Title: Clive's codes
Post by: erik on Fri, 2005-08-12, 23:37:10
Let's have a go at this, Clive's known to put these little codes and references in his lyrics - what do you make of this one in Skin Game:

I prefer to face my days alone!

Kneeling down before I sleep
Never said a prayer that I believed
One day you'll understand
Why have I become this way?
Maybe it's another quirk of fate
Yielding to my DNA

Try to live on my own
Reborn once more as a whisper on the telephone
Unafraid of it all
Every thought, every dream, I will call! I will call!
Now I'm living alone
And all I am is a whisper on the telephone
Making sense of it all
Every thought, every dream, I will call! I will call!

I know my true name... It's probably the album's protagonist Noah that speaks here, but what is his "true name" then? Any thoughts or ideas?

Actually the 'I' is a coincidence..... it's just 'know my true name'..... amny of these codes reach outside of the songs or album they may be a part of.
That's all I can say at the moment.... :) ;)

Actually, Earthsea has been a favourite of mine for years.
It has probably influenced more than one set of lyrics.... :)

Digging into Earthsea now, now I know where the 'know my true name' derives from  ::)

I found a couple more codes!!

Pepper's Ghost
Bedlam Fayre

Over there an angry god
Violent brow and negligence
Making waves that can't be stopped
Unafraid of consequence

Chosen faith's a lottery
Heaven sent down forgeries
Miracles and travesties
Irreligion sows that seed

Staring through the Judas Hole
See what I can see?
Every covenant of souls
Drum roll payments paid to me..

Much missed. Clive missed something? ;D

Pepper's Ghost
Smoke & Mirrors

Tell me who you are
To treat me like a fool, can't you be
Honest from the start
Explain these tainted rules

Calm me down
A siren's crown
Graceful sounds
Ease me round

The Cage, a tribute to the fanclub! Great!!

Pepper's Ghost
The Eyes Of Lara Moon

It's hard to fight
When you're strugling for breath
And it's hard to smile
Noble in the face of death
There's no defence
To quell a greater force of will
One desperate flight
But needlessly their blood is spilled

Endure the bleakest days
Light the visions crowding in
Identify the blame
Expose the guilty and the sinners
Vocation holds us here
Even to the end of days
There's no inaction
That will stem the tide of fear

I want to believe. Clive's personal struggling?

Hmm... maybe Clive missed something in life, so he wants to believe. He's seeking for something to believe in?

Please Clive, could you help us out? ???

I like these codes, and I'm sure there must be some more...
I thought I read something in The Shattered Room too... something like 'I am' and then something with SAST... so... well...
'I am sassy'? :P ::)

Each message has it's own meaning... they aren't connected particularly.
You need to go back a line or two for the 'much missed'... that should help...;)

The idea of such messages is... enrapturing, for want of a better word. But I have to ask: Have you felt that the wish for such a code, which of course sets the preset to what letter each line can start with, may come in conflict with the best possible lyrics / ideas you could put down on paper? You get my meaning? Have you tried to put a code in, but given it up, 'cause the lyrics that came to you and felt like the right thing just couldn't be adjusted to the required first letter?

I'm not sure where you are referring to.

Magic eye thingies: could be either:
- Clive's eyes
- Ian's eyes

So? What's wrong with it?

What Clive is doing:

1. You're reffering to exorsism?
2. Or the way he holds his hand like that? ("Hail Hitler" or something?? ??? )

1. It is just a cover and it's a story which is said to be in the Victorian Age.
2. That's really far-fetched (or how ever you spell it like that)

Besides, we're not in the US states.
There are other countries as well, you know.

I think Smegal mean "a trick of the eye" thingy. Like a picture where you see a man, and when you turn it around you see a woman. Or that picture where you can see an ugly old lady or a young beautiful lady, just by looking at it differently. (I can't find the picture >:()

Still haven't found any "eye tricks" on Pepper's Ghost yet.

