I waited till Peter opened an 'Ayreon-topic', but is seems he's busy ;)
So, what do think of Ayreon? Or maybe you've never heard of it (SHAME ON YOU!!) What's favourite album/song/artist performing on Ayreon/etc...
My favourite album is Into the Electric Castle. The story is über, the music is very complete, the songs stick in your mind, it has Sharon den Adel (What a voice) and Damian Wilson (Dito).
Best song imho is Dawn of a million souls, vocals by 'Sir' Russel Allen.
My favourite artist is Russel Allen (Damian is a close 2nd). He has this very powerfull voice, but can still sing these very soft parts... Marvelous!
And, to top it of, I was able to withness some Ayreon songs performed live during the Star One tour. The best gig I ever was. And after the gig I was able to talk to Arjen and the other artist's.
This (http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0SQBqHHgVMglbnJORG!D7gT8JBAN7TJ7AFg8AYR3F8SiKGLH6!4stwBYkgDk5Dm7G2nX334EhuZt0od8rBQNdT8RHo!z02GsajGhcsLAp80cKDYqd1sRIJQ/Ik%20en%20Arjen.jpg) was the result when Arjen suddenly saw a camera ;D
Ah, we're talking so much about Ayreon, so give it a topic! ;D
I've just said it in another topic, but my favorite is The Final Experiment. A lot of variation, a great story and of course fantastic music. I like the different singers and the different types of instrument. A lot of guitar, a lot of old-sounding synthezisers (could have been the moog), some harpsichord and some mellotron (my favorite instrument)
His next albums Into the electric castle and The dream sequencer/Flight of the migrator are good albums but, in my opinion, they don't have the magic The Final experiment got. I'm not so impressed by Star One. Just a lot of rough guitarwork and very few fine melodies.
His latest album The human equation is impressive. Arjen collected a impressive cast with a lot of well known musicians. It's a massive piece of music, I like it, but in my opinion there is not so much variation between the different songs. I miss some nice instrumental parts, ok, Ken Hensley and Oliver Wakeman are playing a nice piece of keyboardwork, but that's it. But overall a very good album, The Human Equation.
I must say I find much to agree with in your post, Mark Jan. There certainly is a special mood about the first one, that he's never quite recreated later. I find it hard to decide what album is the best. I think they all have glorious moments and moments I could do without. But you can always expect a certain quality from Arjen. Although I agree 100% on your remarks about star one, it wasn't completely without merit. But generally the least satisfactory I've heard from him.
Favourite Ayreon tracks / (rating out of 6):
1.Loser / (6) - I haven't rated this album yet, but I know this one...
2.One small step / (6)
3.And the druids turn to stone / (5+)
4.Dawn of a million souls / (5+)
5.The castle hall / (5)
6.Abbey of Synn / (5)
7.My house on Mars / (5)
8.To the quasar / (5)
And the one's that got (5-) :
Back on planet earth
Computer eyes
Into the black hole
Swan song
The awareness
The charm of the seer
The dream sequencer
The dream sequencer reprise
Tower of hope
But other songs from "The human equation" may deserve a spot among the top ten. I'll know when I've had it for about a year.
I began my Ayreon listening with Human Equation. Didn't have time enough to discover the previous albums (probably because after buying Human Equation, the 2 CD's where "stuck" in my car for month ;D, it's was so good, I didn't want to out something else in the CDplayer... ).
Sometimes my boyfriend put other albums in his car, but the one I really know is Human Equation, and also other's Arjen works like Ambeon.
I love it :-* My favourite will probably be "Loser", but it may vary with my mood! ;)
Good idea, Appelmoes, to start an Ayreon topic!
I never really know which one is my favourite album, prolly the one I'm listening to at that moment :)
The albums I prefer, though, are:
- The Human Equation: a truly ingenious album, can't stop playing it
- Electric Castle: my first contact with Ayreon, really superb, too
- Flight of the Migrator (CD2 of the Universal Migrator): when I need more metal, I listen to this one
I have two favourite tracks:
- To The Quasar (FotM)
- Isis and Osiris (ItEC)
No favourite guest musicians/singers, really, I just like the large diversity in the projects Arjen sets up ;)
Oh, and I would really LOVE to see this stuff being performed live, but it seems I am two or three years late... As far as I understood Arjen's comments on his forum, he's basically tired of touring and everything, so chances are small that there will be a tour again. But never say never....
The Final Experiment as well as Actual Fantasy and the Dream Sequencer don't really get to me as much as the others.
I recently bought Actual Fantasy Revisited when it came out, to hear how it would sound with 'real' instruments and it's sure a fine album, but not a killer, IMO.
Actual Fantasy is imo somewhat 'strange' since it's not a real rock-opera, no story and 'fixed' singers. Still I think it's a very good album, though the song at the end of the album don't reallly get me. Computer eyes sung by Edward Reekers (reallly warm voice) is my favourite of the album, and one of my Ayreon alltime Fav's.
ItEC was my first album to. I heard it at a friends place and bought the album asap. The other albums soon followed. I bought a couple of Vengeance albums to, some good old rock 'n roll 8) Ambeon en Star One I also bought the minute they were released. And the After Forever Single Emphasis - Who Wants To Live Forever. As the title says, it features the Queencover played with Ayreon and with guest vocalist Damian Wilson.
I really like the cover's Arjen makes, they really sound different from the originals (Space oddity)
I hope there will be another Star One album, cause such a projects will make a tour less difficult to plan, since there are less singers involved, and still there will be room for Ayreon songs. And Star One is always a good alternative if you're in the mood for some 'stronger' tunes :D
I can understand that Arjen is tired of touring. I don't know how many gigs he played last time, but the fact that his music is widespread all over the world (I heard that he is very popular in Japan), he will be touring all around the world.
But he's not well known in The Netherlands, I think. Only within the progscene it's a well known name. I only know him for a couple of years. His fans call themselves The Ayreonauts. I think that your are real fans, Peter and Appelmoes, (at least more than I am), do you call yourselve an Ayreonaut? ;D

