Here is the 'Best Epic' poll!
Of course there are plenty of other tracks I could have put in here... I just decided not to!Â
Each track clocks in at over 10 mins... that's why they are included, and tracks like "Comfortably Numb", "Stairway To Heaven", and "Bohemian Rapsody", etc... are not. :)
It seems a little obvious, maybe, that I'd choose "Moviedrome" here, but it is such a great track. It doesn't sound the same all the way through. There are lots of different textures, to keep me interested... (Example... "Tubular Bells" goes on, and on, and on...)
Anyway...
1 vote each then, here we go!
Where are the other Dream Theater and Threshold pieces? :P
Supper's Ready
Really!
That song is sooooo good. There's a lot to think about in that song.
It's the first epic I ever heard.
And I like songs with references to the Bible.
At the end, the climax is so well done! When the song ends I feel my body shake and the goosebumps are all over me.
Moviedrome is very good too. That song has very much different musical ways, but still manages to sound like 'one' song without sounding 'too long'. I think that's very difficult.
But Genesis is the Master of Prog, it's the norm of Prog. The setter of Prog. Prog begins with Genesis and ends with this very song 'Supper's Ready' by Genesis.
Sorry for my Genesisness. :)

Something I'd like to know.
Octavarium is one of my favourites too.
1. Supper's Ready
2. Moviedrome
3. Octavarium
Yes Sir! ;)
I'm going to have to think about this one for awhile before voting. There are just too many good songs listed here, such as Moviedrome, 2112, Super's Ready, etc. Maybe we should ahve gotten 2 or 3 votes! ;D

Oh, I voted for Moviedrome, that song just does more to me than the other songs in the list I know.
But I can name other songs that I like even more.
Octavarium - DT
The Great Debate - DT
Narciccus - Threshold
Awaken !! Brilliant, especially the live version on Keys To Asencension.
Honourable mention for Rocking Horse (20:00 mins.) by Australian prog band Aragon.
Regarding the list:Â Marillion's House seems an odd choice (in this context, love the song), shouldn't it be either Interior Lulu, or The Invisible Man or This Strange Engine ? And, some Spock's Beard maybe?
@PH: no need to apologise for 'Genesisness', that's a good trait ::)
Hmmm, Moviedrome, quite clearly for me.

At this stage that may not be fair on those who have already cast their votes. I'm not sure they can vote again! :-\
Though I will try not to let others' opinions sway me, perhaps you are right. I was leaning toward "Moviedrome" but I will abstain from voting.
What?? No Cinema Show??? :-\
Has to be 'Close to the Edge' out of that lot.
I agree the Cinema Show is right up there, though I'd nominate the live version on Seconds Out.
As for 'House', are you sure you aren't getting it mixed up with 'Interior Lulu'? The latter is fantastic, the former - well it's just the noise at the end of .com. ;D
There... changed "House" to "Interior Lulu".
...And no. I will NOT be changing ANYTHING else!
:)
Hehe, I should have added of course that that's only my opinion. ;D
Too many choices, only one vote >:(
Went for Echoes in the end 8)

Just in time!! ;)
House is a beautiful song in my opinion :)
... I voted for Harvest Of Souls...... I listen to it one time a day since I got the album more than one year ago and I'm not yet bored of it!!!!! I think the ending is one of the most beautiful piece of music I've ever listen.......
But the band I really miss in this poll is The Flower Kings!!!! Where are they!! Almost all of their material is composed by epics!! In my humble opinion, The Truth Will Set You Free is by far the best epic of all epics I've ever listened to....... I've also had the honour to attend 2 of their concerts and in both case I was astonished about how they could reproduce The Truth live as well (and maybe even better) as in the studio..... FANTASTIC!!!
... and let us not forget "Back In The World Of Adventures", "Garden Of Dreams" and the more recent "Love Supreme" and "Drivers Seat"......
Anyone agrees???

I would have, but I'd already voted. :(
May be you should try 'This Strange Engine'. ;) ;D
Knock it on the head.
;D
Still no-one else who voted for the magnificent "Supper's Ready" by GENESIS... :'(
It's a very good song...
I know this is an Arena forum so I know that either Moviedrome or Solomon will come out as "The Best".
Which is no problem of course.
But the mighty GENESIS deserves more than one vote really.
I voted for 'Moviedrome' although I'm now getting into IQ. Dark Matter is a great album and 'Harvest of souls' would be the other option. I just ordered 'The Seventh House', the album before 'Dark Matter'.

... and it'll be worth the money you spent!!!! Wonderful, a real masterpiece, IMO even better than subterranea. If we are talking about epics, here we can find one of the IQ's best, the title track!!!!!! But there are also other great track as, for example, Guiding Light above the others....... Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful, ;D ;D ;D
Good listening!!!

Thanks, I already know 'Wrong side of weird', which is a great song. I heard 30 seconds of the other songs and it made me order the album.

... while for the incoming calls I put the sung ending of Harvest Of Souls!!!!!

Here is the 'Best Epic' poll!
I was doubted between Grendel from Marillion and Moviedrome, they are both great songs. But I don't understand that You put the song House of Marillion in the list, this is an awful song (like Vader Abraham in my list of best Bands), You should have chosen "Interior Lulu" but House....... how can You choose such a dreadful song. Another Marillion suggestion would be "Ocean Cloud" or "A few words for the dead", "Estonia" those songs ar nice, but House.........
It's staying there. ;)

I voted it too.
Same reasons: first epic, the ultimative climax, that bodyshaking feeling and i´m completly out of order every time I heard this song.
In fact: mostly ALL listed Titels are favourite tracks of mine; Grendel, SOYCD, Solomon, etc.
Other "Masterpieces" not listed here:
Genesis: The Musical Box
Genesis: Cinema Show
Marillion: Invisible man (!!!)
Marillion: Script for a jesters tear
Marillion: Fugazi
Arena: Sirens
Arena: Opera fanatica
Pink Floyd: Sheep
Pink Floyd: Sorrow
Archive: Again (!!!)
Archive: Wast
Yes: Endless Dream
Yes: And you and I
Neil Young: Change your mind
Neil Young: Cortez the killer
IQ: The seventh house
IQ: The last human gateway
Pendragon: The Voyager
Pendragon: Guardian of my soul
... tbc
What do you think of?

Now Keyboardist Matt has the same problem as me with my Best Band thing, people wanting to split up Marillion in 2 different bands, I thought when I begin with that there'll be no end. I thank Keyboardist Matt helping me out with beginning another poll favourite Marillion Albums. Once You make a choice Yourself and stick with it otherwise You'll get lost.
I love Moviedrome(Arena) and The Narrow Margin (IQ). Damn that's two ;) Aww, throw in Stardust We Are ;)

yes.... I also think that The Flower Kings are the great missing band from this poll.....
especially because almost their masterpieces are epics!!
Nevermind.... we could vote them in another poll! ;)
Too many to choose from nedd more than one vote. ???
Also too many missing.
My vote went to "Suppers Ready",one of my first ever live shows was Genesis with PG and I was totally blown away by "Suppers ready" that night. :)
