Title: Genesis - favorite album + track
Post by: pedanticmongrel on Sat, 2008-12-06, 03:56:23
it would be such a tough choice, I'd have to say "Wind and Wuthering" for Album and "Supper's Ready" for track.

Without any doubt, i will choose Foxtrot and Selling England as my favorite genesis album. Foxtrot for supper's ready and Selling england for Firth of fifth . As a conclusion, i love all genesis album from Trespass till Wind and wuthering. But, i have no interest at all for the others.  :D

Well, my favourite Genesis album is The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.
My favourite track however...

That's a bit harder to choose.
Great songs like Fifth Of Firth, The Cinema Show, Supper's Ready, The Knife...

Difficult... :-\

*holds hand before eyes and drops his finger on the list:

The Cinema Show.  :D

Yep another one of those impossible questions

I would go for Supper's ready and Genesis 1970 - 1975 Disc 5 aka Foxtrot.

Can we gather from this that Genesis is your favourite band?

Phew... difficult...

Genesis is one of my favourite bands, possibly the first one on the list for me.
For best album it would be...
- Selling England By The Pound
or
- A Trick Of The Tail

Best song...
- The Cinema Show

Still, this is sooo difficult...

Well, a lot of people are fan of the early stages and are disgusted by the Phil Collins albums/tracks.

Teunis, Home By The Sea Part I & II is an excellent choice!

But I think Genesis (the album) along with Invisible Touch (the album) is the two worst albums, with some excellent tracks on it. ;)

They should have made an album like this:

Mama
Home By The Sea
Second Home By The Sea
Tonight Tonight Tonight
Domino
The Brazilian

That would be really cool! 8)

My fave Genesis album is Foxtrot and fave track, Suppers ready. I dont like any of the Phil Collins stuff except Ripples from Trick of the Tail.
My bloke used to play and sing it to me so its a little bitter/sweet at the moment but still a lovely song. I dunno if anyone ever saw that video clip of John Mitchell on his boat and the music played was Ripples. Thats the first time i heard it properly a few years ago!

While I know every single song by Floyd well on the studio albums from Piper to Final Cut (not the film soundtracks tho), I'm not at all that strong with the Genesis songs.

So I can't say more than that I'm fond of all albums from Foxtrot to Duke, and then with the following albums my appreciation falls album by album. Calling All Stations hasnt gripped me at all, even tho I like Ray Wilson's singing in other mixes.

Incidentally, I'v been wondering for a long time why there's so much talk about Genesis in the Room and hardly any about Floyd. I mean, they're both in the same top league, and among the populace, Floyd is a bigger name.

Tell me, guys, why do you find Genesis more interesting than Floyd  ???

Nicky,
I think it's because of the keyboards.
David Gilmour is a very good guitarist! And Pink Floyd is mainly written from a guitar-point-of-view, while Genesis relies heavily on the keyboards.
Pink Floyd is more spheric and laid back, with spacey sounds, etc. Genesis is more symphonic and (I think) they make more use of the drums. Phil Collins was/is(?) an amazing drummer and in Genesis there were some pretty fast and amazing drum parts!

I agree with you Sobat, though i think Hackett's guitar also give significance touch for Genesis music. After there were three (worse or even worst moment for such a legendary prog band), they lost their magical stuff IMHO. While, PF was very excellent for the guitar they played. So, Mr. Gilmour can be described as the main person.
However, Yes is very complete. All of the member give fairly contribution. The battle of Guitar vs Keyboard is very terrific.

If I'd say that I dislike Yes, would that be concidered off-topic? If so, I won't say that. ;D

However I do like Genesis (and Pink Floyd as well). Favourite tracks would be 'Afterglow' and 'Los Endos'. Please note there's a lot of Genesis-stuff that I don't know (yet) so if my favourites seem a bit strange, it's because of this big hole in my (Genesis) collection.

