angry villagers drive Ayreon out of their demesne])

I voted for Ayreon, Dream Theater and Threshold. Arena would have come on the 4th place. I voted for these bands because I love all their albums as with Arena 'Pride' is an album I rarely play. Ayreon will always have a special place, because Into the Electric Castle introduced me to Prog. Still it was a very hard choice, but I had to be honest to myself. Arena will always be a one of the best bands in my personal little world history...

If only there where more votes possible... :'(

Okay, here we go...

Choice number one is obvious: Dream Theater. I haven't seen them for over 6 times for no reason.
Choice number two is a bit more difficult: If i would vote for anything different than ARENA, you all would exspel me from this forum. (You might do that anyway since i voted for Dream Theater as number one  :D).
So, yes, after a period of thinking i choose ARENA as number two.
But then choice number three: I should choose for Ayreon, 'cos i'm a really big fan of their/his music, but in the end i think i would have to choose for Spocks Beard. Even though he left the band a while back, i still consider Neal Morse as the best songwriter in Prog. music. Just like Mike Portnoy once said in an interview ( i think it was in AARDSCHOK, a dutch metal-magazine), "it doesn't matter if he writes about peanutbutter or God, its all fantastic". Well, i've got nothing more to add, then.

I miss a few bands, though. Why not The Flower Kings? Or Symphony X? Echolyn would be nice as well. You can always put them under "other", but they are worth to mention. Just like Galleon. But, the danger of a too long list, would be the amount of time of hesitating, though.  :-\

Difficult question, since this largely depends on my mood....
I said Arena, Ayreon and IQ, but Pendragon, Camel and Kayak are close as well....

Marillion and Fish are difficult, because I really, really love them, but I don't like the last 2-3 albums they did.... so this is my 'current' list, based on the most recent albums of the bands... that's why Spock's Beard missed the poll as well...

Also Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson are missing. Let alone my non-prog favourites: Queen and The Beatles!

Then You can split Arena in 3, one with John Carson, one with Paul Wrightson and one with Rob Sowden, that will make it too compicated, the Marillion fans can go to the other site where they can choose between H and Fish as a singer of the band

Marillion was in the list unsplitted, only 2 bandmembers have changed through the years, Fish and Mick Pointer, yes the music is different, but the H era also has changed, just look at Seasons end and the album Marbles. When I hear Clutching at Straws, then I can hear development in the music towards Seasons End as well, if You think away the voice.

No, actually not. The Marillion split is not simply about "Who's the singer now", but more like "This is another band now". Arena's style hasn't changed that much in the change of singers, if you ask me. But hey, that's just my 2c, I didn't want to make your poll bad or anything...
Title: Re: Best band
Post by: Deenfan on Fri, 2005-08-26, 00:13:15
Peter, behave now! :D

Marillion's first has just as little to do with "Clutching at straws" as "Misplaced childhood" has to do with "Holidays in eden". Or as much. The change between "Clutching..." and "Seasons end" is not bigger than any other leap the band made. Not very much. The fact that the band sounds extremely different today is another matter, and they would do so if Fish and the band never split. There would be little evidence of "Fugazi" in Fish's Marillion anno 2005.

But I see your point, of course. I would have issues with listing Crimson Glory as one of my favourite bands. I adored the two first albums. Best music I'd been treated to in my life back then. The third I absolutely hate (still same singer) and the fourth gave me nothing (new singer). It's a bit the same with Queensrÿche. One of my favourites, but man they suck these days, and have for the last three albums. So, yes, I think I know how you feel.

But for the purpose of the poll...

1.Fish's Marillion, two first albums
2.Fish's Marillion, two last albums
3.H's Marillion, Season's end only
4.H's Marillion, Seasons... - Afraid of sunlight
5. As 4., but strike "Holidays in Eden"
6. As 5, but add "This strange engine"
7. As 6., but do not strike "Holidays in Eden"
8.H's Marillion
9.Fish's Marillion
10.H's Marillion, but not "Radiation"
11.Fish's Marillion, AND "Radiation"
12. ...and so bloody on...

Arena had a style on the first two albums that has little to do with anything they've released since. -If you're being picky about details and blowing them up a bit. Visitor, Immortal, and Contagion... Well, maybe they're around the same feeling or style. But "Pepper's Ghost"? -That's a third direction. I must hasten to add: That's how I've felt about it. If you hear the music in a different way than me, this won't make sense, of course.

