Camel, Genesis, and BJH were my votes...

But I'll take ANY of the others, over current product (sorry Clive...  :-[ )...

"Comfort" albums, as Julian used to call them...

Who's Julian...? Axe-Specialist with my old band...

However, I've VERY recently made it a priority to play a RECENT purchase, at least once-a-night.
That way, I'll keep the pile of "yet-to-be-played" CDs down to a manageable level...including re-issues (Steve Hackett malarkey is on the way...er, hopefully....Malc....?)
But this also keeps me in-touch with the Secret Machines and Kaisser Chiefs of this world...

And when I run out of, er, "new stuff" to play....best I buy something that I've never heard before...
...using advice from from not only my girlfriend's 24-yr old son, but also from you 'ole boys...

...witness my amazing expanding Ayreon headband collection, er, Tonto....!

Now, where've my meds gone...?

Genesis, Yes and Camel.

The first two I have loved since my teens (like over 20 years) and Camel I have recently gotten into via Hogweed.  I have been listening to loads of Camel just lately and the more I listen, the more I love.

All listed are pretty good except I don't know anything of BJH.

I have two live albums of the Phil Collins era.
The way we walk volume 1: The shorts
The way we walk volume 2: The longs
Very good albums! The medley and Home by the sea/Second home by the see are great!

And I have the album 'Calling all stations'. Don't like it as much as the Collins albums.

I have:
- 'Selling England By The Pound' (Peter Gabriel)
- 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' (Peter Gabriel)
- 'Wind and Wuthering' (Phil Collins)
And I have all songs of Genesis as MP3 on my computer :-X
But I plan on buying them all.
As for Arena.
I already bought Pepper's Ghost and I am a huge fan so I will buy all of the albums.
I first listen to something and when I like it I'll buy it, when I don't like it, I'll get rid of it.

But I came in contact with ProgRock just last year, so I was still exploring.

This is for PH:

Is a Genesis reunion in the works? Former guitarist Steve Hackett says it is indeed. Hackett, who was in the band in from 1971 to 1977, has said that overtures are being made about getting the progressive rock group back together at some point: "There's something afoot. There's a move afoot to put us together again. At some point there's a reformation mooted. It's rare that I get a call from Genesis management, very rare these days. So maybe something will happen, you know."
Hackett said the reunion would include original singer Peter Gabriel, drummer-vocalist Phil Collins, guitarist-bassist Mike Rutherford, and keyboardist Tony Banks. Nothing specific has been arranged yet, however.

Genesis shut down in 1998 after the commercial failure of Calling All Stations, the album Rutherford and Banks recorded with a new singer after Collins left the band.

Genesis recently released a three-CD retrospective, Genesis Platinum Collection, and a DVD compilation called Genesis Video Show.

What is an "old" Progband? Marillion formed in the late 70´s/very early 80´s - more than 20 years ago.
Aren´t they "old"???

Where is King Crimson and Rush? I only voted Uriah Heep, I don't really like the other ones that were in the list, I don't know Camel (maybe a big shame, I never get in touch with their music, don't see it in the music shops and difficult to find on the internet. But I knew the name, but don't know what they're playing. Pink floyd is very weird music, don't know what to think of it I listened to the album with the cow on it to Alan Psychedelic Breakfast I only heard kitchen noises there, very interesting ahum. But I really like Uriah Heep like the songs Gypsy and July Morning great songs. From Yes I only know Owner of a lonely heart, seems more popular music to me, don't really like that song very much did they make more?

For me as an old proggie, there are quite a number of groups and musicians missing on that list, most notably Beatles (the first prog group ever), Led Zeppelin, Cream, Queen, Santana, Mike Oldfield, Steve Hackett, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Rush, Marillion, Styx, and Journey.

Virtually nobody of my generation knows about The Enid (how did they get onto the list?), and Uriah Heep I don't consider as prog.

Funny since I was listening to Journey's Greatest Hits this morning and I was thinking that, at a few exceptions, this is way too cheezy AOR, even for me. And believe me, I have nothing against AOR and I will prove it again in another thread in a few seconds  ;D

How many prog albums did they [Beatles] create?

Iac from Rubber Soul on, every Beatles album was a revolution in rock.

Beatles were probably more prog than any group since. Man, all the styles that they created and brought into rock, and all the philosophy. Tellya this was the thinking man's rock in those days. Everybody else was singing about won and lost love; Beatles were singing about realising your inner potentials, finding divinity, helping the poor and needy (they were themselves working class youth), and OK, also looove, but in a lovely way.

