Title: Progstreaming
Post by: Teunis on Mon, 2013-10-28, 20:26:06
I thought it would be a good idea to open a topic for Progstreaming. There are two websites: Progstreaming.com (http://www.progstreaming.com/_wb/index.php) and Progstreamingclassic.com (http://www.progstreamingclassic.com/).

A place to discuss, recommend and pay attention to new additions. I already found several great bands and bought albums after hearing their music, e.g. Wolverine, Airbag, DeeExpus, Nosound, Airbag, Comedy of Errors and Mystery.

Today new on Progstreaming.com: (just for one week!) the new Ayreon album 'The Theory Of Everything'. You can also hear albums from Big Big Train, Airbag, Nemo, Fromuz etc. Well, have a look.

On Progstreamingclassic.com now e.g. the new RPWL live album 'A Show Beyond Man And Time' and Pendragon's 'The Masquerade Overture'.

Good idea Teunis! :)

Guys, make sure you listen to the aforementioned bands! I can't tell you enough, listen to Big Big Train!
And Ayreon too!

Also, I see Ray Wilson with "Chasing Rainbows" on the list too. I'm sure people here will like it!

You're welcome. It's a nice way do discover new music. Sometimes after two minutes you've heard enough and sometimes you're pleasantly surprised :). Today I've played albums by The Gathering and Von Hertzen Brothers. Read raving reviews from the latter one and I have to say I like it a lot and it definitely will get another spin.
These two albums were new. Other additions on Progstreaming.com: Knight Area - Between Two Steps (EP which I already own), Zenit - The Chandrasekhar Limit and an album from The Green Violinist (never heard of).

I'm very satisfied with YouTube. I can find virtually everything there, and now they have many full albums. Often you get an interesting video along with the music. And it's all for free  *horns*

Only twice have I missed something: Explorers Club's Fate Speaks, and a song of Sparks, forget which. And I have both on cd.

Oh, but I do use YouTube a lot too, especially when I discover new bands, like on Progstreaming. I noticed that full albums are on YT, e.g. Nosound, Mystery. A nice way to see or even better: hear if it's worth to buy albums from their backcatalogue. And we have a YT app on our television. I've watched several full concerts that way  8) *horns*.

And an other prog stream website is progify.com: https://www.progify.com/releases/ (https://www.progify.com/releases/), also for free.

Nice. I think I will listen to the new Sky Architect and Chris albums. Both feature Christiaan Bruin, a young multi instrumentalist.
I was pleasantly surprised when I first heard Sky Architect's first album. But I didn't listen to them that much and after that I forgot about them.
Thanks for the reminder!

Leap Day is a Dutch neo prog band. The Inner Road is a symphonic instrumental prog rock band from the UK. I'm usually bored by (only) instrumental music. FUGHU is a progressive metal band originating from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Don't know the rest either :).

Many of these album are not "Progressive Rock", but merely experimental, kind of rock-ish, sometimes not even that. I stopped trying out records there, they don't have what I'm looking for, it seems. I really appreciate the effort they're making to push lesser known and even unknown artists and give them a platform. I Germany this would not be possible due to the Gema fees.

I somewhat agree. There's a lot of bad and boring stuff there (too much for my liking), but every now and then there are some that are worth checking out.

I occasionally listen to some of the records there. Especially the albums which a) I know by their name (due to reviews and hype); b) are recommended by one of you guys; c) have nice artwork.

For example: Subsignal I knew because of reviews I read in the past, some here like their music and they have cool cover art.
I also want to try out Leap Day, because (like the other Dutch band Silhouette) they seem to go from 'mediocre unknown' band to 'rising to fame'.

I'm now also listening to PFM in Classic "Da Mozart, A Celebration". Because I have listened to some of PFM's 70's albums and liked it. And I like that they take Mozart compositions and do some cool things with it. Sounds great actually! Pretty jazzy too.

I'll never be drawn to stuff like the potato chips brand cover art...

I can imagine. With a lot of albums you've heard enough after one (part of a) track. But sometimes you are surprised.

That's also my strategy. And without Progstreaming I probably wouldn't have discovered the bands I mentioned in my first post. And I've bought many of the albums after hearing them, so it really works. The new Subsignal is an other example of an album I consider buying 8).

Honestly, I think they are doing a great job. And I have been rarely totally disappointed by what I was listening too. And I am rather happy that they don't limit to traditional prog and push the boundaries a little.

By now, I think that I must have bought about ten albums that I discovered through their two sites (progstreaming and progstreamingclassic). So no reason to complain for me, quitte the contrary : my hat off to them  *horns*

Fatal Fusion - The Ancient Tale (Crossover Prog, Norway)
Huis - Despite Guardian Angels (Neo-Prog, Canada)

The latter one is a new project from Michel St-Pere (Mystery). Copied from Progarchives.com:
The music is a well crafted progressive rock with a symphonic touch and the use of Hammond, Moog and Mellotron takes us back to the old prog rock sound of the 70's. The guitar playing of St-Pere brings a big influence of the Neo-Prog band MYSTERY and many others Neo-Prog bands that put the melody and vocals upfront with strong compositions skills.