OK Paco i'll try it.
"Different feel" means this term : not same (stand in different level).
My impression for Yes is quite different with both Genesis or Pink Floyd.
In other case, i will give 5.0 for Yes, and 4.5 for Genesis and Pink Floyd.

I can hear that on And Then There Were Three, they were struggling a lot with which way to go. There are (in my opinion) not really strong tracks on there.
The sound is somewhat in between Wind & Wuthering and well... yeah what exactly?
Duke on the other hand, is COMPLETELY different from Wind & Wuthering, but still it sounds soooo fresh! It STILL sounds fresh! ;)
They took a big step and obviously you need a lot of courage to do that.
I'm not saying I like Duke better than Wind & Wuthering, but I do prefer it over And Then There Were Three.

:D Since you're asking our attention:
Personally, I think Calling All Stations is a VERY beautiful album. Nice pop songs and some nice pop/rock. I really like Ray Wilson's voice!
It's Genesis' fifth era. And I would have liked to see where they were going to.
Era 1: Peter Gabriel years. [Raw "True" Progressive Rock]
Era 2: A Trick Of The Tail, Wind & Wuthering [Dreamy Progressive Rock]
Era 3: And Then There Were Three, Duke, Abacab [Pop influenced Prog]
Era 4: Genesis, Invisible Touch, We Can't Dance [Pop]
Era 5: Calling All Stations [Pop/Rock]

I do miss Steve Hackett on Three - well, which Genesis fan wouldnt - but I also do find a lot of great music on it. I'm having a much harder time with the post-Abacab albums.

One of the big big mistakes Genesis made was to let Steve Rutherford do the guitar parts.

That's probably the reason why Genesis gradually lost the ethereal part of their music after W&W, and rhythms took over more and more; and then they lost it altogether  :'(

Not entirely.
Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks once admitted that it was Phil Collins who said that there were other ways to be more successful.
On ...And Then There Were Three they clearly were still searching to the right sound but with every album they made ever since the pieces of the big success-puzzle came falling in the right place.
Not that Genesis became money-wolves (don't know the exact English saying for that) but it did make them less sympho/proggier than before.

Though it's undeniably true that it was good for their wallets.

I cannot answer the album question definitively, because they all have a piece of magic in them.  If I had to tell you my favorite albums they would be:-  Wind and Wuthering, ...And then there were three, Genesis, and Invisible Touch.

As for favorite track, that would be "Domino".

I'd probably get some stick for that little selection, but I don't care. ;D

Hi folks.  I've  been out of touch for a while, but since this topic is near and dear to my heart, I'll take this opportunity to chime in again.
Genesis in their prime (or primes?) is perhaps my favorite band ever, so picking favorites is tough. Based on what I've been most into lately, I'll say Foxtrot for album and Watcher of the Skies for song, but you could name several others for each, and I'd have a hard time disagreeing with you.

Re: Floyd and Yes -- I like both quite a lot, especially Floyd, but I'd pick Genesis over either one.  As someone noted, I think the keyboards in Genesis gives them more of the kind of complexity I tend to enjoy (as compared to PF being more guitar-based, and for me, sparser sounding).  Yes has plenty of keyboard virtuosity, but I prefer both the vocals and lyrics of Genesis (plus Steve Hackett is Steve Hackett).  That said, I own albums by both PF and Yes and am not sorry I do!

Aaah, irresistible topic! :P

Favourite track: Firth Of Fifth

Favourite album: Selling England By The Pound. VERY closely followed by A Trick Of The Tail and Wind And Wuthering though. My problem with Selling England is The Battle Of Epping Forest; too long and winding for me, disrupts the flow and mood of the album. Therefore, I put Trick and Wuthering on more often.

For me Genesis certainly didn't end there. I like and have all their albums up to and including Calling All Stations. We Can't Dance was my first Genesis album, wasn't really into prog yet back then, still like it a lot. This was followed by a tape with Seconds Out an uncle of mine gave me and took me into their back catalogue.