My fave Beatles album is Abbey Road. It's replete with musical and philosophical ideas. A good starting point for the Beatles Adventure  *horns*

Here's Steve Vrana's review on Amazon.com:

"For years I accepted on faith that the best album ever made was Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. While that album remains a stunning example of the summer of love, the true trinity of the Beatles oeuvre are Rubber Soul, Revolver and Abbey Road - with the nod going to Abbey Road as the Beatles' final studio album.

There is not a false note on this album. It kicks off with a forceful vocal from John Lennon on Come Together, which is balanced by the tenderness of Something, one of George Harrison's best songs (and only Beatles A-side single contribution). With Because Lennon wrote one of the loveliest melodies of his career. Even the silliness of McCartney's Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Ringo Starr's child-like Octopus's Garden exude charm and warmth from a band that was on the verge of fragmenting forever and taking some of the innocence of the sixties with them.

And then there's the Side-2 suite (tracks 9-16) which still makes for powerful listening thirty years later. Sir Paul McCartney summed it all up in The End: 'And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.' And so the curtain rang down on the best rock 'n' roll band in our lifetime.

ESSENTIAL"

Revolution doesn't always mean progression/progressive. Well, it depends on what you mean with progression/progressive and in what way/which direction it progresses.
I always thought they were pop. With the exception of a few albums (which I've never heard by the way).

Paco, man, you can't be a serious proggie without having absorbed the Beatles classic albums. That's like saying that you're well-versed in classical music without having listened properly to Bach, or that you're a drama buff without having studied Shakespeare.

Prog or not, these are the guys who made rock serious. Before them it was all pop.

I know that some older people really love the Beatles and that it was part of their musical journey, but to me they sound like old popmusic.
And we're talking about popmusic that was better than today's popmusic, indeed.

I mean, ABBA made very cool songs. They were pop not prog, but not like pop today. Prog and pop weren't as much two divided worlds as they are today. Many pop bands (NOTE: 'pop bands' instead of 'pop artist', this is a crucial difference!) made the odd prog song or even prog album, but that doesn't make them progressive...
And there was also jazz, blues and rock-'n'-roll.
Next time you tell me that Elvis was prog...

Quote from: Nicky007 on Wed, 2008-04-23, 15:39:53Prog or not, these are the guys who made rock serious.

I can only agree.

Paco, you see it most clearly in the lyrics:  Abba and Elvis had silly lyrics, while Beatles had interesting lyrics, if not always philosophical, at least puzzling.

And let's face it:  What distinguishes proggies from other rockers is that proggies ponder upon lyrics  8)  (and are more intelligent, but I didnt say that)  ;D

Let's leave jazz and blues out of it; they have their own dynamics.

So a New Age type of music could be prog as long as the lyrics are philosophical... ::) I know you love poetry, Nicky, but you have to admit that in prog the singing serves the music and not the other way round (like with pop music).

Song structures... you forgot song structures, my friend. Prog is not limited to the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-syndrome.
And you already mentioned the word dynamics. Let's use it again here. In Prog, the dynamics are very important. Pop music is often static, while prog is organic and dynamic. The music is more important than the lyrics, since there's also brilliant instrumental prog.
Heck, I might even say that the lyrics are probably amongst the most unimportant factors of what makes prog prog.

For the third time: the MUSIC itself is what distinguishes proggies from other rockers. And better lyrics are of course a natural outcome. (Also because prog artists often seem to be more intelligent than your normal daily rockstar ;D)

OK Paco, this is getting a bit convoluted, but if you're saying that the lyrics are less important than the (instrumental) music, that would surprise me.

E.g. what would Contagion be without all the fabulous mythological references ?

To me iac, the lyrics are an essential part of the music.

I like instrumental pieces here and there, but I rarely go for an entire album without lyrics.

Yes. I primarily listen to "music", and secundarily to "lyrics". You can say "I'm grooving on the music" but you can't groove on a lyric... :-\ Of course you can find a certain lyric really striking. But then you don't need the music with it and could just as well buy a poetry bundle.

Quote from: Nicky007 on Wed, 2008-04-23, 19:34:54E.g. what would Contagion be without all the fabulous mythological references ?
Contagion without the singing would still be prog. And thanks to the dynamics and interesting music, I think I would still enjoy that album. What about you Nicky? Would you still enjoy Contagion without singing?

