Why do I always have to spoonfeed you, Paco  ;D

Here are some of the best Beatles lyrics, maybe not great by today's standards, but progressive by those days' standards.

Let It Be

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be,
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.

For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.

Let it be, let it be. Yeah
There will be an answer, let it be.

And when the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me,
Shine until tomorrow, let it be.

I wake up to the sound of music,
Mother Mary comes to me,
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.

Revolution 1

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world.
You tell me that it's evolution,
Well, you know
We all want to change the world.
But when you talk about destruction,
Don't you know that you can count me out. In.
Don't you know it's going to be all right,
all right, all right.
You say you got a real solution
Well, you know
We'd all love to see the plan.
You ask me for a contribution,
Well, you know
We all do what we can.
If you want money for people with minds that hate,
All I can tell you is brother you have to wait.
Don't you know it's going to be all right,
all right, all right.
You say you'll change a constitution
Well, you know
We'd all love to change your head.
You tell me it's the institution,
Well, you know
You better free your mind instead.

Across the Universe

Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup,
They slither while they pass, they slip away across the universe.
Pools of sorrow waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind,
Possessing and caressing me.

Jai Guru De Va Om
Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes,
They call me on and on across the universe,
Thoughts meander like a restless wind
Inside a letter box they
Tumble blindly as they make their way
Across the universe

Jai Guru De Va Om
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life are ringing
Through my open ears inciting and inviting me.
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns,
And calls me on and on across the universe

When I'm Sixty-Four

When I get older losing my hair,
Many years from now.
Will you still be sending me a Valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine.

If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door.
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

You'll be older too,
And if you say the word,
I could stay with you.

I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone.
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday morning go for a ride.

Doing the garden, digging the weeds,
Who could ask for more.
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

Every summer we can rent a cottage,
In the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save

Grandchildren on your knee
Vera Chuck & Dave
Send me a postcard, drop me a line,
Stating point of view

Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore.

So you've come of age
And so you want to meet God
Sure you can

And this one properly belongs in this thread.

It's a Bupie Special, but this time more apt  ;D

Don't Ever Cry, Just Remember

Music:  B. Allman, C. Ingles, G. Wehrkamp
Lyrics & Vocal Melodies:  C.Cadden-James

I must have stood for hours
The mist of dawn still rising
Brushing from my face
Cold tears of finally knowing
The world that we had twisted
The years of strength and glory
Were wicked and obscene
And there we stood so proud
What legends we must be
Really something to behold Lord
So irresponsible
With the powers of creation
A princess crowned in jewels
Robed in the finest cloth
Dauntlessly invincible
So perfect so unreal

In one great moment judgements fallen
Babylon no longer there
Gone are her streets her giant towers
Disappeared into thin air
Don't ever cry just remember

It must have been my mood
I'm usually much stronger now
I know there's just one way
And this is how it has to be
There was poison in our thoughts
And there was hatred in our eyes
Suddenly something came
Something made it right
We purged our hearts and souls
And we saw through children's eyes
Not stifled by the pain
Not blinded by our
Human nature don't you see at all
The wisdom of our suffering
The lies behind our ways
The reasons for the end

From the moment I was raptured
Babylonia disappeared
I now return here a survivor
The rest have vanished to thin air
Don't ever cry just remember

The wind blows cold tonight
No lamplights from no windows
I am sure enough alone
And I am sure enough alive
So through eternity
The gift of light gets passed along
to those of us who saw
What the rest could never see
Born to a fallen world
Longing for a morning star
Held on high
For me
As this vision comes to close
The last footsteps ever wonder here
They echo in my mind
Never to return

All is done and slowly fading
Babylon she once stood there
I walked her streets I climbed her mountains
I disappear into thin air
Don't ever cry just remember

OK guys,

Since you are both religious persons in your own different way, I let you meditate on those lyrics :

Centuries of backward ways, have many left behind us
Who can count the good men gone away
The fruits of all our labors have left us as we started
We've come too far to end it in a day
It seems that everything we do is wrong
A one way trip to nowhere all along
Just look around and tell me what you see
Another stupid page of history