Errr, well, 'Love' and 'Loser' from THE were in the dutch charts top 10, I believe....

Hehe, if someone did, I'd be honoured. I don't give myself such titles.... :-\
Eeeuuuhh, really, :-[ Well eeuuuh, then my statements are completely false. :-\ Honestly, I don't follow the charts, because the progrock don't score very well in the charts. They are dominated by more popular music.
But it's clear that Arjen deserves a lot of attention and high positions in the charts! ;)

The reason he doesn't tour (I think) is because it's very hard to get the vocalist's on his album to make some time available from their own busy schedule. That's why it was more or less possible with Star One. (Less artist's)
Anyway, I saw him live and it still gives me chills when I watch the DVD. Damian Wilson doing some acrobatics on the metal pillars ;D He climbed on them, and sang his song about 3 meters above the floor, to the delight of those standing on the balcony (Guess where I stood...)
That's a good point Appelmoes! ;D Never thought of it. It's a bit difficult or almost impossible to do a worldwide tour of The Human Equation. Hmmmm, collecting about 20 musicians, all busy with their own bands and activities. But ok, you are a lucky one who saw him live. ;D

Hehe, mine also! Like Marillion -> Fish -> Ayreon, you know.... Love it.
This afternoon I bought the special edition of The Final Experiment. Disc 1 is still the same but added is a 2nd disc with semi-accoustic versions of 9 songs from the original. It's really a different ayreon sound, but, as is to be expected, it still sounds really great. Some of the vocalist are pretty unknown which gives the most songs a more or less new sound. imho Eyes of time never sounded better in this version with Ruud Houweling as vocalist and Esther Ladiges' clear voice is one I would like to hear on a new Ayreon album. Irene Jansen just keeps sounding better and better.