Currently listening to this album. If you like Mystery, I would give this album a listen. I like it!  :)

To be fair though I think at least 4 of them were actually in King Crimson at one stage or another.

This projeKct was sanctioned by Fripp himself and indeed includes several Crimson veterans (Belew, Levin, Mastelotto) combined with new talents. Saw them live Saturday and was absolutely blown away. Great, extensive set (2 hrs and 45 minutes) that alternated between the trios (Stick Men and Belew Power Trio) and the full 'double trio', making massive noise with tracks like Thrak and Red. Their version of Indiscipline was a particular highlight but the set was great throughout. Highly recommended.

Is that actually the third reissue in only ten years?
Do you like The Pineapple Thief? I had a hard time trying to like it. It didn't happen.
It's actually pretty funny, because in the process my younger brother (16 year old) picked it up and he now listens to The Pineapple Thief quite a lot.
He's more on the pop spectrum of prog like Blackfield, a few RPWL songs, and a few others that he heard of me.

Oh, he also loves "The Incident" album by Porcupine Tree. ;D

By the way, I'm now listening to Gazpacho's "Demon" on Progstreaming and my initial reaction is a very positive one!
Perhaps I'll get me a copy tomorrow.
I have to say that Gazpacho's songwriting since "Night" (which was very succesful) is getting a bit formulaic with not many new things explored. Yet this album seems a little bit different already. Anyway, Gazpacho is always high quality stuff no matter what.

They're indeed back on track as far I'm concerned. 'Missa Atropos' and 'March Of Ghosts' are okay albums, but certainly not at the same level as 'Night' and 'Tick Tock'. It took me several listenings, but now the new album is 'unfolding'. I didn't like the (longest) track 'Death Room' in the beginning, but now I do. It's a good sign. Most of the time masterpieces aren't 'love at first hearing' :).

I'd like to point out Major Parkinson which is an interesting release.
I especially like Beaks Of Benevola. The melody of that song gets stuck in your head quite easily and it has pretty nice female vocals. The rest of the album is alright too. It's really strange music with a Tom Waits vocal style. I wonder what you think of it.

Edison's Children is Pete Trewavas' 'solo' band. I haven't heard it yet, but the reviews I've read were pretty positive.

Thanks Teunis! Also great news that there is a classical streaming now.
The problem I have with such artists is that most of the time they are essentially cover bands, playing the work of the old masters.
Makes me wonder if they lack the skills to compose music themselves.

This album is a tribute to Mike Oldfield and especially to his Tubular Bells album. The instruments are the same and the movements more or less follow the same pattern.

Archiv - Axiom
Resistor - To The Stars

Not my favourite albums I've seen on Progstreaming this year though ;).

One of Resistor's previous albums is called Rise.
It somewhat reminds me of Porcupine Tree at certain moments, but with a bit more humor in the lyrics.
It's a raw and rocky sound but overall great to listen to.
Mimosa is one of those great songs, give it a try is my advice. ;)

And about Archive, I had some troubles with them as well but lately I do like their music.
Not really prog, but a variety of styles.

Porcupine Tree is one of those bands I gave a try, but it never clicked. Same as e.g. Spock's Beard and Yes. Not really my cup of tea. But I'll follow your advice, this site is meant for that ;).

I've listened to Roger Waters and a part of Joe Satriani already. Waters is classic, I often find the lyrics kind of weird ::). Satriani is a great musician and I've been enjoying the album for three or four tracks, but can't keep myself interested in a whole instrumental album.

Allstreaming is a nice way to discover new albums/music. Annoying though are the commercials after every three or four tracks, at least if you're using the free account like me ;).

Yes, I have one album by him "Black Swans And Wormhole Wizards", which is pretty cool. But after a while I get bored. Don't have that with EVERY instrumental album though. For example, I can listen to Roine Stolt's "Hydrophonia" and sometimes even replay the thing all over again.

I don't know Soilwork but Sabaton is not that extreme. Pretty standard heavy metal I guess. I was gonna listen to it because one of my colleagues recommended it to me. Haven't yet listened to the new one but one of the older ones. It's not bad. I might listen again.

Post by: maddox on Tue, 2016-08-30, 12:13:16
Soilwork is pretty rough, they have some progressive touches in their music but overall it's more deathmetal than progressive
The vocals however is probably not to everyone's liking.
Not always growls, there are some clean vocals every now and then.