Quote from: Nicky007 on Wed, 2008-04-23, 19:34:54To me iac, the lyrics are an essential part of the music.
I agree to some extend. To me, the lyrics really add to the feel of the music and to be honest, what's done is done. Indeed, it's hard to imagine Ascension without vocals. But you can't imagine Riding The Tide WITH singing either. That's just because you're getting used to it. When Arena would decide to release a full instrumental album, I'd certainly buy it. But when Britney Spears [or any pop machine] makes an instrumental album...

Quote from: Nicky007 on Wed, 2008-04-23, 19:34:54I like instrumental pieces here and there, but I rarely go for an entire album without lyrics.
Ok, let's put it this way.
What if you got two CDs: an instrumental Abbey Road from The Beatles and an instrumental Contagion from Arena. Both without any singing on it. But still the lyrics are printed in the booklet.
Which album would you prefer? And what's the difference between these two "stripped" albums?

I'm not saying that the Beatles [or any pop artist/band] is bad. Just that it's not prog. I can appreciate music that's focused on singing, but it's different from Prog (which is more focused on the music).

Contagion without Rob singing ?  No way  :o

I would like neither Abbey Road nor Contagion without the singing.

Arena are actually a very singing oriented group. Clive's a great lyricist. OK, there's some fabulous guitar playing by John, but that couldnt carry a whole album.

The times of long atmospheric Floydian instrumental passages are over. We have a shorter attention span today.

If we're talking about exciting instrumental prog, we have to cross the Atlantic where we find musicians who have a greater spectrum of expression like Steve Vai and Michael Harris, and groups like Aghora, Stride, Thought Chamber, and Zero Hour. Also DT could make a great instrumental album, although I would miss Jamie terribly.

OK, Sieges Even could also pull it off. And Spiral Architect. But the British groups are so very singing oriented.

Removing the lyrics and singing from prog is like removing the guitar, bass, or drums. OK, it can be done, but why ?

Also, poetry and rock lyrics are entirely different things.

Nicky.

I agree a lot on the first. Good point. But the second point seems a bit too narrow, for want of a better word. Some rock lyrics are pure poetry. And to my mind, those are the best, most beautiful lyrics. I don't quite manage to see the attraction in lyrics with no poetic side to them. "Hell yeah, it's Saturday nite and we'll party... come on baby" and all that is typical rock lyrics, devoid of poetry. And if you ask me, they either suck or are idling words, just there because there is a singer present. The lyrical equivalent of a drum machine keeping time and not much else.

Shadow Gallery had some wonderful, poetic lyrics on the "Carved in stone" album. I feel an urge to kiss the ground before their feet...

To the topic, is Marillion an 'old' prog band? If not, I don't know what to reply. I don't much enjoy any of them. I like a lot of the bands they inspired, though.

Deenie, I'l give you a sublime sample of true poetry, from Robert Browning's Paracelsus, beginning of Part V:

Thus the Main glideth
Where my Love abideth.
Sleep's no softer: it proceeds
On through lawns, on through meads,
On and on, what'er befall,
Meandering and musical,
Through the niggard pasturage
Bears not on its shaven ledge
Aught but weeds and waving grasses
To view the river as it passes,
Save here and ther a scanty patch
Of primroses too faint to catch
A weary bee.
And scarce it pushes
Its gentle way through strangling rushes
Where the glossy kingfisher
Flutters when noon-heats are near,
Glad the shelving banks to shun,
Red and steaming in the sun,
....

See, this is English poetry at its best.

I would say that it would be a pity to sing this in any way. It's so powerful in itself. All it needs is some Laurence Olivier or Kenneth Branagh who can render it sublimely in speech. And then I'm as ecstatic as when listening to Contagion (NP).

What one can do with such poetry is recite it with some background music, but then the music has to be just as sublime.

Somebody like Clive could do it (hint?) :)

But of course there's a lot of fine poetry in rock lyrics, just not quite up to this extraordinary level.

Nicky.

Hey Paco, now you're being Appish. What don't you agree about ?

Would Contagion be just as good without the lyrics and Rob's singing ?

Sure would keep us wondering what in living hell is mean by "Contagion". Then it could just as well be called Opus 5 (1.movement: Allegro con moto; 2. mm: Andante ....).

I'l love you more (in a temporal sense) if you make an effort to answer me properly  :)

This is turning into a very proggy thread. Twists and turns unimaginable...

Well, Nicky, that is certainly a fine piece of poetry, although not smack in the middle of what I would prefer personally. I do absolutely see your point, and based on that perspective and your prepositions, it is a matter of "case closed". There are also lyrics that can be proclaimed more than sung, with success, or vice versa.

