I've read a review of the Clive Nolan album 'Alchemy' in the German magazine 'Eclipsed' (7 out of 10). They write that Clive is a busy man, but that his bands do not have to suffer from his 'musical trips'. 'Pendragon has planned a studio album and tour for 2014. Arena, with two live releases in 2013 (cd+DVD), are planning a studio album for 2014.' Anyone who has heard/read about it?

It was confirmed in the Clive Nolan newsletter I received today:
"New Album
The band is about to sit down to work on the new album, which hopefully will be ready by the end of 2014! No details are being revealed yet, so watch the Arena website carefully!"

Copied from Clive Nolan Newsletter 20/05/2014:
Arena has started work on their next studio album, which most will be released in February 2015. A decision has been made about the title and it will be revealed soon... The new release will be followed by a tour scheduled for the beginning of 2015, to coincide with the album release.

Clive: "Next year marks the 20th anniversary of Arena, and we are planning a substantial tour to celebrate this event. To coincide with this tour we are releasing a new studio album. This album is being written over the next few months and will be recorded later this year. It will be a concept album loosely based on an M.R. James horror story, with plenty of strong themes and dark drama... Pure, classic Arena!"

The official website of Arena is currently being updated - you may expect an exciting virtual experience very soon!

Don't know this writer. Anyone else?
Pure classic Arena? What could that mean?
Anyway, this somehow makes me think of "Pepper's Ghost" or something.

Excited! :) 2015 is a long way to go yet though... :(

A long time indeed. That's enough time for Arena to work their magic though, don't you think?  8)

And 'pure classic Arena' says 'The Visitor' and 'Contagion' stylings to me.  :)

And it'll be an even numbered concept album this time...

Clive mentioned that he and Mick have begun the writing about a week ago and have 6 'bits' of music so far, rule of thumb is that when they have 40 of these bits there's enough to build a new Arena album around. Title of the album and more news to be revealed soon.

With the risk of sounding like a bitter fan, but I hope they bring the keyboard/guitar solos back. I mean, don't get me wrong, "The Seventh Degree..." is a very good album and Paul is probably the best vocalist any band could have (!!), but there was almost no room for instrumental bits. I'm not asking for specific instrumental songs, but a few more instrumental passages within songs would be awesome! ;D

Having that said, I should add that a new Arena album is always a BIG happening and always very welcome. A bad Arena album has yet to be written and I don't think THAT will ever happen considering the talents of Clive and Co.

Than who should/would/could be the new bassplayer?

Should we open up a poll for this?  ;)

Seems difficult to find. Quoting Clive Nolan: "Next year marks the 20th anniversary of Arena, and we are planning a substantial tour to celebrate this event." So it has to be someone with lots of spare time in 2015. But it is also possible that the bass player on tour isn't the one playing the bass on the new album. Don't hope that though. I assume it won't take long that another announcemant is made ;).

He's the bassist for Clive's Alchemy, so he has been tried and tested ;)

From the Alchemy website:
QuoteKylan Amos has been a professional bassist for over twenty years now. Over that time he has played with numerous acts and artists like Strangeworld, Black Belt Jones, The Lizard Kings as well as various different tribute acts and stage shows. He has performed around the UK and Europe and featured on a number of albums over the years. Kylan has joined Caamora Company in 2011 and debuted in an eight-man concert version of 'She' in Holland in September that year. In 2012 he was the principal bassist for the Cheltenham 'She' shows and continues to be so in 'Alchemy'.

This is what Clive Nolan (touring with Pendragon) wrote on Facebook. Might interest you ;):

Have sat in the tour bus lounge now for maybe 4 nights - from about 3.30am to 5.30am - writing lyrics for the arena album. The combination of a nasty cold, inability to sleep and a moving bus have turned out some pretty dark stuff - business as usual I guess! ;)
'The Unquiet Sky' is proving to be very ...... Unquiet!

There's an interview with Clive posted on www.clivenolan.net. It's all about The Unquiet Sky!

QuoteA few months ago the title of the new album was announced. What is the genesis of "The Unquiet Sky"?
Clive: It was a combination of ideas - I had decided to base the album on a short horror story by M.R. James called 'Casting the Runes' - some people may have seen the old 1957 film version called 'Night of the Demon'. We were looking for an album title and John suggested 'The Unquiet Sky' even though he was unaware of my concept idea - as far as I was concerned, it fitted the mood I had in mind for the album - job done! :)

Is the 8th studio album a concept and what is the story behind it?
Clive: It is indeed a concept - as I said above. I must admit that part of the influence is also the old film version - a great atmosphere. It's the film that inspired me to write the opening orchestral section.