(Chorus)
No one together, No one is touching ground
Look to each other, Chaos is all around
Same situation, Nothing is really new
No one together, No one is me and you

Lo the horn of plenty is bursting at the seam
The harvest of the world will be our prize
We claim to know the secrets, the answers have been found
But how can one fool make another wise
'Cause nothing's better than it used to be
To live and die is still a mystery
We take away and we give nothing back
We just consume it all and still we lack

(Chorus)

Each day passed by so quickly now
You can feel it drawing much closer now
The signs are in the faces of the people in the street
The signs are in the sound I hear
The voices filled with hate and fear
You can feel it drawing near you now

The multitudes are searching, and wandering in vain
For what they seek cannot be found in men
The truth that lies before us now is plain for all to see
To grow without is not to grow within
For in the promise is a victory
To see the way that everything should be
To feel the joy that we were meant to know
We should have realized so long ago

We're all together, Harmony will abound
Look at each other, All that was lost is found
New situation if our direction's true
We're all together, Everyone is me and you

OK, I give up, Paco. You don't like lyrics by Beatles, A.C.T, and DT, you prefer Contagion without the lyrics, now what the f* lyrics do you like ?  Give us some examples, and tell us why. Then maybe we can creep into the weird dungeons of the Paco-mind  ::)

Quote from: Nicky007 on Mon, 2008-04-28, 19:25:22OK, I give up, Paco. You don't like lyrics by Beatles, A.C.T, and DT

Wrong.

I like lyrics by A.C.T, I just don't think that most of them are really that clever (or 'prog' if you want). Some of them are actually quite good. And 'Last Epic' is really good. A nice story with good metaphors. But a lot of the songs have really silly lyrics. Lyrics I could write. :D

Dream Theater's lyrics are artistically very good, really. I just don't know what to make of some of them. With this I mean that to me it's not certain whether I should think of it as christian lyrics or not (they are very vague about that). Sometimes about things that are very close to what I think of 'wrong', but on the other side, there are still a lot of brilliant and beautiful lyrics by Dream Theater which bring consolation or encouragement.

DT is an odd one in my book. ;) I love 'em and I hate 'em.

Quote from: Nicky007 on Mon, 2008-04-28, 19:25:22you prefer Contagion without the lyrics
Not at all!! I just said that when you rip out the lyrics from Contagion, that the remains would still be prog.

I don't know. I'll get to you later on this one.

Here's an example of a lyric I really like:

A wise man once said
A flower is only
A sexual organ
Beauty is cruelty
And evolution
A wise man once said
that everything could be explained with mathematics
He had denied
His feminine side
Now where is the wisdom in that?

I came just as fast as I could
Through the dirty air
Of your neighbourhood
Your name on a grain of rice
Hangin' around my neck
And a head like lead

This is the 21st century
I heard everything they said
The Universe demystified
Chemicals for God
This is the 21st century
I heard everything they said

A wise man once wrote
That love is only
An ancient instinct
For reproduction
Natural selection
A wise man once said
That everything could be explained
And it's all in the brain

We lay on a velvet rug
by the open fire
She blew air on my eyelids
I cried "What's it all about?"
As she kissed my hair
She said "There, there.."

"This is the 21st century
I heard everything you said
The universe demystified
Astronomy instead
This is the 21st century
Can't you get it through your head
This ain't the way it was meant to be
Magic isn't dead
Come to bed
Come to bed

And rest your heavy head my love.."
And slowly, from above,
She showed the answer's something that can't be written down

This is the 21st century
Flash to crash and burn
Nobody's gonna give you anything
For nothing in return
There's a man up in a mirrored building
And he just bought the world

Would you want
To have kids
Growing up
Into what's left of this?

She shook her head,
She said "Can't you see?
The world is you
The world is me."

