Title: Tour T-shirt
Post by: Clive on Wed, 2008-01-23, 17:45:16
We are thinking about making a T-shirt for this set of dates in April. However, we are unsure about the design...

Any suggestions?.... Tiny Logo? Big Picture? What picture?

- A nice black T-shirt with a tiny golden Arena logo.
- A nice white T-shirt with a tiny silver Arena logo.
- A photo of the band in Pepper's Ghost clothes.

I will think of more later on.

A black or what ever colour T-shirt, with a medium sized centre logo on the front and tourlist on the back. It's always nice to say "Yay, I was there!"

Also, I really liked the red long sleeves Arena had. It had a nice design and it was cool to see a band shirt that wasn't black. Only the downside was the size. Largest they had was L, while I need a XL at least. The one Arena shirt I do have is an XXL and that fits very nicely :)
(Yes, we dutchies are tall :D)

Or what about a hoodie? Hoodies are nice and warm when you're waiting outside a for a gig :D

And how about some very strong lines from lyrics? (A la nightwish) My personal favourite is "and dream until you hit the ground". A bit depressive yes, but I like it :) I think Clive has writen excellent lyrics and there's bound to be a dozen of good one-liners. Combine them with a single image that refers to the album it's from. For example: the Lantern Clive is holding in the cover art, would make a nice reference to PG.

I'm actually a bit put-off by those standard black-with-tourdates-on-back-shirts nowadays. So try to come up with something a bit more...dare I say it...fashionable. Something that you can easily wear everyday without everybody thinking you are some dead metal freak...

Big picture on the front!

Small logo and no dates? BORING!

I agree with Tom.

I know a metalhead and he always wears this metal T-shirt, with tourdates on back and (ugly) frontcover on front. The first thing that comes up in my mind is "Doesn't he wash this T-shirt? Or has he more than one of these?" But the second thought is always "You don't want to walk in public wearing THAT?"
I mean, it's cool to have it, and you can wear it at concerts, but you don't wear them at work, or in front of a class (I'm studying for teacher).
Something fashionable would be cool. No tourdates on back and no album cover on front. (at least not in a way that you can see the shape of a square.)

Ayreon has albumcover on front of T-shirts, but in a good way (http://www.ayreon.com/store/t_fe.jpg) It blends with the background, you don't see the square of the cover.
Here is another example (http://www.ayreon.com/store/t_he.jpg) of the front of one of these shirts, with just a logo (a small picture on the upper left of the shirt), which is nice, I think. But on the back it's too much text I think.

These are samples of how it also could be done.

Quote from: ironcow2103 on Wed, 2008-01-23, 22:23:26Tour dates... tour dates... tour dates... please!
Why tour dates? You can't see them when it's on your back, and no one else in real life will want to read it anyway. The Kino T-shirt had a nice alternative: an explaination of the word "Kino", which is nice, funny and better than tour dates.

Quote from: ironcow2103 on Wed, 2008-01-23, 22:23:26Big picture on the front!
Yeah, but it's always the front cover... and always badly done... Try a different shape instead of that square, and maybe try using something from the inside of the booklet instead of always that front cover...

Arena could try to put the comic strips on a shirt.

Just my thoughts.

I also liked this suggestion someone in the room made earlier - see picture below, T-shirt design on the right hand side.

I'm sure something similar could be done with the Pepper's Ghost artwork!

Not black !!

I like 'quiet' understated, plain and simple T shirts - go grey, with smallish Arena logo top left, with one of the following on front (things which true fans 'get' and mean something to us and cause others to ask questions) whatever you go with you must also print web site links (both band page and Fan club page) perhaps on the back.

Am I 'Immortal?'

Welcome To The Cage

Contagion
–noun. the communication of disease by direct or indirect contact

I am 'The Visitor'

Perhaps do the whole set - it might encourage people to buy more than one ! Whatever you do just make sure that they're available online aswell and not just at concerts, as with the poor tour dates in England (Reading or bust) not many of us UK fans will have chance to get one otherwise.

Why don't you use the PH's drawing (or something alike but a bit more "finished") ? http://shattered-room.net/index.php?topic=150.msg14064#msg14064  I am serious about it.

You could put it on front. On rear, you could have something very classical, like the Arena logo and "Ten Years On Tour" with the dates below. Like some other roomies, I like the T-Shirt to embody particular tour and places.

For the colour, it could be grey because it's more sober than black for an every day's use.

Sadly we have tried 'other colour' shirts, and usually they don't sell very well.
We have put shirts on line.. and manage to sell about four a year!
The small subtle logo on the front is a big non-seller!

So.... a black T-shirt WITHOUT a large rubber square on the front....  good plan! Something more than a little logo though...
Maybe the dates on the back, but I like the idea of something else... lyrics, design, or some kind of statement...