I should point out that a 'Magic Eye' picture has to be made out of a continuously repeating pattern in order for the human eyes to cross onto it effectively... ;)

Books by Ursula K. LeGuin.

Recently read her Earthsea Quartet.  Hoggie was telling me about this thread a while back while I was reading it and I got all excited about it!  Strange coincidence because it was from a recommendation on the reading thread of this site that I decided to read the book in the first place.

There was a wierd surrealist element in it for me too, because the hero's name is Ged I couldn't help imagining Geddy Lee from Rush as that wizard!!  :D

Awesome books anyway, they get inside your head and no doubt this was why Clive put these hidden messages in his lyrics.

So you would recomend these books to the rest of us then? Given that I really like Terry Brooks, Stephen Donaldson, Stephen King, Terry Pratchett The Dragonlance Series, How does it Compare? I know nothing about the Earthsea Quartet and have done no research so the big question is.... Do I part with a few quid for these?

Thanks a lot, guys, for this thread. It's the most exciting one of all. I just looked it up properly. Really makes my think - grind, grind, grind. What a surprise, Clive and the guys go even deeper than I had worked out by myself, and that already was a fair bit.

Pepper's Ghost is a real Magical Mystery Tour, and Arena the true successors to The Beatles - well, ok, also to Floyd.

Looking forward to more of this.

The Fab Four had a LOT more depth than you think (obviously). If you check out Arena that much, you gotta do it with Beatles too. Maybe Paul is f***** around in bimboland today, but in those days Paul, John, George and Ringo cut the mustard.

The young lady is looking over her left shoulder.
The old lady's  eye, is the young lady's ear.
The top of the old lady's nose is the cheekbone of the young lady.
The nostril from the old lady, is the jawline of the young lady.
The mouth of the old lady, is the collar of the young lady.

Hi Nicky,
I think the colours help, but not much... I know the picture both in b/w and colour and can see both women in each picture, so I don't think colour is essential. It's about knowing how to look at it I guess...

My fiancée fleshed out the features of the young lady, and I can identify her now. However, I don't consider it a very good dual pic, I've seen better.

It would be great to get some more tips for understanding Pepper's Ghost better - it's a fantastic album - but please, some with substance, so that we're not just dragged around in the arena.

Yeah, that's the thing. I find these much more ingenious than the hag/bimbo jive. I don't get what makes the latter so hot among shrinks and shrinkoids.

It would be fun if Arena could do something like that on their next album, if ........ But how do you surpass Contagion and Pepper's Ghost? Seems impossible ......... but then again, it has to be tried!

It's funny, I like all these side projects: Nolan and Wakeman, Kino, Pendragon, Frost*, and so on and so forth, but come on, Arena are simply such a special treat, light years above all these other outfits. I'm sorry to say it, but I don't understand why the guys are messing around in all these other places, when they've tasted TRUE GENIUS.

Can anyone explain this? "Clive's codes" actually wouldn't be out of place for such a discussion. Hey, Clive, listen now!

Bluepony, a lot of stuff here refers to earlier discussions. When you have the time, you should go back and browse through all the dusty shelves of the Room, there are lots of treasures to be found. I do that ever so often, and I always find gems, e.g. recently Maddox' thoughts leading to his choice of name. Roomies are lively and adventurous people, you'll realise that when you go a'browsin.  ;)

Yeah, I know that women have less capacity for intellectual activities...
Not necessarily, but like Clive (or was it Nick?) said on one of the DVDs, memory is like a shelf and if you put something on the one end, something else might fall off the other end of the shelf. Sometimes I think I have an extremely small memory shelf!

By the way, we have a thread on ladies and prog, would be interesting to have your take on that matter.
Alright, I'll have a look at it - if I can remember to do so, that is...  ;)

Smegal, you have kept us in the dark for too long now! Now is the time to tell us what you see on the cover of Pepper's Ghost!
