Title: This years great prog albums
Post by: Moonloop on Tue, 2005-04-26, 09:53:46
Arena - Pepper's Ghost
Spock's Beard - Octane
Kino - Picture
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing

4 months and 4 albums

Soon be in month 5 so what's next  ???

Can only think of the forthcoming "Pineapple Thief" & "Mostly Autumn" ones (which are both going to be sooo good  ;D )

Any others - it has been a bit lacking in quality new prog releases.

Unlike the other posters here I seem to lack the gift of seeing into the future.  Must be nice to know an album is great before it's even released but I regret that I personally cannot tell if an album is any good or not until I actually hear it!  If it were otherwise I could probably save a lot of money!  :)

The gift is called "Faith"  ;D

Occasionally it lets you down, but only occasionally  ;)

More faith:

In 2007, one of the top three (at least!) contenders for best prog album of the year, will be Arena's... wait, I think I can see something... No, I can't make it out... So, the title will have to wait, but I think Clive's gonna have to break his own "No to double albums" rule. -Only, he'll find a clever workaround! (DVD audio, Two releases -Ayreon style or Gary Hughes style, maybe... ??)

But I can clearly tell it's gonna be a great album!

If it's Ayreon: Universal Migrator style, then in 2006 the first album will appear and in 2007 the double will be complete with the second album. But I think that's not a Arena thing to do, a double album such as ayreon's.

Maybe the harm is done already, if Clive reads this. I prophecy that this idea will haunt him day and night, until he eventually surrender to the urge... ;D

That would of course be great. Not that it was anything wrong with the predecessor. :)

I'm looking for some feedback on PORCUPINE TREE's 'Deadwing' album.

Good? Bad? Indifferent?

I got 'In Absentia' when that came out and I reaaly liked it.  Is 'Deadwing' much different?

Its very good Matt.  You will not be disappointed.  If you liked In Absentia you will like this one.  A bit different but just as good in those different ways.  Enjoy.

I really LOVE "Deadwing". It's got all an album needs, hard and soft and fast and slow and all that.

A colleague of mine took me to a concert a few weeks ago. I had heard of PT, but wasn't very fond of it, but again hadn't heard Deadwing yet. The concert was astonishing, best sound I had heard up to then, and prolly the greatest drummer I've ever seen live. Just look at that drum set, and what an amzing double bass work... The album itself actually isn't as good sound-wise as they were live, but it's in my top 5 atm, anymways.

Personally, I think it's better although it does take longer to get into. Some elements of it are more proggy and some are heavier but yet on the whole it seems to flow better than IA and there are no weak spots or filler material. If you have the set-up, I'd recommend the DVD-A which came out last week and which has 3 bonus tracks  ;D

Personally, I think In Absentia was quite good, but I tend to think Deadwing is a bit slow and less melodic.
Melodic in the sense of "song you start to hum".....
I think I prefer Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream for that reason....

That's what I thought initially, it does take a while for the melodies to sink in as it's quite a complex album. Give it time  :)