'This Is The 21st Century' by Steve Hogarth, Marillion, 2001

Teunis

My favorite Toto song:

Toto - Wings Of Time

My faithful companion
I've lost my way once again
A prisoner of darkness
I let you down my friend

A heart left abandoned takes so long to heal its wounds
Your touch not forgotten
The end of the dream
It comes too soon
In this lonely room
Till I leave this world
Always know that

I will surrender my heart to the sky
Oh our love doesn't end here
It lives forever on the wings of time

The road that I travel
Don't know which way I should turn
Till I find the answer
Know that the fire within me will always burn

Angel of mercy, please
Why so much pain?
I cry for forgiveness
I'm the destitute man
Who still remains
It's so hard to explain
Till I leave this world
Always know that

I will surrender my heart to the sky
Oh our love doesn't end here
It lives forever on the wings of time

Sometimes I feel just like crying
I can't turn my back
All these years I've been trying
A vision of you keeps reappearing to me
You can't blame yourself
Just reach out your hand and believe

[Instrumental break]

We sail in dark waters
Lord give me some peace of mind
Temptation before me
Ahead lies the tower of truth that I must find
To you I will climb
Till I leave this cruel world far behind
Always know that

I will surrender my heart to the sky
Oh our love doesn't end here
It lives forever on the wings of time
[repeats 2x]
'I will surrender my heart to the sky
Oh, our love doesn't end here, it lives forever on the wings of time'

That is a fine lyric to present, PH. It's one of those that always worked for me. It is magnificent. And so's that Shadow Gallery lyric I pasted somewhere else, that you can find above, thanks to Nicky! ;)

PH

Yes Deenie. I really like this one.

For example this part:

Would you want to have kids growing up into what's left of this?
She shook her head, she said "Can't you see? The world is you, the world is me.

It makes me think that it's just the way you look at it. Indeed, the world is messed up pretty badly. And there's so much wrong things going on. You don't want your kids growing up into all this indeed. But the last sentence really struck me. WE can do something about it. Your kids don't grow up into that world as long as you'll make them grow up in your safe world. Kids need a safe place, and what's more safe than the love of your parents. Be there for them.

Man I love that part. It's so in contrast with whatever is on the radio.

-Paco

Deenfan

Ah, yes... thanks for pointing that out. I came to think of a conversation I once had with someone about it, a bit offhanded, but this one's reply really hit me:

We talked about my son, and what a fine kid he is (we would, wouldn't we?) I said, "I wonder at times if it's right to bring such a good kid into a world like this."

He replied: "This world needs good kids, more than ever."

Now, that... is deep.

Just one of the lyrics i really like:

Queensrýche - The Mission

Music and Lyrics by Chris DeGarmo

'In the wooden chair
Beside my window
I wear a face born in the falling rain
I talk to shadows from a lonely candle
Recite the phrases from the wall
I can't explain this Holy pain

Six days ago my life had taken a tumble
The orders came from high above they say
A need to use me once again they've got my number
Further the cause boy yes you know the game

I'll wait here for days longer
Till the sister comes to wash my sins away
She is the lady that can ease my sorrow
She brings the only friend
That helps me find my way

I search the past back to a time
When I was younger
A target for the new society
Picked to displace the leaders
Countering objectives
Of this new underground reality

Waiting for days longer
'til sister comes to wash my sins away
She is the lady that can ease my sorrow
My love for her
Will help me find my way

My mission saved the world
And I stood proud
My mission changed the world
It turned my life around

I look around my room is filled with candles
Each one a story but they end the same
I'll hide away in here the law will never find me
The walls will tell the story of my pain

Waiting for days longer
Till sister comes to wash my sins away
She is the lady who can ease my sorrow
She sets the pace for my delivery of pain

They'll say my mission saved the world
And I stood proud
My mission changed the world
The underground will rise and
Save this world we'll all stand proud
Our mission changed the world, we'll change the world
We'll all stand proud'

Here are some great lyrics by James LaBrie from the DT song Sacrificed Sons on Octavarium.

Sacrificed Sons

Walls are closing
Anxiously
Channel surfing
Frantically

Burning City
Smoke and fire
Planes we're certain
Faith inspired

No clues
A complete surprise
Who'll be
Coming home tonight

Heads all turning
Towards the sky
Towers crumble
Heroes die

Who would wish this on
On our people
And proclaim
That His will be done
Scriptures they heed have misled them
All praise their Sacrifice Sons

Teach them
What to think and feel
Your ways
So enlightening

Words they preach
I can't relate
If God's true Love
Are acts of Hate

God on High
Our mistakes
Will mankind be extinct?
There's no time to waste
Who serves the truth
For Heavens' sake

From Wikipedia - Sacrificed Sons:

"Sacrificed Sons is the seventh song from Dream Theater's album Octavarium. Written by vocalist James LaBrie (lyrics) and the entire band (music), the song is about the attacks on the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001.