James Labrie was very fond of this band, though he said that in a time when Mike Portnoy was still behind the DT-drumkit. ;)
So maybe he didn't had a choice.  :o ;D

Ah yes. I heard some good things about the new Marillion release.
Actually, I LOVED "Marbles", liked probably two or three songs of "Somewhere Else", really liked the first disc of "Happiness Is The Road" and "Sounds That Can't Be Made" didn't do that much for me (didn't listen to it that much either to be honest).
The new one should be more like "Marbles", or so they say.

I'd like to try Kansas and also Operation Mindcrime.

To me Queensrÿche ended the day GT left the band.
Haven't heard Operation:Mindcrime (the new band of Geoff Tate) but I doubt I ever will.
Have quite some issues with the man's ego. What he did prior his leaving and after that, wasn't really nice to say the least.
The fact that both teams, Geoff and his ex-band mates from, to me, the real Queensrÿche, released an album as such and that Geoff deliberately called his Queensrÿche album Frequency Unknown, with a fist on the cover that had the letter F and U (we all know what that means) on two rings with the bands icon in between, is a low point to any standards.

I have heard bits and pieces with the new line-up of the 'real' Queensrÿche but the new singer don't convince me yet.

To me Queensrÿche ended the day GT left the band.

I am a big Tate fan - what he did with the original Q - so I was also sceptical towards a Q without Tate, but when I read the enthusiastic reviews of their self-titled album (from 2013), I decided to give it a try, and WOW, was I caried away. Condition Hüman (2015) was just as WOW *horns*

I read the reviews of Tate's albums - FU under the Q moniker, and the two O:T albums - and they were not enthusiastic, and I had listened a few times to Tate's earlier album Geoff Tate (2002), which had not impressed me, so I decided to let this matter rest; I have enough music that excites me.

Mad, give the self-titled album and CH some runs. You'll see that the many fans who extol the new Q are right 8)

Funny, that nowadays people consider Meshuggah as Djent, while I always thought that it was Math-metal.
Each to his own label.  ;D

"Djent" obviously derives from Meshuggah. From Wikipedia:

Djent /ˈdʒɛnt/ is a style of heavy metal music that was developed as a spinoff of traditional progressive metal. The word "djent" is an onomatopoeia for the distinctive high-gain, distorted, palm-muted, low-pitch guitar sound most notably employed by bands like Meshuggah and SikTh. Typically, the word is used to refer to music that makes use of this sound, to the sound itself, or to the scene that revolves around it.

Development

Fredrik Thordendal, guitarist of Swedish band Meshuggah, is considered the originator of the djent technique, although Tomas Haake stated in an interview in Loudwire "Fact or Fiction" that they did not "coin" the term "djent", however, the scene itself developed from an online community of bedroom musicians, including Misha Mansoor, whose success with Periphery brought djent "from the virtual world into the real one." Other important pre-djent era bands in the development of the style are SikTh, Mnemic, Animals as Leaders, TesseracT, and Textures.

The scene has grown rapidly, and members of the original online community, including the bands Chimp Spanner, Gizmachi, and Monuments, have gone on to tour and release albums commercially. Other bands that are often considered djent include A Life Once Lost, Veil of Maya, Vildhjarta, and Xerath. Born of Osiris have also been described as being inspired by the djent movement. Furthermore, Hacktivist and DVSR are djent bands that use rapping as primary vocal style.

Misha Mansoor from Periphery uses many guitar effects to influence the music, such as creating a lot of high gain by using an overdrive pedal. "To get a djent tone on any guitar, you have to buy a compressor, overdrive or Tube Screamer, distortion, and shimmer reverb pedals to allow you to get a djenty tone depending on your amp and guitar in general."

Characteristics

Djent as a style is characterized by progressive, rhythmic, and technical complexity. It typically features heavily distorted, palm-muted guitar chords, syncopated riffs, and polyrhythms alongside virtuoso soloing. Another common feature is the use of extended range seven, eight, nine, and ten-string guitars.

- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djent

But yes, mathcore also applies to Meshuggah, as well as hard-edged metal - just like several labels - neoprog, symphonic hard rock, epic rock - apply to Arena ;)

And again: Periphery should not be missed - they are right upfront at the cutting edge!

The Danish group Mnemic too - a nice confluence of FF and Periphery, with Mnemic's own special sound - they have quickly become pantheon with me.

And I think that Bupie can join us in celebrating la belle :-*

Time to revive this thread!

The latest albums to listen to are:

Progstreaming (http://www.progstreaming.nl/):

- Jack O' The Clock - "Repetitions Of The Old City II"
I heard of this band quite a few times and I remember trying out some of their music, but nothing stuck. Apparently this is a sequel to their 2016 release. The violins, banjos, flutes and other interesting instruments are giving it a folk sound. It makes me think of Jethro Tull in places (because of the vocals). Of course I'm only quickly skipping through the songs for the purpose of this thread, but I can definitely see myself listening to this! It goes into my playlist in any case.