Agree with Nicky, I'm very fond of Duke and Abacab, two much underrated albums. The latter especially has such a bold new sound yet is definitely Genesis. On And Then There Were Three they were struggling a bit and it's a bit bland somehow. Doesn't really grab me.

The real bummer in their catalogue is the eponymous album though. It's telling that Mike Rutherford always says his favourite album is Side A of said album... That's great stuff, but the rest is B side material indeed! ;) I've also pondered like Paco about a fictive big Genesis 80s album: a combination of Genesis and Invisible Touch. Would include a bit more than Paco, Land Of Confusion should certainly be on it and That's All as well.  Still, this period of Genesis sounds much more dated than their previous stuff that has aged much better. Paco, you dubbed this era just "pop" but I think prog-influenced pop is more apt!

As for Floyd and Yes, really like them too and more or less have all their albums, but they don't hold the same special place for me as Genesis does.

But despite personal preferences, Erik, wouldnt you agree with me that Floyd have had a bigger impact on the rock community in total, in fact almost as big as Beatles ?

Thanks for your detailed account of the Genesis catalog. Very useful to me  :)

Yep, agree with you that Floyd have had a bigger/wider impact than Genesis. Almost as big as the Beatles might be stretching it a bit far, but certainly they have been a major force.

And you're welcome; couldn't resist to put my penny in, since it's a topic I'm passionate about ;)

But on the prog community?

Good question, Paxi. I think that Floyd is also bigger there, but I'm on far more shaky ground with this. Anyone else has an opinion bout it ?

I think on the prog side, Genesis, Yes and definitely King Crimson had the biggest impact.
That's my opinion about it. ;D

But if we take big prog groups like Tool, PT, Anathema, Arena, and Riverside, it's definitely Floyd. JM is clearly a Gilmour devotee.

So it's not that simple.

There are a lot of bands you can mention when it comes to influences:

King Crimson, Pink Floyd (though more psychedelic), Yes, Gentle Giant, Rush, Camel, Genesis, Jethro Tull.

In the end most of the people mentions PF, Genesis or Yes as the biggest influence but they are all pretty important if you ask me.
Without any of these bands, prog as we know it would be entirely different.

And there we go again: I always said that it was Symphonic Rock when i was younger. Simply because the progressive music wasn't really invented yet.
That's a term that people created after the years.

What's the difference between symphonic rock and progressive rock anyway? Or are you saying that it's basically the same? I know that progressive rock isn't exactly what you call fashionable, but symphonic rock sounds so dull!

Symphonic Rock is Rock like a symphony. Where Progressive Rock is just progressing.

Symphonic Rock was of course very progressive. But Progressive Rock doesn't have to be symphonic.

Ahh yes... wonderful!

As someone noted, I think the keyboards in Genesis gives them more of the kind of complexity I tend to enjoy (as compared to PF being more guitar-based, and for me, sparser sounding).

I think that Tony Banks more than anyone else determined the sound of Genesis, at least up to Abacab, when it changed more in Phil's and Mike's disco-radio direction (I wont go as far as saying "pop", that would be disrespectful towards such a great group).

Whadaya guys think ?

Agreed Nicky, Tony Banks is the man! *horns*
Although I do think he is just as much responsible for the change in direction/sound, Calling All Stations isn't miles away from We Can't Dance and in much of his solo work he also goes "pop" (if it looks like "pop", smells like "pop" and sounds like "pop", we can say "pop"! ;) High-quality, prog influenced pop, but pop nonetheless). Stupid word by the way if you type and read it so many times in a row.

Especially the abbreviation: PIP = Prog Influenced Pop.

Have we found a new label?  :D

Good question, he kept doing it for some albums long so it shouldn't really hurt, only reason he stopped is his solo albums never really sold well ;D

PIP it is!

Pink Floyd have influenced thousands upon thousands of bands and artists in one way or another accross the genres.  You've got to remember, Floyd were huge, and virtually everybody knows who they were. :)