This is my kind of poetry; it reads out really well, it could be rendered sublimely in speech, I think, but the main point is I like my poetry sung, to music. So it's a bit of a different animal, I think you'll agree. Ok, here goes:

3. Don't Ever Cry, Just Remember

[Music: B. Allman, C. Ingles, G. Wehrkamp Lyrics, Vocal Melodies: C.Cadden-James]

I must have stood for hours
The mist of dawn still rising
Brushing from my face
Cold tears of finally knowing
The world that we had twisted
The years of strength and glory
Were wicked and obscene
And there we stood so proud
What legends we must be
Really something to behold Lord
So irresponsible
With the powers of creation
A princess crowned in jewels
Robed in the finest cloth
Dauntlessly invincible
So perfect so unreal

In one great moment judgements fallen
Babylon no longer there
Gone are her streets her giant towers
Disappeared into thin air
Don't ever cry just remember

It must have been my mood
I'm usually much stronger now
I know there's just one way
And this is how it has to be
There was poison in our thoughts
And there was hatred in our eyes
Suddenly something came
Something made it right
We purged our hearts and souls
And we saw through children's eyes
Not stifled by the pain
Not blinded by our
Human nature don't you see at all
The wisdom of our suffering
The lies behind our ways
The reasons for the end

From the moment I was raptured
Babylonia disappeared
I now return here a survivor
The rest have vanished to thin air
Don't ever cry just remember

The wind blows cold tonight
No lamplights from no windows
I am sure enough alone
And I am sure enough alive
So through eternity
The gift of light gets passed along
to those of us who saw
What the rest could never see
Born to a fallen world
Longing for a morning star
Held on high
For me
As this vision comes to close
The last footsteps ever wonder here
They echo in my mind
Never to return

All is done and slowly fading
Babylon she once stood there
I walked her streets I climbed her mountains
I disappear into thin air
Don't ever cry just remember

I mourn those who go through life without appreciating something like this. And I am heartened that there are people writing like this, when I cannot. Where is the "solemn" emoticon....?

Ok Nicky...

The lyrics give it an extra touch. I agree 100%.
But what I'm just saying is that if the Beatles would have silly lyrics, they wouldn't be prog right?
But if Arena got silly lyrics, then it would still be prog, thanks to the music.

I don't know how to say it better than how I just said it. For me it's obvious.

It's hard to get a prog band with silly lyrics though, because proggers are often very interested in deep lyrics.
But alright, I think A.C.T comes close:

Quote from: A.C.T, She/MaleShe Grew Up, Became A Man, What's Going On?
Parents Told Her:
Disappear, Don't Turn Around.
Please, Never Come Back,
Go Away, And Pack Your Bags, Filthy One.

Filled With Sorrow She Threw Out Some Of Her Old Clothes.
All Her Skirts She Now Had Drowned In Gasoline.
Flames Touching The Sky,
Burning Up Her Old Life, No Regrets.

Growing A Beard, Finally A Man.

Please Accept That She Is Nothing But A Normal Guy.
We Can't Help That She's Been Raised In A Narrow-Minded World.
Scratching His Crutch, Just Like Real Men Do.
Filled With Strength, Takes Another Step.

To Become A Full-Grown Man She Needed Help.
A Crazy Little Swedish Surgeon Took Her Case.
Cut, Pasted And Sewed, Changing Her Totally, Renewed And Gay.

Shoulders Now Broad, Finally A Man.

Please Accept That She Is Nothing But A Normal Guy.
We Can't Help That She's Been Raised In A Narrow-Minded World.
Scratching His Crutch, Just Like We All Do.
Filled With Strength, Entering The World!

Something Appeared.
What A Nice Surprise That Was.

Very silly lyrics (and A.C.T has more and more and MORE of these silly lyrics), but the music is VERY prog.
So this is a fully progressive band, but without the thing that makes prog prog (according to Nicky).

Disagree !  There's a very important message about narrow-mindedness and lack of love and tolerance.

This song is probably inspired by the story of a real person they knew or read about.

I want you. I want you so bad. I want you. I want you so bad.

Gryphon.

Their Treason album is a must-have - but scarily expensive (on Ebay, c.£30+).

Beltane Fire sadly never did get their distrubition deal (Malc @ GFT turned then down), but their first (and only) LP Different Breed is quality.

Don't forget City Boy....

Thanks for reminding me, I'll look into this band again. Perhaps it's worth my money.