you can say that again ;)
I was there with appelmoes?? and his sister. Never been at such a gig ever again!
His last tour was, as said, with StarOne and he toured only in Europe (2 or 3 venues in Germany, 1 in France 1 in belgium and 3 in Holland)
That wasnt really to call a 'tour' ;)
However, you will meet him at various concerts in 'progland'. For example Appelmoes?? en I have met him at a Threshold-gig a vew months ago.
But (sadly) he dint play along :(
You
can hear him as guest artist on albums of a vew bands like Within Temptation and After Forever and in collaboration with that girl (whats her name again?? - Ambeon 'project') All durch btw, I dunno if you can find him on non-dutch albums...
The fact that he gets even a (female) singer from South America proofs he is well-known all over the globe.
Personally I'd like the fact that he always gives new, unknown musicians a chance to proof themselves a worthy artist - and he always comes up with great artists!

er, it sez 'ere...
I'd say, go back in time. Start with the current (The Human Equation), then try Into the Electric Castle. I left out the Universal Migrator, cos it's a rather difficult album, one CD featuring kinda 'ambient' music, the other one metal.
All people who ask me, what this or that Ayreon album sounds like, I mostly answer rather smart-assily: 'well, like Ayreon, mostly' ;D One can surely hear some Genesis, or Maiden or Dio or Manowar or Pink Floyd or whatever in Ayreon tracks, but what is that comparison good for....
Very fine reviews of the Ayreon albums (including sound-analogies) can be found on DPRP.net:

The Human Equation is more progmetal than progrock, I think. It's a very harmonious piece of music. With a lot of vocalist, all 'playing' their own role, supported by powerfull music. Sometimes it sounds a bit like threshold, but it's sometimes very different.
I think what's typical about Ayreon is that ghe uses very different styles troughout the albums. So you just can't label a album 'metal' (except for the Universal Migrator albums)

Thats why I like his music so much, my fav example is Day 16 Loser from THE, how many metal tracks start with a didgeridoo and a violin.

Arjen put some of the responses he received about this album from record labels back in the early 90s (they all turned him down) on the inside of the back cover - hilarious. If you look at it from today's poit of view, they all surely bite their butts now.
Oops, language please!

I've just ordered the two CDs that Peter recommended, and NOW you're saying that it's just a bunch of idiotic "headbanging" stuff...

NEW RELEASE NEWS :
AYREON: More than six months after it was first hinted at, a third single from Ayreon's 2004 album The Human Equation will be released on June 16th. It is called Come Back to Me, and is a slightly extended and newly mixed version of the song Day 7: Hope. Other tracks include:
August Fire. Originally written for The Human Equation, features Mostly Autumn's Heather Findlay on vocals (she played the character 'Love' on the Human Equation). Heather also wrote lyrics, vocal melodies and played the Bodhran.
When I'm 64. A Beatles cover song that Arjen recorded 15 years ago as a demo with keyboardist Cleem Determeijer, who has played on various Ayreon albums.
Back 2 Me. A special remix by Two Maniacs (Joost van den Broek).
A videoclip for the song was shot during the summer of 2004 and is featured on the single together with a 'making of' video.
The single will once again contain a special code with which you can access special downloads from the site (for a limited time only).
Thanks for the information Moonloop ;) ;D
My favourite Ayreon albums are The Final Experiment, after ordering I had to wait 5 weeks or so but it was worthwile waiting for! A great song is Sail away to Avalon, You can put all your energy in it. And then there is a great album Flight of the Migrator, the way a heavy album should be.
My least favourite is actual fantasy, I liked the song beyond the last horizon but then the version on the Ayreonauts only album, it's too modern for me I think.
My favourite album is definitely Into The Electric Castle. Also somewhow very fond of Actual Fantasy, it grew on me and is the one I put on most. Still love the magic of The Final Experiment.
Got an "Ayreon-overdose" feeling after the Migrator albums, so don't have Star One and The Human Equation.
But still, great band/project and many kudos to Arjen Lucassen.
You definitely need to get THE, it's great! Just do it like I do, take a break from your favourite artists from time to time, like a month or so, listen to other stuff, and then return.