How is the work on the album going and have you got a lot of material so far?
Clive: Work is going well... the album is essentially written, and recently we completed the drum recording. The keyboards are pretty much finalised as well. Time to work on the guitars!

The band has parted ways with John Jowitt. Why such a decision and how was Kylan Amos chosen?
Clive: As you know the plan for this year is to do quite a big Arena tour - that combined with the rehearsal and recording commitments meant that John Jowitt would struggle to find the time. I have worked with Kylan before with the musicals and he is a great bassist. It seemed like the obvious choice. We have already rehearsed and performed with him and there's some good chemistry.

With the altered line-up, how does the writing process go? Is every member of the band contributing to the new material?
Clive: This is the first album where everyone has offered up some ideas - that was an interesting process. I guess the real challenge was making sense of all the bits, and making a cohesive collection of songs... particularly since this is a concept album.

Will the new album be maintained in the 'old Arena vein'? Or have you changed the style, mood and sound?
Clive: I guess it is part of the constant evolution of the band, but because this is our 20th anniversary I think there may be some extra classic Arena references.

2015 will be the year of anniversaries - you have announced The Fire and the Questcelebrating 10 years of your musicals, but Arena's 20th anniversary is a big date! How do you plan to celebrate it?
Clive: Basically with a new album and a big tour! :)

Can we expect any special guests during the anniversary tour? Past members of the band maybe?
Clive: There are no plans for any special guests, but I think the tour will be well worth checking out. There will be themes from the new album as well as some nice retrospective moments from our last 20 years.

You are known for your Steampunk image in 'Alchemy' and most recently in Pendragon too. Are you planning a costume for the next Arena tour? And what will it be?
Clive: I guess I will need something - but I really don't know what as yet - watch this space. ;)

How do you see the future of Arena after "The Unquiet Sky"?
Clive: It's impossible to say what will come next, but my advice is come and see us on tour... this will be a special one!

Nice interview. I'm looking forward to hear this album! *horns**horns**horns* The only downside for me is that I won't make it to see them live this tour. The first tour I'm going to miss since the Immortal?-tour back in 2000. :-\

Arena 'The Unquiet Sky": New Album and Tour
In just a few days Arena is setting off for their 20th anniversary European tour. The band will celebrate their 20th birthday by launching and promoting their new album, "The Unquiet Sky". The date of the official release has been confirmed for April 28th. However, the CDs, alongside numerous interesting anniversary merchandise, will be available for purchase at the venues from the first day of the tour.

Arena is currently rehearsing the songs chosen for the tour. The set list will feature compositions representing the whole history of the band.

Clive: "We have been rehearsing down in Devon, in the middle of nowhere. That certainly helps us to focus! This is a big set list and there has been a great deal to work through. It was great to finally be able to play through the whole of 'Moviedrome'... that was quite a challenge. Meantime, it's been fun to revisit some of the old favourites. There is a sense of studious determination in the band as we all realise just how much we need to do in the next few days. I hope we see plenty of people at the shows... this will be an Arena highlight, and I doubt we will do a tour like this again."

Well what can I say. Arena were brilliant. I saw them in London and Leamington Spa. I think that makes about 12 times I have seen them now. The set list was perfect although they played nothing from Songs From The Lions Cage and only 1 from Pride. Moviedrome more than made up for it though. All the band were fab. I like Kylan. JM was note perfect as always despite having a broken finger and Paul is proving an excellent front man even though he forgot the words for the 1st verse of The Butterfly man in London. Clive and Mick were great too. They played 3 off of the new album. I had a brilliant time.

Wow, they played Moviedrome? That seems like a hard one to play. Did they get it right?
Too bad about Songs From The Lions Cage. I always liked Valley Of The Kings a lot. With that keyboard solo. And of course Solomon. But I guess one epic was enough. ;D

And the new songs? Can't wait to hear the new album! Should be here soon now.

Oh yeah, I forgot. In London they played The Show Must Go On (Queen) but they didn't do it in Leamington so I'm not sure if it was just a one off. You guys in Europe, let us know and everyone enjoy it. It was well worth the wait. *horns*

Saw Arena @ Hedon, Zwolle yesterday, great show!! Unquiet Sky couldn't be more apt, it's been unquiet and stormy ever since Arena brought their new album across the pond to the continent!! ::)
But we managed to reach the venue and were in for a treat. Great to see them live again after too long a time!! Moviedrome was a particular highlight, executed to perfection and Hanging Tree as well. I missed Songs and Pride in the anniversary set (Cry VII doesn't really count) but there was a healthy dose of Visitor tracks (5 no less), Unquiet Sky (4), Immortal (2+++), Contagion (3) and then some  Seventh Degree (2) and Pepper's Ghost (1; Smoke and Mirrors has been dropped for Traveller Beware).

