Yeah, sorry, Bups, I was a bit too fast there, it's usually Paxi who's sniffing around in these crannies of the Room ::)

Yup, listened a lot to Muse since then. They'r really fabulous *horns*

Three more groups go to my prog pantheon:

Alanis Morissette, Von Hetrzen Brothers, Megadeth -> prog pantheon

I'm only doin this to confound Paxi :o

;D

Alanis' music is maybe not quite pantheon, altho she does have some super passages here and there, but she is very earnest and expressive, and one learns a lot about things from a modern woman's perspective. Women wanna be in on everything now, and we men can only be happy about that, help them join in, and enjoy the dialectics of it :)

Von Hertzen Brothers are obviously pantheon with their music. In fact I haven't even studied their lyrics properly, waiting for the New Day Rising cd. Anyone beyond Teunis and me who's gotten into this superb band ?

I listened a lot to Rust in Peace, it was great, but didn't quite make it to my pantheon :-\

When I recently listened to Countdown to Extinction, I could immediately hear that this was extraordinary, pantheon *horns*

I think that there's some kangarooish Frenchie who's happy to hear this ;)

I also upgraded Keep of Kalessin due to their amazing album Epistemology. E.g. Obsidian Claw belongs in the exclusive "Fave Composers" list - together with Clive and Glenn :)

What I don't understand about you guys is why you limit yourselves so much. I mean, one can listen to something as melodic and scintillating as Muse or Von Hertzen Brothers, and then rig up for the fascinating onslaught of Keep of Kalessin or Bal-Sagoth. To me, it's like having to decide between beer and wine, or cats and dogs - I mean, why not enjoy all life's wonderful manifestations ?

Who are you to say that 'we' limit ourself so much? What is that based on? On what's posted here? Trust me, I don't post about all the music I listen to but I dare to say my taste in music is quite diverse. We have prog in common but where you're steering more towards death/extreme metal I actually listen to a lot more pop/alternative i.e. more accessible music these days (However, no Alanis I'm afraid ;)). It's just the other side of the spectrum, but that doesn't mean that I limit myself.

Oh, by the way: Von Hertzen Brothers are *horns*

Tom, I didn't have you in mind - we haven't seen much of you lately :)

I don't like the designation "death metal", and I don't use it. I think that one should keep death and metal apart - except where it makes sense to sing of death. Also "death metal" is used by people outside of the metal community to disparage metal, or just as a reflex to anything growly or thrashy. Nothing could be more out of place :(

I use "extreme metal" to characterise Bal-Sagoth, Saturnian, Keep of Kalessin, and the like. I don't need to explain that designation to you guys ;)

One can also use "black metal" for all these groups, and "epic metal" for Sagoth. "Philosophic metal" would be very descriptive, as these three groups continuously push the limits in all areas within music, lyrics, and visuals.

To me a proggie is one who probes the depth of all quality rock (and metal) ;)

Yeah, I'm still a BIG Arena fan, got Unquiet Sky at the top of my shopping list, next purchase ....

You otoh should listen to KoK's Epistemology, redefines metal *horns*

Overwhelming on first listens, but I think that you'l be receptive :)

Tip: There's piles of melody, and some stellar guitar-playing, and drums and bass .... ;)

And give Jagged Little Pill a few runs - much better than you think - I'm sure that Madame Butterfly can confirm this 8)

I looked it up on Spotify and it's there. I'll put the songs in my 'waiting list' and listen to them when I can find the time. :)

Their album Freedom from 2015 is stellar, highly varied progmetal and metalcore.

His American Recordings are spellbinding, sooo much expression !!!

Yep, he's a good singer. Although, he gets a lot of negative critisism for sounding like a copy of Jon Anderson. In my opinion he sounds nothing like him. His tone is very different. There's a brief moment where he reminds me a little bit of Jon Anderson. But just because he has a high voice and his name is also Jon, people start jumping to conclusions.

Anyway, check out what he did with Glass Hammer too. Some good stuff.

He is not on "The Inconsolable Secret"... Try "If", "Cor Cordium" and "Perilous". He also does some guest vocals on "Ode To Echo".

I know, Paxi, I would've kinda noticed that. I thought that I phrased it suchly ???

I probably won't be listening to these for a while. GH's style is a bit off for me. But I'll give TIS another run one of these days - just for the heck of it :)

Give Sagoth's The Power Cosmic another run soon. You (plural) are really missing something there. That's like not having seen Kubrick movies :(

Lamb of God -> Pantheon

PJ Harvey -> Pantheon

I saw LoG live at Copenhell. At the time they seemed too rough and unmelodic for my taste. So I forgot about'm. They've become more visible in Rockworld, and then there's all that hullabaloo about Randy Blythe in The Czech Republic. I read that they were very satisfied with VII: Sturm und Drang, so I decided to give it a run. It quite surprised me, it was far more classic and melodic than I had expected, still original and edgy.

PJ Harvey I of course had heard about - who hasn't? - and I had tested her a bit and quite liked what I heard. I then fell over Let England Shake for a small price and decided to give it a run ... and nicely surprised was I. Very original, biting, melodic, nicely instrumented, and the lady can sing - man!

Nothing really for me to comment in the plenum this time - and nobody comments my stuff - well, hardly - so if ya wanna know why I'm not active in the Room ;)

If you guys wanna keep the Room alive, ya gotta do better :-\

I added some groups to my Prog Pantheon lately. I'll admit that it now looks very much like a Hindu Pantheon ;D

Well, "The more one loves music, the more music one loves", and I'll add: The more one wants to honor the great musicians in the World *horns*

So here are the latest pantheon groups, with comments:

U2: Altho U2 have long ago ceased to be progressive, their Joshua Tree was a groundbreaking album, and also the surrounding albums "The Unforgettable Fire" and "Rattle and Hum" were, yes, an unforgettable fire ;)

Darkology: Michael Harris and Kelly Sundown Carpenter, their Fated to Burn is formidable, sounds a bit like Outworld I, and again Kelly has written some remarkable lyrics, and he delivers them stunningly. Also Michaels bro Brian Harris on drums, and Mike Neal on bass, excellent musicians.

Zierler: I actually haven't heard their debut album ESC yet - the cd is slow in getting out on the market - but I've read about Finn Zierler's work with it, and seen the members list - Finn Zierler, Kelly Sundown, Bobby Jarzombek, Per Nilsson, Truls Haugen - and that's enough for me to know that it's pantheon. Finn Zierler was the mastermind of Beyond Twilight, also pantheon with me, and Kelly sang on BT's studio album Section X, my fave BT album. So I expect to hear some of that on ESC.

Venom: I regard them as the pioneers of Black Metal, at the time relentless and true artists. Their second album is even called "Black Metal", first time used for an album or band. What I also like about them is that they didn't burn churches and other idiotic stuff, in fact they never had any major tiff with the law - which is actually surprising considering their attitudes at the time.

Ulver: Started with Black Metal, but has become so much more, one of the most wide-ranging and original bands around.

Wolves in the Throne Room: Their latest album, the instrumental Celestite, is absolutely magnificent, you think you're hearing the drama of Creation.

Any comments ?

Well , I love U2 up to Pop but not bothered with them much since. October/war/Unforgettable fire and Joshua Tree is an amazing run of albums.

Not a fan of Venom but I can understand the influence they had on the metal scene in general and extreme metal in particular. Then again I rarely , if at all , listen to metal at the moment so I am not the best person to comment  ???
