Now playing:
Muse - "Simulation Theory"

Funny how the whole 80's scene is coming back to me. Last month I discovered the 'Synthwave' genre. And now I look back at a lot of albums that I listen to and I realise that there have been a lot of bands/artists who incorporated 80's style aesthetics in their music. Especially Muse's latest album is very clearly a nod to the 80's and has some synthwave influences, which is obvious from the album cover.

And then there's also:
- Haken - "Affinity" (the artwork is clearly 80's and retro inspired. And there's a song called 1985, so yeah.)
- Quaschning & Schnauss - "Synthwaves" (very obvious reference in the title, and the music is pure 80's inspired. Both artists are in Tangerine Dream now.)
- Tangerine Dream - "Quantum Gate" (actually, most Synthwave artists are inspired by Tangerine Dream)
- Perfect Beings - "Vier" (some of the sounds on this album are very synthwave)
- Arjen Lucassen - "Lost In The New Real" (not really musically, but very clearly the artwork. Also the various concepts are influenced by things like Blade Runner etc.)
- Leprous - "Malina" (again, mostly the artwork, but there's certainly 80's vibes to be found)

Even Neal Morse does a bit of Synthwave (not in his music but in the visuals) in his promo video for Welcome To The World. And I recognised a synthwave styled logo during Nighttime Collectors in the "MorseFest 2017" bluray.

So there's a lot of interest for the 80's, even in our Progressive Rock world.

I never thought of it that way.
I will see them live for the first time next year but if I didn't know them already, I would be trying to sell the ticket.
The new album is a huge dissapointment to me.
Have listened to the album quite often yet the kwartje is nog niet gevallen so to speak. ;)

Just listened to:
Soniq Theater - "Brandenburg"
This guy releases a new album every year. Every once in a while I see his albums pop up on ProgArchives. The cover art of these albums are extremely lame, so I was never really interested. Besides, releasing so many albums without help from others, he must be either really gifted/inspired or he just doesn't care much for quality and goes for quantity instead.
Now that I've heard it, I must nuance my view. It's not bad. But I feel that he could have made a very nice album if he had some input from others, releasing maybe one album in three years.
Anyway, while he most probably will not end up in my endlist of 2019 (too soon to even think about that one anyway), I'll make sure to check him out again. Perhaps some of his previous stuff too.

Now listening to:
Joey Frevola - "Gone"
Hmm! This is pretty good actually. Makes me think of Neal Morse's music a bit, or Spock's Beard or something along those lines. After some research I find that Joey is guitar-bass-keys player and he's in the band KYROS (formerly known as Synaesthesia). I saw that band live as a support act for IQ in 2014 and was happily surprised then, but never invested much.
This album "Gone" is going on my playlist in Spotify. Let's see where this goes!

Marrow - "Look Outside"
An EP of 33 minutes. Instrumental Progressive Metal. Pretty good stuff if you like that kind of thing.
For those without Spotify, it's also on Bandcamp (it's a 'name your price' download): https://marrowofficial.bandcamp.com/album/look-outside

Also listened for a few minutes to:
Phil Keaggy, Tony Levin, Jerry Marotta - "The Bucket List" on Spotify as well.
Nice!

Listening to the single I Go Deeper by Tim Bowness (you can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptY7m76xAps)
His previous album "Lost In The Ghost Light" (2017) really surprised me, so I'm really looking forward to the release of "Flowers At The Scene".

The anticipation ;). Friday the new album 'The Great Adventure' will be released. What I've read about it is that it may top TSOAD. Curious if that is possible  :).