Just throwing in my last few cents... ;D

I agree to a certain point. I find the first and second album not a like, so to me there are 4 "styles" :P Still, they all sound like very Arena! It's the keys and lyrics that make it "Arena" to me. So, good job Clive :)

I'm getting tired of this question, just go to the other poll about Marillion with H and Marillion without H. If Fish was still in the band we would have a Marbles album with Fish as singer, Ocean Cloud with Fish instead of Steve Hogarth, maybe Fish will cover it some day for You and then make a decision which is the best.

Not so strange 22 years ago there was another Marillion nowadays, ok if You look at Status Quo, Bon Jovi there first album is almost the same as their last one, they just don't use new ideas, as Marillion does. But if I look at Dreamtheater and listen to Train of thought and listen to Octavarium it's like listening to two different bands more extreme than marillion over 24 years! They only needed 2 years to make that different! Or take the difference with the Moody Blues just before 1966 and just after 1966, what a difference!

I voted
QUEEN (obviously  ;)
ARENA
& SHADOW GALLERY
By Queen I also meant Brian May's solos and other projects they have done, so for me this is the unquestionnable winner. Such tallented, innovative, influential and musiaclly varied (!) bands are hard to be found even today. And -what's important they stayed the same in terms of the group members (!) for more than 15 years. Can you find me any other band like this?
Queen, for me personnally, is the only band (or one of a few) who, in spite of some musical stumbles like "Hot Space" albums were NEVER! boring. You could have bought their worst album but the songs, despite their crappy quality sometimes, were not dull or using the same worn out ideas  - they always came up with new, surprising themes, melodies, musical gadgets so that even if their production could be sometimes (yes!) kitchy, commercial or nor really rockn'd roll they never bored me, even for once - but that's my opinion. And... they were excellent performers... the band who could gather up to 150 thousand people in one place and rule the crowd like Freddie did. I know there are people who hate Queen but I always look at them as a collection of different things so I do not care about the stumbles and other stuff, who's perfect after all?, but I believe they are one of those groups - and there are not too many - who really have it ALL.

Yeah, ok but none of U2 members died... since then , luckily for them  ;D and their fans. I do not especially like U2 though, cos their style from the musical side seems a bit dull for me (sorry fans) or maybe I am musically deaf, who knows?  ;D
I just sometimes wonder what made U2 so famous?
I sometimes wonder what would happen If Freddie was alive? I just can not imagine what kind of music they would play now - some think that the band stopped existing just in the right time after Innuendo - one of their best albums, I think it would be hard to produce anything better than that.... (even for them) So many older bands struggle to come back on scene with a new material but sometimes with no good result, that's sometimes sad... I would not like this to happen to Queen (If they existed) so maybe that's good they are remembered like that :) Emilia

I think Innuendo and The Miracle were two of Queens strongest albums (and that's saying something  ;) ). Interesting too because The Miracle was the first album where they wrote as a group instead of individually and I think they certainly benefited from that approach  ;D

It's Progressive Metal (according to progarchives.com) They often work with a harpsicord and the vocals are sung by a female vocalist, who sings very operatic (is that a word?)

Progressive Metal
- harpsicord
- female vocalist
- opera-like vocals

Vanderwoude, am I right, or am I right?

I haven't heard to much about them, but what I've heard I liked it.

I've heard of the name Nightwish before but I have never heard any of their music.  How would you characterize their music besides being progressive?

You mean, besides being not really progressive? Erm, Gothic Metal would fit, methinks.

I think they're rather progressive.
Maybe not all of the albums, but hey, not all of Genesis' albums are progressive either.

I think Tuomas Holopainen ought to do a bit more in the way of proper keyboard work... he seems to prefer to use samples of solos on tour, which is a shame... seeing as he writes it all... :-\

Nonetheless, I do like Nightwish myself. :)

I think Innuendo and The Miracle were two of Queens strongest albums (and that's saying something ;) ). Interesting too because The Miracle was the first album where they wrote as a group instead of individually and I think they certainly benefited from that approach ;D
The same with Innuendo:), though some of the songs can be traceable to individuals (like I guess "Show must go on" was written by Brian May, "Ride the Wild Wind" by Roger, "Delilah" by Freddie and so on... but I am not 100% sure) Actually, both Innuendo and Miracle are my absolutely favourite Queen albums :) though I also like older stuff especially "Queen II" and "Night at the Opera".

I erased all the bands who were still going zero (except Fish), people who liked the erased bands please tell me which band it was I will add it so afterwards You can vote on it, I just wanted to make the list more easier to overview. So there's nothing in the list (except for Fish I wanted to give him a second chance to get votes) that is unvoted.

