Title: Stream of Passion
Post by: Appelmoes?? on Sun, 2005-10-23, 11:48:44
Yes, finally the debut-album, Embrace the Storm' from Arjen's new "project" Stream of Passion is out. Actually, this time it's a real band, so it's not an all-Arjen-on-instruments album and 10-20 different singers.
At first I liked it, but not in a way I like Ayreon or Arena. It didn't had that "wow"-factor. I've listened to it a few times now and it took me a while to get used to. I expected another Ayreon-like sound, but got something that is not.
As soon as I started to think of this as "a band" and not an "Ayreon-like-thingy" I started to like it more, almost up to the "wow"-factor. I still like Ayreon better, but hey, that's just my personal taste.

I think the album has a modern sound, yet doesn't sound too progressive (which is imo a very good thing :)). The album features some good strong and heavy songs as well as a few soft ballads and Marcela's voice works for both.
Another plus, imo, is the fact that you don't go all the time: "ah, that was Arjen... And there he was again...".
Also, there are no keyboards on this album, only a piano. The piano gives the music a unique sound I think and of course it works great with the ballads

Songs I like in particular are 'Embrace the Storm', 'Haunted', 'Where ever You Are' and 'Out in the Real World' (The last two use some of the same melody-lines I think)

I can recommend this album to anyone who likes music that just a little bit heavier than Arena, has good female voices and great musicians.

Oh btw, the CD and DVD are printed on 1 disc :)

Anybody else got the album allready? What do you think?

Starting to get more and more curious about it and just listened to the downloads on the website. Not completely taken yet, but suppose this may be one of those albums that has to grow on you. And since I like Ayreon, The Gathering, Within Temptation, Evanescence, I think this album will fit right in ;)

Listened to those tracks on the website a few times more and yes, it's growing on me. I'll be buying the album soon  ;)

Yes, I've got the album. Same as you, it had to grow, but the sound is incredible like all his albums. Especially the 5.1 mix is beautiful. I have the same favorite songs as you  :o. . Right now the cd is in my computer media player. It grows more and more. Though I'm a real keyboard freak, I'm not really missing it. The piano gives a ''warm" sound. Very enjoyable 8).

I ordered two times, once from plato and once from Yvette directly, should be two different things, but both signed. I must confess I couldn't stand the wait any longer a week ago or so and ... em.... don't beat me up .... consulted the mule.......

I love it. Every part of it, no songs i like more than others... at the moment. I'll be at Aschaffenburg in February to see them live, definitely!

I've bought the album, and it's great.

I like Nightwish, Within Temptation and Evanescence, but Stream Of Passion is one step beyond. It's not progg, it's not heavy, it's not goth, ... , but it's all of them.

Marcela is a great singer (she sang the Wife role in Human Equation). The rithym section is played by tho young boys, very proffesional, and the lead guitar is played by Lori, one girl that sounds like a hurricane.

There are no synths, only a real piano (great choice) and only a few post-production, so it sounds direct. Arjen only plays rithym guitar.

I'm really caught in the album. Next february they'll be playing in Madrid, so I'll be there. I can only hope that Arena will do the same!!!

Cheers

That's about the best discription I heard so far :)

Now I've had a couple more listenings to it (1.246 times or so :P) It's harder for me to have a favourite song. I like the album as a whole.

I hope this band will last and produce a lot more albums. This is by far Arjen's best project besides Ayreon IMO.

I must agree with You I bought the album as well but in fact I didn't liked it very much does remind me of the Gathering. It could have been a new the Gathering album. I like to hear a song from the Gathering but not a whole album, the songs are all the same no extra elements in it.

To me Arjens best project is the Star One project, I hope he'll make more albums like that. On the second place I would put The Ambeon project, I see Stream of Passion the least nice project.

Well ... ejem ... I have a different opinion, my favourite is Stream OP, next is Ambeon and then Star One. I think that Star One didn't improve Ayreon's heavy side (like Flight Of The Migrator). Ambeon gave some different accents to the softer side of Arjen (maybe because of Astrid's voice).

Stream Of Passion doesn't sound like an Arjen's side project, and that's a great new for me. When I heard he was going to create a new project I thought that it would sound like Ayreon, and fortunately I was mistaken.