1. The Demon Strikes
2. Rapture
3. Double Vision
4. A Crack in the Ice
5. Moviedrome
6. How Did it Come to This?
7. The Butterfly Man
8. Salamander
9. Bedlam Fayre
10. Serenity
11. The Unquiet Sky
12. Traveller Beware
13. The City of Lanterns
14. Riding the Tide
15. The Hanging Tree
16. The Tinder Box
Encore:
17. Don't Forget To Breathe
18. Crying for Help VII

Demon Strikes is gelling well and the other new songs sound pretty good too on first hearing, subject to further scrutiny now that I have the album ;) Kylan proved to be a great asset for the band and was very lively on stage.

Had ample time to study the booklet in the train back but haven't deciphered the runes nor those number sequences bottom credits page yet... I did spot the subtle visitor velocipede in the background on the Unexpected Dawn page, nice one!

Looking forward to the Boerderij gig and hope they will play The Show Must Go On there!!

Edit: how could I forget Clive's 'anniversary anecdotes', he told about how Arena started with him and Mick meeting in a pub, Mick said he wanted to make music but most definitely did not want to start a band.. After introducing the band Clive also mentioned that line up changes is what they probably do best, even slightly above making music :P

Well, what can I add to what Erik wrote? It was a great show indeed. The sound at this venue (Hedon, Zwolle) is crystal clear. Noticed it at an earlier gig (Kayak) too. All the separate instruments could be heard clearly and Paul's voice as well.

Room enough for John Mitchell to shine yesterday and really like Paul's voice. Great performer and it seems all very easy for him.

Personal highlights for me were 'Moviedrome', 'The Butterfly' (the track that introduced me to Arena) and the title track from the new album. Great Mitchell solo! Also a special mention for 'Serenity' (Nolan/Mitchell) 8).

If your Arena gig is in the near future: have fun and prepare for goosebumps *horns* ;).

Same setlist yesterday in Essen as Erik posted, but at the beginning of the encores, they played a very very good version of Queen's "Show must go on". Excellent.

All in all: great gig, very very powerful.
Paul is a great singer, maybe the best vin the line of singers at Arena. A bit too much trill in his voice, but expressive, powereful both at the darker and lighter passages. Nearly perfect.
Clive had much fun with his "360° Keyboard", John was perfect as always - the whining guitar is probably the best in Progmusic. Kyle was solid, together with Mick the rythm section was adrift and powerful.
Sound was OK for the venue.

The setlist was quite good, I liked all of the songs but I must say, I was disappointed, that they left out on the "20 anniversary tour" the first two albums (except the unfortunate crying for help) completely. For me, e.g. Solomon is a must have... But this was the only dissapointment of the evening.
Song of the evening was definetely "The hanging tree".
Traveled nearly 100km to see the guys again and it was all worth it.

Thank you, Arena. Cheers to the next 20 years of the music of my life.

Clive Nolan wrote on his Facebook page that 'Solomon' is back on the setlist, from yesterday. Now all albums are represented. Too late for us though :).

Speaking of Facebook, Arena seems to have a new Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Arena-official-FB/144462034576?fref=ts) .

But how can it possibly be bad news?

At last: news about the upcoming DVD release including cover artwork: here (http://www.metalmind.pl/en/arena---new-live-dvd-in-february-2016_-cover-artwork-revealed.html).

It is looking great and I'm sure it will sound great too *horns*.

The setlist is looking great! Moviedrome, Solomon, The Butterfly Man, and the rest. Really good!
The only downside for me is the artwork... I always think it's very unimaginative to use the front cover of the latest studio album. They also did that with their previous live dvd.
But, I'll probably get this one, regardless of the cover! ;)

Writing has begun. From Clive's Facebook page:

So - we finally begun writing a new Arena album - it always begins with that scary 'empty page' ;)

That is of course fantastic news! Let's hope that the line-up is still the same because the last album was very very good!
So, there's no album title yet. But I'd probably buy it even when it's called "New Album".

I guess this can be either a concept album or a conceptual album, since the concept/conceptual cycle that started with "The Visitor" was broken with "The Unquiet Sky" (being a concept album).