OK, I might reconsider and will get back on this then!
Part of it is also that there's just too much good stuff I want to get and I choose a new band or artist instead of one I already have a few albums of..
Ayreon is a great project. Lucassen must be a genius, what can one say? To create this entity... It just gets bigger the more into it you get. Be sure to buy the revisited edition of Actual Fantasy. It's that much better!
Well said. I have all his stuff, also 'Ambeon' and 'Star One'. The Dream Sequencer is probably my favorite Ayreon album, but I love them all.
Ayreon is one of those very few bands where I have a really hard time deciding which album's my favourite. It might be "The dream sequencer", "The final experiment", "Into the electric castle" or "The human equation"... Don't b****y know!! :o

So do I. The trailer is way too short. According to the Ayreon website more will be revealed soon.
What do you think of the full mp3 on http://www.streamofpassion.com/ ?
For me, I wasn't impressed by first listening (too little melody, I'm used to more at Arjen's projects), but it is 'growing' now. The voice of Marcela Bovio is so beautiful.
Yes, that sounds interesting. I'm not a big fan of most of the Ayreon stuff but I do like a good female vocalist and they're quite scarce in the prog-world. Will give it a try I think - it's only money, after all ;D
Just finished listening to the track "Deciever" from the forthcoming album of Stream of Passion. It sounds very promising. I wasn't really impressed with the singing qualities of Marcela Bovio when i heard her on "the Human Equation", but it seems she's totally in place here, doing an excellent job.
I think i'll order me a copy... :) :)

I listened to all the soundsamples, but I can't say I like it as much as the ayreon/ambeon/Star one sounds. Perhaps it needs some "get used to".
Love Arjen's work. Love Clive's contributions also. A particular lean towards Castle and Universal Migrator. Lana Lane's voice on 2094(I think thats the name) and Dragon on the Sea is stunning and one of the morebeautiful songs I've heard. Many great moments.
the Human Equation I liked also but gave it away as a spontaneous gift before I could really get to know it. Itseemed kind of more of the same and more melancholy. The dark. But that;s ok.

THE is imo a more allround album like TFE and ItEC, where as in the UM albums Arjen's Softer and Heavier style are split. THE is more extremer concerning the styles. The heavy is heavier, the folky is folkier etc. (IMHO that is ;))
I've resently heard music from Ayreon for the first time. It was from The Human Equation. There were many parts that I liked, but that isn't too difficult on an album with so many different styles. There are also a few parts that I don't like, for example the instrumental 'spacy' parts and the 'rammstein-like screaming.' I like the way LaBrie sounds on it, but I prefer Dream Theater

It blew me away!!! I am passionately into concept albums so the 2 CDs were spining in my car for almost a month. So I went and bought the complete back catalogue... TFE was good overall but a little "amateurish" to my ears, as if Arjen wanted to impress the world deliberatly. AF wasn't a thrill to me until the 6th or 7th session. What didn't clicked to me wasn't the music, but the instruments. In fact, I think the album is pretty good, but the synth sound of the album is IMHO its weak point. Then came the Migrator albums and although I found them to be good albums, they didn't thirll me. I had lost hope on Ayeron and thought their masterpiece had been already released (ItEC)... then came For Ayreonauts Only and I got some nice smiles on my face to some remaking of previous work... that got me going and went to look for their last album, which I had heard was released some months ago, but wasn't dying to listen... stupid me!!! THE is probably in my top 5 all time CD's. The cast of characters is simply perfect! and music blends perfectly into the story. Check the review DPRP did on this album at http://www.dprp.net/reviews/200430.html#ayreon (http://www.dprp.net/reviews/200430.html#ayreon) I agree completly with it. THis album broke my previous record.. it sounded in my car for 5 weeks in a row... I just cannot get enough of it!!!