The song starts with unintelligible chattering by foreigners, an effect which carried from the previous track, Never Enough. For the next minute or so, actual footage from the 9/11 newscasts are heard, which are broken up newscast by newscast by static noises, meant to represent the changing of channels; it is meant to emphasize the constant footage on every channel. The footage is then broken up by Jordan Rudess' haunting piano, in E minor. The lyrics by LaBrie describe the horror of the disaster, with lyrics including 'A complete surprise, who'll be coming home tonight' and 'Heads all turning towards the sky, towers crumble, heroes die'.

This song continues the trend of the Octavarium album; all eight songs are in a different minor key, starting at F minor. Sacrificed Sons is in E minor, and is the 7th song on the album. The first song, The Root of All Evil, is in F minor; the second song, The Answer Lies Within, is in G minor, and so on. The final song, Octavarium, is in F minor, to complete the octave."

To be honest, that lyric is good indeed, but not artistically clever or anything...

How about this one?

Roine Stolt - Dissonata

Smile - when you face suspect, corrupt, degenerate, merchants of melody
Smile - when you need respect, all you get is nails and poison from lizards tails
Smile - like the smart, sofisticate burnout sisters of hollow high harmonies
Smile - like the jester who knows what's expected, you smile in the face of your enemy
Fire - It's the sense of justice, the flame that light up the truth when time is done
Fire - at the mirrors edge, that reflect the conflict of a ruthless bussinesman
Fire - He can see a spark in the starless night of this cold and heartless town
Fire - So he can put it out, see them everywhere standing by to bring you down
Hope - when there's no place left in this wicked world for all of the decent men
Hope - You know all you get is a sad, sad feeling you're not going back again
Hope - You are miles ahead when you build a house and invite your enemy
Hope - For the living dead, in long time lost and dissolved democracy
Run for the power, run for the gold
Run from the fire, into the cold
Run for the diamonds, run from the dust
Run from the darkness into the dusk
Running for money, running for fame
Run from the devil, running insane
Run for the kingdom, run for the knife
Run for the living run for your life
Smile - I will rather be a King for a day than jerk for a lifetime, boy
Smile - You can count me out from silly games, cause I'm not your stupid toy
Smile - But you can not buy the experience of a lifetime in the sun
Smile - You're forever chained down the corridors where the blanks and restless run

Although I have no idea what's it about, I really like it.

Don't get me wrong! I like the song, and I really like the lyrics. I just don't think the lyrics are really "prog".

Roine's lyric is more "prog" in my opinion.

By the way, for people who can read Dutch: I've made an analysis of Marillion's This Is The 21st Century.
You can read it on my Hyves page...

It's not only an analysis, but also some kind of "my view on society".
In a song like that I can't ignore my own views. But H's view is somewhat the same, so it doesn't matter.

Hmm there's something i miss around here: Lyrics of an Arena song.  ;)

Here's one of my favourites:

Arena - Mea Culpa

"So here I am
Sitting on a pile of stones
Waiting for the rain to fall
To wash away the dust from my hands
So here I am
Sitting on a pile of broken bones
Waiting for the sun to shine
Just to find my way to another day

I hear you call to me
But there's nothing I can do
I hear you call to me
But I can't help you

So here I am
Nothing more to give the world
Hoping for another chance
As I try to make a stand against the tide

And now I walk in fire
I see the flames are grower stronger, dancing higher
And voices from the blue
Their screams will not be silenced, as I stand accused
I look for mercy in their eyes
But only find despising gazes

So here I am
Wasted and torn apart
Waiting for the end to come
Release me from the guilt I've had to bear
So here I am
Sitting on a pile of broken hearts
Waiting for the end to come
And take away the burden of my fear

I hear you call to me
But there's nothing I can do
I hear you call to me
But I can't help you - But I can't help you
So here I am, sitting on a pile of stones..."