Maybe you don't like it much because of that... ;)
Title: Re: Stream of Passion
Post by: Teunis on Fri, 2005-11-11, 18:07:06
I find it difficult to compare those projects. It depends on my mood what I'm going to play. When I want something heavy, Star One is coming out of my speakers. 'Lift-off' and then: 'Set Your Controls'. Oh yeah!!!  8)
Ambeon is the more 'ambient' music with more synthesizer and special effects.
Stream of Passion has some heavier songs, but in common it has more 'warm' music by using the piano, celli and violins.
I can't choose what my favorite project is, love them all ???.
Title: Re: Stream of Passion
Post by: Appelmoes?? on Fri, 2005-11-11, 18:58:08
With Ambeon and Star One Arjen wanted to play specificly ambient and heavy stuff. He "made" SoP because he wanted to play in a band again I think. So where Ambeon and Star One show 2 sides of his music on separate albums, SoP shows how Arjen plays in a band. Like in Vengeance Arjen doesn't take the spotlight in SoP, but takes his place as a bandmember. My respect for him as a musician has only grown by that because he shows he can still be modest even when he has proven to be one of the best things that happened to prog in the Netherlands, Europe and even the world I dare say in the last decade. (Together with Arena ofcourse :D)

For me I can say that when I realised that SoP wasn't just another Arjen-project-thingy, I began to like the music much more.

Yes!!! It's amazing to see that a genious like Arjen plays ONLY rithym guitars on an album. He wants Marcela to be the frontman (frontwoman, sorry), and everyone in SoP is at least as important as Arjen is.

Marcela wrote the lyrics and I guess that also most of the vocal melodies, and she has done a great job. I can ensure you that Nostalgia (the song completely written in spanish) has a precious lyrics. Is much more difficult to write in spanish than in english, IMO.

I can see many downloaders around here  ;D the translation is into the booklet ;) (my mouth is closed  :-X)

NOSTALGIA
With her eyes fixed on the sea
She looks for a sign among the waves
Something to make her forget the truth.
An entire life filled with tears.
She surrenders to madness, then goes quiet
For the love of a day
that will never come back.
When the rose dies
She'll find peace in those useless words
For the love of a day
That will never come back.

And now the two spanish spoken parts of Haunted (also in the booklet):

Entire days I spend walking in silence
I hurry my steps to leave everything behind;
In solitude I search for a space
To forget the voice that haunts me.

A whisper that digs into my soul
A constant and upsettin thought.
I know you're there, even though I can't see you,
I was never able to escape from
Your cruel eyes.

None of them are really great translations, they don't sound very well, I can't understand it. They are much more interesting in spanish, but...that's the magic.

Bye everybody!

Well.. I like it, but not as all the other stuff Arjen have done.
It may be because I don't like bands like Nightwish and Evanescense.. It just sounds like Evanescense to me.. And that is because of the vocal. I kn ow she's a good singer, but I don't like it. Especially in that kind of music...

Especially as she is Mexican.

If anyone hasn't heard Marcela's band Elfonia then they should give them a try.
Elfonia has just released their second Album "The Sonic Landscape" with a guest appearence by Arjen.

The first cd "Elfonia" is all in spanish.

Well, I bought the album with no great expectations, somehow. This is good, because otherwise, it would probably have been a disappointment for me.

The Pros:
- perfect production and sound
- Marcela is a great singer
- nice atmosphere (when it comes in doses)
- spanish vocals are cool on that one

The Cons:
- perfect production and sound
- songs are mostly "nice average", only two or three that really stick out a bit
- too few variation of sound, mood, rhythms and melodies - it's all too similar
- that, for me concludes that I go to sleep, considering the whole length of the album

So, after all, I don't dig it too much, but it's quite nice once in a while. Yet, as far as "Goth-Prog-Rock" is concerned, you should try out the new release of The Final Season - Contrasts. Small band from Germany, comparable to SOP, female singer, very good sound (though not as perfect as SOP) and much more "vivid" and variable than SOP.

Danke.

Music-wise they sound promising, although pretty much demo-like. The singer is ... embarassing.