My favourite artist is Russel Allen (Damian is a close 2nd). He has this very powerfull voice, but can still sing these very soft parts... Marvelous!
Now I've seen Russell's name misspelled so many times that I've decided to do something about it (it's not only you, Appeloes):

Ehm...me? ;D
Like it very much, i must say. Quite a catchy tune. It has been in my system for the whole day. That's a good thing. :D
Too make it easy on the rest, here's a quote from Arjen's PM:
Quote from: shaaykaynauAs we recorded vocalists, we will give you an ACAPELLA sample of what was recorded.
This obviously reveals not only the vocalist in question, but a little bit of the story as well (perhaps).
Here we have vocalist #1 (http://www.ayreon.com/ayreon/ayreonseven/mystery_singer1.mp3).
Keep in mind: THIS IS ACAPELLA, the music has been taken away.
Hmm... sounds ok so far to me.
I don't really have a clue who it could be. But I think I've heard him before.
But it's not one who I'm listening daily to, that's for sure.

Well, considering all the stuff he's been through, this album is bound to be heavy ;)

That's no problem, 'Flight Of The Migrator' and 'Space Metal' are great *horns* 8)
Didn't understand very much, something about "Migrator" and "Ride the Comet"?
Quote from: ArjenYou've got it, it's Magali Luyten! SHE's a young and talented rising star from our 'neighbours' Belgium. Amazing *and* goosebumps :-)
The lyrics were really close, here they are:
Carry out your dangerous task, sail uncharted spheres
Live out our dreams, ride the comet!
Journey on the Migrator trail, cross the new frontiers
Pass on our genes (jeans, haha!), ride the comet!
Does this help? ;) He says the lyrics are
close, but I actually had them correct :o The jeans was a forum member joke :D
LOL I thought it was a man! ;D
She's got balls, man! 8) ::)
I like it even more now.
Well in all honesty I love all of Ayreons albums, but I would have to say that Into The Electric Castle and The Human Equation are the best concept albums when it comes to a story line. Musically all the albums are just great, they all have remarkable muso's on it, and well selected guest artists who never fail to please. But if I was to pick my favorite out of the bunch. It would have to be Into The Electric Castle. The music and styles on that album, are well close to The War Of The Worlds by Jeff Wayne, which was the biggest selling story line concept album ever made. I for one love concept albums, and when they are done with great musicians it makes them truly remarkable. These type of albums never bore me, and are never far away from my Cd player. Including all the other great concept albums from years ago by artists like Rick Wakeman, Genesis, Jethro Tull. as well as Nolan/Wakeman just to name a few.

Ayreon Fan Meet Sept. 15th!
Members of the messageboard spent nearly a year already organizing a fan-meet for Ayreon (Arjen Lucassen) fans. What started out as an informal get-together for forumers at a zoo, turned into a little bit of an event where 250 people can attend. It takes place September 15th, 2007 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. It starts 13:00 and ends aproximately 19:00.
Among the highlights of the day are a cover band called Ayreonotes, who will play a set of Arjen Lucassen tracks, an exclusive sneak preview of the new Ayreon album, hanging out with fans from around the world and perhaps even some special guests.
You can now order tickets via the website here - remember, tickets are limited! For more information please check this thread on the messageboard - relevant information starts at page 36. For questions please contact: fanmeet@live.nl and use 'fanmeet' as topic.
(@Peter: If you think this should be in another topic (events or something) be my guest and move it to the proper section ;))
And InsideOut picked it up. They have a little blog-entry on their myspace (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=69880730&blogID=289912496) about the Ayreon Fanmeet *horns*