But what should the artwork be? This isn't a Pepper's Ghost tour.....

Guess it's going to be black then ! (shame - not too late to change your mind to grey !!)

Dates on back, with logo and statement/lyrics on front - no major artwork !

I hear what you say about the online sales - how about getting the shirts done early and making them available to us on the forum at least, before the tour - at least that way those of us who want one and can't get to Reading  :-[ will be able to get one.

Why tour dates?

Because it is a tour t-shirt, for that tour?? If you just want a band t-shirt as a fashion/clothes item then it may as well be a generic t-shirt not a tour one... If it doesn't have dates on it could be from anytime, anywhere...

Don't disagree with that. Maiden are quite good at having specific art-work for tours based on albums, or the country or the season. Ok Arena may not have that size budget but I agree album covers are generally uninspiring wear, unless unusual or really cool like Rainbow Rising!

Twelfth Night did a variety of colours at their recent gigs. Unfortunately by the time I got there they only had black in my size, a shame as the khaki green looked really nice and I wanted that.

Don't bother with white though - yuk!

IDEAS 'TILL NOW:
- A nice black T-shirt with a tiny golden Arena logo
- A nice white T-shirt with a tiny silver Arena logo
- A photo of the band in Pepper's Ghost clothes
- Comic strips
- A black or what ever colour T-shirt, with a medium sized centre logo on the front and tourlist on the back

- A hoodie
- Some very strong lines from lyrics, combine them with a single image that refers to the album it's from
1. "And dream until you hit the ground" (The Visitor)
2. "The few that see the world beyond the Moviedrome must march on through the wilderness of fantasy, false images, and pride" (Immortal?)
3. ...
4. ...

What about all kinds of pictures from the booklets throughout the years.

Yeah, we really have to get rid of this Death Metal image. ;D

Good question. I guess it should be Arena related, so it's very difficult not to relate to an album. A picture of the members or an Arena logo are alternatives, but those are not favoured...

I'd really like artwork other than the front covers. Inner booklet artwork, like the ones of The Visitor or Immortal? or something...

If you're going for a shirt with a specific line, I think you should get an image that reflects the line and/or the song it's from.

If you use (a part of the) lyrics (eg Ayreon - Dreamtime (http://www.arjenlucassen.com/store/t_fe.jpg)) you can see it's decorated with "the eyes of time" and "the round table", two images connected to the album.

And example for Arena could be this, or just the last part of it:

Take this moment so close to my heart
You held the white rose out
Just before we parted
Take this moment so far away in dreams
I can feel the thorns bite
But the flower died, it seems

Hold this feeling so close to my heart
You brought the passion out
Just before we parted
Hold this feeling so far away in dreams
I can feel the thorns bite
But the flower starts to bleed

As decoration a single White Rose would look very nice imo, and it will be a statement that will make people think.

As for the front, you can go for the album cover (a la Ayreon as PH mentioned) or just the Arena logo.

The small subtle logo on the front is a big non-seller!

Actually, no offence but that's one of the reasons i haven't bought it yet.
To be quite blunt: it's dull.  :-\
To go on use my creditcard for a t-shirt that has to be shipped from England to good old Holland with a logo like that isn't what i had in mind.
It's not adventurous simply because the t-shirt isn't adventurous.
When you want people to order many, and i say many T-shirts it has to be a bit more colourful than that. An (previous) album-print on it, indeed like the already mentioned snippets of lyrics of Arena songs, tour dates might work but only if you come up with a new t-shirt for the next tour. (yes, i know were talking about it here but it was just an example)

I'm even a bit surprised that you didn't use the album cover of Ten Years On for the previous (little) tour.
I didn't went to the concert, sorry bout that since i was a bit busy last year to say the least but i definitely ordered something like that on the online store.

No offence of course.  ;)

Maybe something like a 'best-off' shirt(Ten Years On)? Some pieces from the previous albums or some tiny reminders of the likes. A roaring lion with in the back a picture of the old bike of the Visitor etc etc.
Dream Theater did something like that during the previous tour (octavarium) in an octagonal showing all DT's albums.

By the way: i'm rather tired so excuse me for some direct words.  :-[

Edit: This reminds me of a tiny question: What kind of tour is it then? A follow up of the Ten Years tour or a preparation for the new album?

I've done a simple thing in MS Paint to give an idea of a picture in my mind. ;D
Noah holding his hand out with the tattoo of the three interlocking horseshoes, in the blue flame.

I just don't know if it would be possible to do such a thing.
But when done properly it would make a cool shirt, I think.

Hey everybody,

Let see some more of these t-shirt example pictures on the forum, this way we can get a better idea of what you want 'YOUR' t-shirts to look like.