Anyway, I hope there will be lots of guitar and keyboard solos. ;D Or even long(er) instrumental sections like the middle part of Solomon.
But I trust Clive, Mick and John and the rest. They've never made a bad album.

Ah great! That's fantastic news! If it's half as good as "The Unquiet Sky" I will be very happy!
For some reason I have a feeling that they'll make another concept album, with a lot of Visitor influences. Wishful thinking perhaps? "The Unquiet Sky" was a lot like "Immortal?" to me. So let's hope they'll take it another step further (or back!) to their magnum opus.

This is the reason why I think (hope) the next album will be like The Visitor. I'm going to send in "De Flint" again as a possible venue. But probably (like last time) it won't make it.

That's nice! But I already have everything...

About the solo releases:
I'm not that interested in yet another Script tour to be honest. Perhaps Mick needs a new project because Arena and Script alone is not much... Perhaps he can team up with Paul Wrightson and John Jowitt and start another Arena side project. ;D Or is he still selling kitchens as well? What are Paul and John (and Ian) up to nowadays anyway?

I also need to get more into Clive's musicals. I still haven't watched the "She" dvd... I guess that's where I'll start.

John's new Lonely Robot album is auto-buy for me. "Please Come Home" didn't make it to my top ten list of 2015, but it really has grown on me since.

I enjoyed it A LOT! Yesterday was possibly the best gig experience I've had. The sound was perfect, I could see everything very well and the music was excellent of course!
The two new songs were great! Especially The Mirror Lies, which is stuck in my head now.

My dad also liked it. He said he was positively surprised and I saw him smiling a few times during the gig. Beforehand he always said that he doesn't like the Arena vocalists (too overly dramatic, he says). But yesterday he was praising Paul Manzi's performance. "What a voice" he said. Haha, very cool.
And I think he's starting to like Arena now, because I just caught him listening to "The Visitor".
I believe in miracles. Hehe.

My favourite was the whole Visitor set. There was several times that I had goosebumps.

I was pretty much in the middle of the room. Right after four young teenagers. Or so they seemed to be, to me. Man, I guess that means I'm starting to get old now...

"A little track we like to call The Visitor" (to quote Clive) was my favorite part of the set as well. Great to hear and see it performed in its entirety after 20 years. And now we finally know those barely audible spoken words Blood Red Room, because they were shown on the screen :) The new stuff went down well too, especially Mirror Lies. I also saved my drinks for after the show as not to miss anything :P

I was at the right side, together with marcelthecage, approx 2-3 metres from the stage, pretty much aligned with John M. Indeed, we should think of something to recognise the Roomies, print the logo top left on a T shirt or something :)

Absolutely! *horns* This may sound a bit pathetic, but as soon as they told us that they were gonna play a new song I felt a bit nervous. First they played Poisoned and that was good, but not groundbreaking. It reminded me of How Did It Come To This?, but I like HDICTT? a bit better. The Mirror Lies certainly didn't disappoint! Probably my favourite of the new album, along with The Legend Of Elijah Shade.

Off topic: I'd love to hear what you think were some great releases in 2016 and 2017, because we haven't seen you for so long, and I value your opinion on great musical releases. ;D

Thanks, nice to hear! Will see if I ever come round to do that. Life was already complicated with one kid running around (24 hours in a day does not even come close to being enough :o), and now there's even another one (although that one's not running around - yet ;D)!

The gig was fantastic. I missed the Unquiet Sky tour so had not seen Arena since 2011. So it was about time. As I already mentioned, we had a pizza beforehand and a nice little "Cage-reunion" and as good as it was, the best of the evening was still to come. I really enjoyed seeing The Visitor in it's entirety for the first time. What a masterpiece of an album it still is today. Afterwards I spoke to Paul Manzi and I mentioned to him that the best part for me was how he really made The Visitor his own. He thanked me and said that he put a lot of effort in portraying the various characters. And you could tell. He made subtle alterations to some of the vocal lines and especially 'Tears' he sung with so much passion and emotion. I can't wait to hear it again on the recording. Hope they will release it on blu-ray since I don't do dvd anymore. But I understand that it will probably be a cost-thing and that they'll only release it on dvd.

The rest of the set - especially The Mirror Lies - was also great, although I could do without Crying For Help VII. I'm so tired of hearing that. I would rather have them play another song from the catalog instead. No matter what song. Any song! ;D

Nice interview with Clive, in Dutch;

Some interesting remarks: more live dates coming up next year, with more Double Vision tracks in the set and the big track Elijah Shade might get a live rendition!
