Title: Biggest loss to music
Post by: Moonloop on Tue, 2005-03-15, 13:03:48
Hendrix - Guitar god, never been equalled (not even by Blackmore)
Lennon - Classic songwriter although some of his solo stuff was indulgent noodling
Lynott - Rocker. Poet. Amazingly talented guy, very sad loss.
Mercury - Quite possibly the greatest frontman ever
Bonham - His death caused the demise of one of the greatest bands ever

Tricky choice - so much so I haven't decided myself yet  ;)

I've gone for John Bonham (VERY close call). Mainly because Zeppelin were a relatively young band and had a lot of time ahead of them  :(

Guitarists, Singers and Drummers eh!  Can anyone think of any late great bass or keyboard players?

Regarding the choice given I'd have to go for Freddie.  I've never been a Hendrix fan, Lennon (in my opinion) is massively over-rated and Phil Lynott lost my interest when Thin Lizzy brought out that crap single 'Whiskey In The Jar'.  I'd tend to agree however that Bonham is a sad loss!

Well, Phil Lynott was a Bassist  ;) . Couldn't think of any keyboardists though  :) .

Blimey, that's a hell of a big chunk of Lizzy's career to dismiss  ;)

True .... but with so much music about you have to base your likes and dislikes on something.  I'm willing to be shown the error of my ways if you have a good recommendation - till then the feeling stands!  :)

I voted for Freddie, cos he was such an extraordinary entertainer and singer. Too bad I've never been to a Queen concert while he was alive... :(

Nope. I'm happy for you to hold on to your opinion, it wasn't a criticism, just surprised at the point in the career that's all  ;) .  If you'd cited "Trouble Boys" for example, then I wouldn't have commented  ;D

I'd love to point out a couple of less obvious killer "must have" tracks from their latter period but I can't really think of any  :-[ . Ho hum....

I gave my voice for John Lennon. The world has lost one half of the greatest song-writing team(L/M) and one quarter ot the most popular group ever. John got his message across with music bringing joy to many millions. It was a tragic loss that never be replaced.

John Lennon. Ok, it was already 10 years after the Beatles, but he was working on a new album and could not finish it.

Of course....I only have 3 of the Doors albums though :

1. The Doors
2. LA Woman
3. Morrison Hotel

All great albums  ;D

I voted for Lennon, partly because his death I find the most senseless. The others died as a consequence of their lifestyle, from what I know. Dying in a freak rollercoaster accident after enjoying the ride so far is one thing. Dying from having the cart smashing into your head as you walk past the amusement park is another altogether...

Lennon for me. great songwriter, and a man who told it like it was.
All of the above are great losses though.

You're right, Constable Hogweed. Not to mention that John Lennon's life was taken by sensitive killer in New York. A musician who spends his great talent preaching against violence and hate was shot dead. Paul McCartney said such words: "He is to be missed by the whole world." And I'm still crying. :'(

All of the above and many more.  I voted for Lennon in the end, after much ponderance.

I would also add Frank Zappa to that list, such a great innovator, and George Harrison also deserves a mention.

Too many artistic and talented souls cut off in their prime, perhaps we'd better not dwell too much on this subject.

I voted for Freddy Mercury. Last week I played the DVD 'Live at the Wembley stadium'. Unique, his intervention with the audience.

Would like to add Jeff Porcaro, the drummer of Toto who died in the early 90's.

I put Freddie Mercury, as  was brought up on Queen.  As well as Dire Straits, Status Quo, various 80's music.

But mostly Queen.

;D

Must admit I'm going through a bit of a Quo renaissance with all the recent remasters  ;D

"Love Over Gold" is one of the truely great albums of all time too (IMHO, naturally)  ;)

'Love Over Gold' is a great album...

"Industrial Disease" is a fantastic track.  Shame it wasn't on the live 'Alchemy' album though!  It was played though because you can hear the end of it on one of the tracks.

"Telegraph Road" is also excellent!  The guitar solo is pretty damn good too! ;D

I voted Freddy Mercury, that was the last one which I remembered that died, and made a whole band stop playing. But I would also mention Kurdt Kobain, a great singer with a unique style.
Yes Jimmy Hendrix was also a great guitar player, but I had to choose, makes it difficult, but he died so many years ago, that it's like Rembrand who died, so that made me choos for Freddy

Freddie, a unique person and voice.
No doubt he was! My no 1 vocalist of all times. Irreplacable. I read somewhere that a UK rock radiostation recently made a poll for best vocalist, bassist, guitarist and so on...and  Freddie was second after Robert Plant (In fact most of them were British ;D)

Who is Robert Plant? Never heard of the guy, for such a good singer he must have been more famous. Good vocalists what to think of the Arenasingers, Fish, Steve Hogarth. I think it's just a question of taste at that level, I'd rather hear Rob Sowden or Steve Hogarth than Freddie, I even always was more font of Bryan Mays voice than Freddies. But Yes Bryan May had a more simple voice than Freddie.

No kiddin' you dont know Robert? ;) Oh... no worry, maybe that's because Led Zeppelin isnt (wasnt) such a progressive band ;D I love May maybe not for his vocal but his voice fit very well in these famous multi-leyer Queen choirs, together with Rog and Fred. In fact most of my fav Q. songs were written by Brian (like Who wants to live forever) However, he did quite good job on his solo albums, also vocally!

I find this kind of topic difficult............. who is to say that the dearly departed had not already played/written/recorded their finest work, that they would not have 'bummed' out had they lived..........however unlieky this might sound!

i voted for John Lennon......... because his death touched me more than the others.......
but I kinda believe in destiny, and the guys had given us their masterpieces before their untimely deaths.

Yes I know Led Zeppelin, who doesn't, I never knew that Robert Plant was the singer of that band. I also have a Led Zeppelin CD, but I never looked at who the bandmembers are. Mostly I'm not so interested in bandmembers, unless they went solo, than I recognize them, sorry.