Some of the main points which we are after are,

1. Artwork size/position

2. Tour dates on back or not

3. What style t-shirt?

4. Colour

Also for you ladies out there what do you look for in a tour t-shirt?

Here's the thing, on the 20th Feb at the latest, the t-shirts have to be ordered to make sure they are ready in time for the tour so I suggest people you get as many ideas up on the forum as possible before then and who knows maybe we'll use yours!!

For those of you who wish to go into more detail about your t-shirt design or you have any suggestions for the merchandise stand please feel free to email your ideas to me at

smeagal_the_merchant@tiscali.co.uk

Please note that if you wish to design your own artwork you can, however we cannot guarantee that it will be used

Cheers guys,

smeag

P.s. If any of you were on the pendragon tour what did you think of the long sleeve blue/grey top?

Prog on  *horns*

I would really like to see the tourdates on the back. When I see these dates it is for me a big reminder of the concert which I saw that night.

On the front I prefer a small logo or a beautifull, not too big, design.

I'm sure it will be a great t-shirt for an impressive tour !!

Blue, yes but i'm inclined to say no to green.

If i was Mr. Nolan of course.  ;)

I always buy darker kind of t-shirts by the way. The only white one i ever bought was a DT one with a caricature of all band members.
And it somehow suits the music better.
I'd only buy a white or light t-shirt if i was a fan of Britney Spears or the likes.  ;D

Seeings as its a new tour, I'd be guessing the guys wouldnt want to re-use an old design.

Hey Marcello, that's a real great T-shirt. I'm not much of a T-shirt guy (although I have some fine ones with AIC and Opeth), but your sample really struck me: Wow !  The only beef I have is that the n looks too much like a pi, a bit confusing. However, the flamed moth, text, R with tail, and color contrasts are super !  I would say guys, let's go further with this sample.

If we wander about with this T-shirt on, people are really gonna be struck: "Hey, what's this Arena, must be somethin real special !"

What a lot of talent we got in the Room. Must be the good beer  ;D

No. I drink lots of very good beer but the more I drink the worse my very poor drawing and art skills get.

Marcello, that is a fantastic idea for a shirt. Very clever and rather striking, but would it have tour dates on the back? ;D

I think this is almost as iconic as the butterfly man shirt, which I really liked.

I could even do without the lettering (or much smaller). If it just had the moth on it, I think I would wear it outside the concert-hall as well.  ;D

I posted some examples earlier here:

http://shattered-room.net/index.php?topic=1016.msg20884#msg20884

And this is the shirt I've been wearing this summer:

Simply, because it's a piece of fashion rather than the average tour-shirt.

WOWOWOW I've never seen this butterfly man T and had no idea it existed. Anyone got a picture of it? For non-black T's by the way, those ones you posted are really cool looking.

I drink lots of cheap beer because I'm a student, its clearly that!  :P

The only beef I have is that the n looks too much like a pi, a bit confusing.

LOL I thought about this when I was making it, I wanted to try something without the modern arena logo, I also thought of trying one with ARENA written on it like on the back of smoke and mirrors where it says "ARENA are:". Perhaps that and a picture too? I dunno, just throwing ideas about  :)

I agree with JJ II on everything he said (in this topic). ;)

By the way, you remind me to buy that extremely neat Lamb Lies Down shirt! 8)

Right, so would the general agreement be we don't want a black shirt, and would rather opt for something more fashionable and cool?

Lamb t is awesome BTW  :)

Yeah, I just don't know where to buy it... it's not on the official Genesis shop (anymore?)...

I think it was on sale during the Calling All Stations tour in 98.

I think it would be brave of Arena to make something outside the common ground. I like the moth idea, but a multi-coloured shirt would be nice as well.
Since it's april colours will do better anyway.

Wow, that's a really cool shirt. Not the average metalhead black thingy, but really stylish. Like it.

First of all - wow, Marcello, I really like your suggestions, they're all great and if those shirts were on sale I'd have a hard time to decide which one to buy (and would probably have to get them all)!

Speaking of t-shirts - I liked the black 'Contagion' girlie shirt (see pic - sorry, it's a bit blurred) very much and would be happy if something similar was available, even though it's another black one.

As I've said, they are just a couple of ideas of what I think I'd like, and I'm really pleased that other people have similar views, although as people have been pointing out, maybe its time for Arena to try somehting more fashionable rather than the generic black band t with a picture slapped on it!

BTW clearly at work in that photo LOL

Well, I personally wouldn't insist on a black shirt, but it's always difficult to pick a colour that will "suit" everyone... some prefer blue, others like green or red... tricky! But the artwork you did is simply great and should work on any colour shirt.  :)

Erm... yes, but getting ready for the Christmas party, so that means we've already had loads of champagne at the time this pic was taken. (That's probably why I had to sit down...  ;D)