Voted.... but a little sad for me - just 4 (including mine) for Porcupine Tree  :-\
And what I have to say - I didn´t vote for Arena  ::) *hiding* ... they are a great band, but my favours are  PT Ayreon and Pink Floyd... I could name more, but the vote is just for three ;) if there were more possibilities, Arena would be in it....

Could only vote for 1 and half bands from that list!
Arena obviously and Marillion, but only with Fish - can't stand Hogarth!!

Most of my music tends to be a bit heavier so I would have voted for the likes of Savatage, CircleIICircle, Desolation, DarkTranquility, Insomnium, Swallow The Sun, Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Sentenced etc, etc, etc........

They did indeed my man and also    'I'm a cider drinker'   the song that is

it goes:-

I am a cider drinker, I drinks it all of the day
I am a cider drinker, it takes all my troubles away........etc, etc

All part of a movement known as scrumpy and western.

Of course the best known song was indeed combine harvester, and it went:

COMBINE HARVESTER (BRAND NEW KEY)
12/06/1976 - 2 weeks at #1 - 13 weeks on chart

I drove my tractor through your haystack last night
(ooh aah ooh aah)
I threw me pitchfork at your dog to keep quiet
(ooh aah ooh aah)
Now something's telling me
That you'm avoiding me
Come on now darling you've got something I need

Cuz I got a brand new combine harvester
An' I'll give you the key
Come on now let's get together
In perfect harmony
I got twenty acres
An' you got forty-three
Now I got a brand new combine harvester
An' I'll give you the key

She made I laugh ha ha

I'll stick by you, I'll give you all that you need
We'll 'ave twins and triplets
I'm a man built for speed
And you know I'll love you darlin'
So give me your hand
But what I want the most
Is all they acres of land

Cuz I got a brand new combine harvester
An' I'll give you the key
Come on now let's get together
In perfect harmony
I got twenty acres
An' you got forty-three
Now I got a brand new combine harvester
An' I'll give you the key

Ooaah she's a lovely bit of stuff an' all

For seven long years I've been alone in this place
Eat, sleep, in the kitchen, it's a proper disgrace
Now if I cleaned it up would you change your mind
I'll give up drinking scrumpy and that lager and lime

Cuz I got a brand new combine harvester
An' I'll give you the key
Come on now let's get together
In perfect harmony
I got twenty acres
An' you got forty-three
Now I got a brand new combine harvester
An' I'll give you the key

Who loves ya baby ha

Weren't we a grand couple at that last wurzel dance
I wore brand new gaters and me cordouroy pants
In your new Sunday dress with your perfume smelling grand
We had our photos took and us holding hands

Now I got a brand new combine harvester
An' I'll give you the key
Now that we'me both past our fifties I think that you and me
Should stop this galavanting and will you marry me
Coz I got a brand new combine harvester
An' I'll give you the key

Aahh yu're a fine looking woman and I can't wait to get me 'ands on your land

Such utterly inspirational lyrics ;D :D ;D

The top 7 results for so far

1  Arena              42 points
2  Marillion           15 points
3  DreamTheater   13 points
4  Ayreon             11 points
5  IQ                   10 points
6  Genesis             9 points
7  Threshold          8 points

And still no votes for Fish!, the rest is better I suppose. Arena is on the lead with overpower but that won't surprise anyone on the Arenasite! According to the voting IQ must be a good band also, hard to find their music but that doesn't stop them getting a lot of votes, infact only Marillion and Genesis are on the radio so that would give them a high score.

Indeed my friend! They're a lot different: Threshold is ProgMetal and Arena is NeoProg.
I like both!

I recently listened to Subsurface and Replica, that's REALLY great stuff, I want those CD's as soon as possible!

Threshold was also one of my 3 choices. I like the energy that's in the music but not too much, and always great lyrics, there's always a story in it with a message. I don't know the Album Replica yet is that a new one? The albums I have are Subsurface, Critical Mass, Hypothetical, Concert in Paris and Wounded Land.

After some years now the results become:

1 Arena                 48 points
2 Marillion                     16 points
3 Dream Theater          15 points
4 IQ                              13 points
5 Ayreon                       12 points
6 Genesis                      11 points
7 Threshold                     9 points
8 Pendragon & Pink floyd   7 points
10 Porcupine Tree         6 points

Well the message is clear Arena is the winner, they are the best!!!!!!!
IQ & pink floyd have been climbing since the last edit, and for some bands some extra points
And fish is still not willing to bite...
