I've been playing my latest purchases from Kingcrow and Leprous a lot. Great stuff *horns*, Kingcrow still in the lead ;).

np: Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls

16 years old today, one of my favourites by them, the other one is 'The Great Escape'.

Such a terrific album.
I really don't mind the electronics in his music.

I really need to try it again. The album was hyped a lot last year and many people said it was much better than "The Future Bites", but to me it sounded much alike.
But the 1 year anniversary for "The Harmony Codex" is coming up, so I might as well listen again and try to enjoy it for what it is.

Since last week I have been listening to these albums:

Yes - "Tales From Topographic Oceans"
Yes - "90125"
Two very different albums and I love both of them for different reasons. "90125" might be one of the catchiest albums they've made. And "Tales..." is one of their most difficult albums. But I think the first two tracks (which is half of the album) is pretty good stuff!

Haken - "Virus"
I think I like "Vector" a bit more, but this album is also fantastic! I wish I knew what the whole story is about.

Pure Reason Revolution - "Coming Up To Consciousness"
Pretty nice stuff. I was much into "The Dark Third" back when it was released in 2006/2007 and I was disappointed with the following two albums. Then they went into hiatus. After their return I was not really interested so I missed their fourth and fifth album completely. This is now already their sixth album (their third after their hiatus) and now I am intrigued. Anyone here who is a fan of the band and (all) their output? What are their fourth and fifth albums like?

David Gilmour - "Luck And Strange"
Wow! Not bad at all! David Gilmour said this is the best he has done after "The Dark Side Of The Moon". I don't agree, because I think "Wish You Were Here", "Animals" and "The Wall" are all much and much better than this, but still... this might be his best solo album. At least better than "On An Island" and "Rattle That Lock". I am not that well known with his earlier solo albums.

The Flower Kings - "Look At You Now"
Still a pretty album after a year. What? It's been a year already? Where is the new Flower Kings album then? :D

Sieges Even - "Paramount"
I was late to the party, because I discovered Sieges Even after Subsignal, but this album is really good.

That's great to hear! I have to admit that I haven't tried it again after my initial listening. Now that I know that you played it 6 times in a row, makes me eager to listen again.

Today I was listening to:

Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks - "True"
Well, yes (ha!), interesting for sure. But not earth shakingly good. It has the same 'problem' as the Stolt/Anderson release a few years back: too much Anderson. Sacrilege, I know. In Yes it never occured much to me, but in this release and the Stolt/Anderson release it stands out to me: he sings a lot of nonsense and he sings a lot.

MEER - "Wheels Within Wheels"
Actually pretty good! I really liked their previous album "Playing House". This one seems to be a bit more proggy, or at least more 'busy'. Whether that's a good thing, I have to find out.

About Leprous - Melodies Of Atonement
Quote from: Teunis on Sat, 2024-08-31, 19:47:53I'm playing it for the first time right now and so far I get the same feeling. But I've read it's a grower. So there's hope ;). I also find 'Aphelion' less interesting, quite boring.

And also played my other purchase 'Kingcrow - Hopium'. Top-3 material for my yearlist, I'm sure!

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I wasn't familiar with Kingcrow before, but it seems this new release was highly anticipated by review sites.
I was lucky to see them live together with Blind Ego just before Covid started. Frankly speaking I came for Blind Ego, but anticipated on the double headliner by playing their album 'The Persistence' often on Spotify. They really convinced me live and I bought the album that evening.

I ordered the two albums mentioned and can pick them up at my record store on Monday. 'Hopium' is great but I do recommend 'The Persistence' as well!

And good to see you back! It was very lonely here ;).

Some of the albums that I listened to lately:

Caligula's Horse - "Charcoal Grace"
To me, this album is nearly perfect, much like their previous release, "Rise Radiant," which I actually rate a bit higher. It's a wonderful example of melodic progressive metal, featuring excellent guitar riffs and a pitch-perfect clean vocalist. For me, these guys are at the forefront of progressive metal today, alongside Haken and Leprous, who share a similar style.

Ritual - "The Story Of Mr. Bogd, Part 1"
I'm thrilled to see this band return after so many years (17 years since their last album, "The Hemulic Voluntary Band"!) This new album is still growing on me, but I'm confident it will. And it's just part 1 of the complete package! In anticipation of its release, I also discovered that their self-titled debut is excellent as well!

Leprous - "Melodies Of Atonement"
It's only been a day since the release, but I'm feeling a bit underwhelmed. The hype was probably too much. In my opinion, the band had an impressive streak with their releases of "Coal," "The Congregation," "Malina," and "Pitfalls." However, "Aphelion" didn't have any truly memorable moments for me, and "Melodies of Atonement" seems to continue in that same vein. Of course I will listen more to it, so time will tell.

Kingcrow - "Hopium"
I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I wasn't familiar with Kingcrow before, but it seems this new release was highly anticipated by review sites. Now I can see (or rather, hear) why. It reminds me of Porcupine Tree, Leprous, Anathema, and Riverside. Really good stuff. I'll definitely be listening again!

I've also been obsessively listening to Opeth's "Blackwater Park," "Damnation," and "Ghost Reveries" on repeat, gearing up for the new album! And guess what? MIKAEL IS GRUNTING AGAIN! I'm freaking out! I can't believe it! This is the best news ever!!!!1!! :o :o :o
...
Or something like that.
Well anyway, I was not expecting him to go back to the dark side and I am definitely intrigued to see where this new album is going.