Hey appelmoes,
Yep, I have the dual disc of Stream of Passion as well. I love it (both sides of the disc) and listen to it nearly every day.
It helped me through a difficult month last year. Feeling down, but regaining strenght by listening to the great musicianship of the bandmembers! Each and every one of them are doing a hell of a job on this cd.
I have more music from Arjen Lucassen (the founding member of SOP) like Aeyron, Ambeon and Star One.
Would be great to see the band playing live in the Netherlands this year. Do you know where they play?
Anyway: as I'm Dutch you can also reply in het Nederlands on the Dutch section.

Groet, talk to you later,

I liked it a lot, much better than the CD, which I thought was a bit too much of the gathering.
The keyboardplayer didn't really shine on the Ayreon stuff, obviously because the synths were lacking (mainly piano instead), but the SoP-stuff was good.
Ad an extra Damian Wilson joined on some stuff (I think you can guess which tracks) and to be honest: tahtw as thé highlight of the evening.
I liked his support slot a lot as well.... shivers!

Today they have released a little movie about the upcoming DVD... you can download it on the official site...
(in the "download" category, the link on the "news" page doesn't work)

It's a great movie for as far as i can see... the problem is is that it's an ".mp4" (well I think it is) and i can't play those... i can only force windows media player to play it.. it does work but everything goes WAY too fast... when i hear the music play the movie is already at the end :(

but even then it sounds reallllly cool  *horns*  *horns*  *horns*

ADDED:
I finally found the sollution... Quicktime player 7.1 can play Mpeg-4 files....O YEAHHHHHH *horns*

Cyborg-Frask and I wanted to go to the SoP-gig in The Hague in the venue "Paard van Troje". But my parents told me that there are a lot of people smoking drugs etc.
When I went to the Kino-gig in "De Boerderij", Zoetermeer, I haven't seen anyone smoking drugs or something. I was wondering, does anyone know something about the drugs of Paard van Troje? ;D

On the website of paard.nl it says:

6. Handel in soft- en harddrugs en gebruik van harddrugs is in het Paard van Troje verboden.

Which means:

6. Dealing soft- and harddrugs and using harddrugs is forbidden in het Paard van Troje.

So they don't say anything about using softdrugs...

I want to go to the SoP gig but how do I convince my parents?

Indeed we didn't, but did you know that on the other side on the "boerderij" there is a cafe where they serve...ahh well more then just cola :P if you ask me

Hmmm personally i don't smoke drugs... i know a lot of people who do actually, mainly colleagues of me. They don't mind to get a joint afther work... very nice guys :D

But you are right..."'t paard van Troje" does have the 'image' as a place where are quite some people that do smoke drugs..

Well.... it was great! I think the live-show is MUCH better, though I learned to appreciate the album since I saw them live a lot more (strange, same thing happened to me with Star One).
I think the atmosphere was even better than in The Hague, but the sound was bit less (on the loud side, for my taste)...

o man look at this....

Stream of Passion suffered a terrible blow on Friday afternoon when the band arrived at Calais, France to board the Ferry to England. The Mexican band members were instantly separated from the group, and each other, and were interrogated by British and French Police for four grueling hours. All because the British immigration service was convinced they were intending to take up illegal residence in England.

The immigration service asked Naomi, the band's tour manager, to provide them with evidence to the contrary, and listed the types of documents required. And though Naomi jumped through every one of their newly found hoops, and repeatedly produced whatever documentation they demanded as proof, they could not be persuaded. Even with the help from the kind promotors of the concerts in England, various Embassy officials, and immigrant agents in Britain (who told the tour manager there shouldn't have been any problem for them to enter the UK in the first place) there was no changing their minds. This eventually led to the 'deportation' of Marcela, Alejandro and Diana without any possibility for them to get to England to perform the shows.

It appears the Mexicans have fallen unfortunate victims of, as one British Immigration agent trying to help said: "the new British political flavor of the year: 'we hate all immigrants'".

Stream of Passion returned home that same day, extremely disappointed and disillusioned with the proceedings. They wish to apologize to all the British fans and to those fans who travelled from various countries all over the world, for being unable to make it to these last two shows. They deeply regret not being able to perform for you this last time, as they were also so much looking forward to meeting you all again.

well that sucks if you wanted to one of those UK gigs....It's clear that those guys from the British immigration service are not SOP fans.. ::) . Very sad story tho, I mean... they have been in the UK before....so why is this suddenly a problem?

