There is definitely a Dream Theater and Rush influence, but it is not quite as heavy as DT and very melodic and accesible. Also a bit of an alternative rock vibe in their sound. I discovered them by way of their support slot in the Marillion couch convention which indicates they have a broader appeal.
DT and Rush are far from my favourite bands. The best way to get an impression is listening. I'll give them a listen this week ;).

Now listening to Prog Non Stop #521. Usually I listen to Dollhouse Rock Radio, but due to the curfew it was broadcasted from 18.00-20.00. That didn't suit me, I'll listen it back later this week.
'I will surrender my heart to the sky
Oh, our love doesn't end here, it lives forever on the wings of time'

Toto - Wings of time (Kingdom of Desire)

Today:
Gazpacho - Bravo
Neal Morse - Sola Gratia
Rocket Scientists - Earth Below And Sky Above ~ Live In Europe & America
Alan Parsons Project - Eye In The Sky
Pendragon - Love Over Fear

np: Taskaha - Taskaha

Prog from Norway. I've read a positive review about this album, but it doesn't grip me (enough).

Yes I feared these references might not quite win you over 😉 Indeed the best way is to listen, the track Don't Blink for instance is really good.

Np Flower Kings - Waiting for miracles

Bp Dream The Electric Sleep - Beneath The Dark Wide Sky
We stare at our screens
All our lives
What a waste of eyes..

erik

Np Esthesis - The Awakening

Addictive album. References: Pink Floyd, Airbag, Porcupine Tree 😉

That's what I do:

np: The Cyberiam - Forging Nations Live

Not bad at all, but I'm not impressed by the vocals. And I hear more rhythm guitars than melodies I'm afraid. But this is a live album, will play their latest studio album this week to get an impression :).

Now playing:
Dimitri Toonen - "Leave My Mind Sometimes"

I have a feeling you are going to like this Teunis.
I read somewhere that the music sounds a bit like Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson, The Pineapple Thief/Bruce Soord and Airbag/Bjorn Riis and I hear it too.
It's not bad at all! Album is released in november last year and apparently it's a Dutch guy. Hopefully we'll hear more about him.

Also listened extensively to Perfect Storm's "No Air" for a good week now. I'm pleasantly surprised! Another nice Dutch band.
I also saw that you mentioned them Erik. What do you make of it? I think it sounds a bit like 90125-era Yes. Dunno if it's accurate, but that's what it reminded me of.

Okay, on my (long) 'to play' list ;).

Today
Fischer-Z - Red Skies Over Paradise
The Pineapple Thief - Versions Of The Truth
Pink Floyd - The Division Bell

jp: The Cyberiam - Forging Nations Live

Last two tracks of the album. And indeed Erik, 'Don't Blink' may be the most accessible song.

Rather good debut, I had not thought of Yes/90125 and find it hard to pinpoint their sound but it is a fresh and modern sounding album, accesible but enough proggy twists at the same time.

Today I listened to:
Pretty Pain - "Pretty In Pain"

Nice band from Brazil.

Just finished listening to:
W.E.T. - "Retransmission"
Wow, this sounds like a heavy version of (again) 90125-Yes and also Payne-Asia. The first time I listen to an album by these guys. I already knew that one of the guys is also playing in Work Of Art that I really liked a couple of years back.
Oh, and Jeff Scott Soto is the singer, but this is no Sons Of Apollo (fortunately, I would say).
Wonderful AOR. Recommended!

Teunis

Today:
Antimatter - Leaving Eden
Gazpacho - When Earth Lets Go
Kingcrow - The Persistence
Asia - Asia
Pendragon - Men Who Climb Mountains

jp: Soen - Imperial *horns*
np: Riverside - Memories In My Head (EP)

The Pineapple Thief - Dissolution (album)

wow, these guys really sound like Porcupine Tree has continued to exist... especially with the unique drumming style of Gavin Harrison - really love it.
Arriving somewhere, but not here....

Excellent choice 8). Yeah, Mr. Harrison adds so much to the sound of TPT. Their latest release 'Versions Of The Truth' is great as well and 'Your Wilderness' also. But all the albums from 'Magnolia' are very accessible.

now listening to Prog Non Stop #522.

Today:
Gazpacho - Molok
Soen - Imperial
Threshold - Wounded Land
Neal Morse - Life & Times
Wilson & Wakeman - Stripped

np: Naryan - The Withering

According to their bandcamp site the music is "Progressive rock from Finland with elements of crossover, metal and symphonic delivered by electric and organic instruments. Think Riverside meets Anathema meets Katatonia wrapped up in lush orchestration." Well, I don't hear Riverside or Katatonia. I do hear a bit of Anathema and Antimatter, but happier. I like it, relaxing music.

Tried it, and I really like the brilliant musicianship and production, but: man, it all sounds so "cheesy" somehow.
Going for some "real" rock music ;)
Slash - Living the Dream
also, very highly recommended, especially track 2: "Serve You Right".  *horns*
all my opinion, naturally, not facts ;D

Nosound - Afterthoughts
Shadow Gallery - Room V *horns*
Soen - Imperial 8)
Soup - Remedies
Riverside - Voices In My Head (EP)

np: Temple Of The Stars - Nightspirit

It was recommended by my brother. It's relaxing music which reminds me a bit of Mike Oldfield and Irish Folk music. Nice, but you have to be in the right mood for it.

Today I listened twice to Maxxess - "Reactivate"
Really nice instrumental Progressive Rock with Electronic music mixed in. But it's very guitar driven. There are not many instrumental albums that I like, but this really grabbed me!
In fact I'm now listening for a third time!
For some strange reason it reminds me of Devin Townsend in places. But also Tangerine Dream, Ozric Tentacles, Vangelis. Even Porcupine Tree.

Iggy

This week I have listened to all of the transatlantic albums and am looking forward to tommorrow's release

Today:
Gazpacho - Tick Tock
Genesis - We Can't Dance
Soen - Imperial

np: Transatlantic - The Absolute Universe: Forevermore (Extended Version)

On Spotify. First listening, now the second cd is spinning. Quality indeed, but it needs more listenings to sink in I'm afraid. Too long to hear both cd's after each other as far as i'm concerned :).

I was also listening to Transatlantic since last Friday. But something happened that I didn't know could ever happen: I grew tired of this Transatlantic album.
I recognise the quality of this new album(s) and some parts are really catchy. But as a whole, it's a bit too much for me right now, I guess. :)
This means I will leave it to rest for a couple of days. It probably will end up to be a fantastic album for me, eventually.