- Fuchs - "Station Songs"
Hans-Jürgen Fuchs is a German multi-instrumentalist and the husband of Ines Fuchs (Ines has her own Neo-Prog band). First song (The Invisible Man) has a Supper's Ready section in the middle. Kind of a rip off, but a real nice one at that. Nice keyboard sounds. It has a Neo-Prog vibe to it. Obviously their main reference is Genesis. I think it's somewhere between Barock Project or Big Big Train. Some very nice melodies and Tony Banks-y chords. Not bad at all!

- Armonite - "And The Stars Above"
A mostly instrumental band with some classical influences. Some of the nice bass parts are played by the immediately recognizable Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree). But apart from that, there's not really a PT influence. It's pretty bombastic and ambitious. And it might be a bit too much for someone who prefers vocals alongside the music. Try for yourself. I think it's pretty cool.

- Subsignal - "La Muerta"
Well, what can I say. I don't think this needs an introduction. Catchy stuff again! I already ordered the CD. When I was listening to this I liked it instantly, which was not the case with their previous album. But it WAS the case with "Paraíso". I think this album is a return to form. You just can't ignore this album.

- Lunatic Soul - "Under The Fragmented Sky"
Typically Lunatic Soul. What a strange way to start the album. The repetitive structure of many of these songs is very mesmerizing. I think I like this better than "Fractured". But to be honest, I haven't listened a lot to that one. This album is more like the first two albums.

- Homunculus Res - "Della Stessa Sostanza Dei Sogni"
If you're allergic to Italian Prog, the title of this album might make you nauseous. But this is not typical RPI. It's more reminiscent of the Canterbury scene. It does have Italian lyrics though. I think it's pretty charming music. If they told me this was written and recorded in the 70's, I would believe it immediately.

- Gazpacho - "Soyuz"
And then there's the new Gazpacho. Again, this needs no introduction. Everybody knows that you cannot judge an album of this band after less than five listens. So I won't. It does sound like Gazpacho again. Nothing really changed in ten years. I have this on CD and it's my intention to really enjoy it in the future. Not yet though.

That's enough for now, concerning Progstreaming. (There's also Feronia, AElementi, Marygold, Monnalisa, Arcaprogjet and a lot more!)

Because I also want to tell something about Progstreaming Extended (http://progstreaming.com/extended/) (for Spotify/Apple Music/Deezer users):

- Spock's Beard - "Noise Floor"
I was listening to this yesterday, and was surprised. The band said this album would be more straight forward. Fans and critics were either praising or loathing the new direction. But I don't hear it. It's again very decent Spock's prog. Opener To Breathe Another Day kicks in very convincingly. I think they keep this momentum for the rest of the album. I never really got into "The Oblivion Particle", which I found to be a bit of a mixed bag. This on the other hand, is probably the best Spock's Beard album with Ted Leonard. I was really surprised by So This Is Life, which sounds like ELO, complete with the vocoder, the string section, the harmony vocals and the "this is over" lyrics. Ted does his best Jeff Lynne impression. Love it.

- Arena - "Double Vision"
Yup, it's there. So if anyone still hasn't heard it: it's there. But seriously, you haven't heard it? It's awesome!!!

- TumbleTown - "Never Too Late"
Ok, so I guess it's never too late (haha... :-\) to discover a new band, right? A Dutch band that screams Neo-Prog. The keyboard player is Erik Laan (Silhouette) and he has some nice sounds in his toolbox. Other participants are members of Seven Day Hunt. I can't help it, but the vocals feel a bit misplaced. This album is not bad, but I don't think I'll push myself to listen more to this.

Another mention for a band on Progstreaming Access (http://progstreaming.com/access/) (and then I'll promise to stop)

- Colouratura - "Unfamiliar Skies"
If anyone is into Canterbury Scene, then you should check this out. This is very relaxing and takes me back more than a few years. There's a lot of jazz and psychedelic in the package as well. The singer reminds me of Richard Sinclair (Caravan). But it's mostly instrumental anyways. The mixing gives it a real Retro-prog sound which is nice if you're into that. Vesuvian Tidepools is a nice instrumental song! There's a lot to like! I wonder what you guys make of it.

Totally agree. 'The Beacons Of Somewhere Sometime' was not bad, but I liked 'Paraiso' much more. 'La Muerta' is more gripping and melodious. Great album 8).

Do agree again. Just played it for the second time and enjoyed it much more than the previous album. But IMO it can't 'stand in the shadow' (don't know if this is know in English ;)) of Riverside.

Same feeling (again). Played it several times, but it doesn't seem to click (yet). Milestones away from my favourite 'Tick Tock' :)