What a stupidity, I cannot believe this. In Germany we have a rude saying, which basically means that the guy who was the supervisor for this day must have been rejected in bed the night before by his wife or the like...

Yeah I know what you mean.
He doesn't have control over his wife so he tries to have control over other people.

Very sad actually.
I hope they'll be playing in the UK sometime soon, this was very embarrasing.

Well... It seems SoP won't be the same again.

Quote from: Interview With ArjenWhat are your plans concerning Stream of Passion at this moment?

Because I will be fully concentrating on the new Ayreon for at least the next year, I have no more time for SoP, so I quit the band. It would be unfair to have them wait until I'm ready, especially now things are going so well for SoP.

Does this mean the end of Stream of Passion?

Fortunately not, the band will continue without me. They will write their own songs and I'm sure there's enough talent in the band to make a great new album and undertake successful tours without me pulling the strings.

For the full article: http://ayreon.com/ayreon/ay_interview_13.html

For me this means that it's not gonna be that interesting anymore, since I thought that Elfonía was nice but nothing special actually.
Maybe this is gonna be totally different ('cause Lori knows what she's doing), but for now I'm sad.

I'm sorry but i have to disagree with the both of you.  Arjen may be a hell of a songwriter but that doesn't mean that when he leaves SoP the band will parish in utter nothingness. I'm sure that the rest of the Streamy's have plenty skills to make another great album. And i somehow can't compare Stream Of Passion with Elfonia.  ;)

So even without Arjen, i would buy the next album too if being released.  8)

But like always...

That's my opinion.  ;D
Title: Re: Stream of Passion
Post by: Appelmoes?? on Mon, 2007-03-05, 21:15:05
The only thing Arjen did for SoP were:
- Send some melody lines to Marcela
- Play rythmguitar

Without Arjen they just have to think of melody lines for themselves and find another guitarplayer. And since they all are extremely talented, I think that shouldn't be a problem. I bed you won't even notive the difference. Arjen did more "behind the scene" work.

Ok...

More news!

Lori and Alejandro have also left the band.

This means that Johan van Stratum, Davy Mickers and Marcela Bovio are the only original bandmembers.

Yup, it seems I'm right after all: SoP is as good as dead. Without Arjen we don't get the same "feeling", now Lori's gone we don't have the "howling and haunting" guitar solos. Without Alejandro the mysterious and melodic key touches are gone.

But we have a rhythm section and a voice! Yay!

:P

I don't agree on the fact that SoP is "as good as dead". The remaining bandmembers are quite determined to keep the band alive. And I also don't agree on the fact Arjen was responsible for "The feeling". That was most Marcela, Alejandro and Lori's doing, because they were repsonsible for the melodies. Arjen just wrote the basics as a start.
I could have lived with Arjen leaving, since he "only" played rythmguitar, but now I'm afraid the sound will change to much. But I have confidence in the three remaining musketeers.

But supposing they brought in Clive Nolan on keys and John Mitchell on Guitar, OK not going to happen, but supposing musicians of that caliber were found? It could acctually improve things!
We'll never know till it happens of course but there is still room for maybe a small amount of optimism!

You know what? You're absolutely right. (You feel a "but" coming on?)
But! (there you have it)
Changing the line-up is changing the direction.
The SoP sound was made by the people who left now. Bringing in new members means bringing in new musical directions which can lead to something beautiful of course! But it's gonna be different for sure. Can they still name it Stream Of Passion?

Only time will tell I suppose...

Just read this blog on MySpace, another change in lineup:

Farewell Davy / New SoP drummer
After many years of great musical collaboration, Stream of Passion and drummer Davy Mickers decided to part ways. Due to personal reasons, Davy took this step as he needs to devote more of his time to his family. Thus, he could not longer give Stream of Passion 100% of his energy. The band members wish him much happiness on this new journey in his life!

Stream of Passion is thrilled to present their fans with their new drummer: Martijn Peters. Martijn earned his extraordinary skills by playing and touring with bands like novAct, Backwater and Stentorian. He joined Stream of Passion just in time to play with them on the upcoming dates in support of their highly anticipated new album "The Flame Within".