Pfft! ;)
Seriously though, Clive and Arjen should team up and make the ultimate concept album!
Yeah, you're right!
Arjen: acoustic guitars, electric guitars and bass guitars
Clive: keyboards, piano, synthesizers
Add a drummer and a singer (or maybe not! they could handle it theirselves completely!).
What about Gavin Harrisson as a drummer, he is quite impressive and inspirational. And he hasn't been in many bands yet (unlike Mike Portnoy, Nick D'Virgilio, and Mick Pointer is of course too connected with Clive to be part of this)
... we can dream, can we?
Do you know what will be the difference between:
- Special Edition (2CD + DVD)
- Limited Deluxe Edition (2CD + DVD)
Is it only the package (and the price :D)?
Fact is that I always buy the version with DVD 'the making of', which I only look once ???.
Hahaha Teunis, I always do the same! :D
I think the difference between the Special Edition (2CD + DVD) and the Limited Deluxe Edition (2CD + DVD) is the same as with The Human Equation. There was this Limited Deluxe Edition that came in a DVD package. I had the Special Edition that came in a "Snow package"*, the cardboard box. Both had the DVD with "the making of", so I don't know what was the difference except for the package... :D
* "Snow" from Spock's Beard, I also could have said "Testimony package" (Neal Morse), I hope you know what I mean.
Yes, I know what you mean. In that case I have the Limited Deluxe Edition (2CD + DVD) of The Human Equation ;D. Think I'm going to buy the Special Edition (2CD + DVD) of the new album, the one with the zero's and the one's.

I've listened to half of the first disc (I've got comany over). It Ayreon alright, but I can't really say how much I like it. I think this will be an album that needs to grow on me. Same as THE actually. It took me a while before I really liked that one.
I was there to, I was wearing a Star One T-shirt.... and standing on the small steps on the right right in front of the stage....
I loved the gig and the DVD-material... I hope the material grows on me soundswise, and riffwise it grabs me by the throat: melodywise, it doesn't do it for me... yet.
I've noticed too that there's less melody on this album. Not that's it's not there, but in comparison to previous albums... It's a bit more industrial here and there. I don't think that's a bad thing though, it adds diversion to the album and Ayreon in general. I think it reflects on Arjen's darker period he had to go through.
The album is indeed darker than the previous Ayreon albums. I think it suits the story a lot.
I really like the album though i still have some doubts about the choice of characters.
Which ones?

Hmm, after having listened to 01011001 twice now, I must confess I'm a bit disappointed. To make the analysis short: This album is like taking all the tunes and sounds from Flight of the Migrator, Into the Electric Castle, The Human Equation and maybe Star One, and putting them in a mixer. Some melodies really sound like they were struggling hard to be different from the old stuff, getting strange in the process. This is clearly a commercial release to me; still extremely professional, exquisite choice of artists and the sound is superb, but it lacks originality. I expected more from the tall guy, really.
This album gives a clear "no" as an answer to the question: "Is an artist allowed to copy himself?"
Quote from: maddox on Tue, 2008-01-29, 12:45:05Well for one, i'm no fan of Evergrey and Tom Englund doesn't impresses me on the album at all.

Yeah, Ty doesn't convince me either. Maybe it's because of the melody lines, but it sounds like he can't stay in tone.
Furthermore, I don't really like Simone Simons voice. Don't know how she sounds with Epica, but here it doesn't do it for me.
Anneke van Giersbergen, on the other hand, sings very good! And Magali Luyten sounds also very impressive. I wish she had done more for this album.
I guess it's true that no guest singers stand out that much. The Human Equation had James LaBrie, Mikael Akerfeldt, Eric Clayton, etc...

Quote from: Peter on Tue, 2008-01-29, 13:51:04This album gives a clear "no" as an answer to the question: "Is an artist allowed to copy himself?"
In this case I'd say "yes", since it's a concept. I heard tunes from all of Ayreon's former albums. That gave me goosebumps. It doesn't bother me at all.

That doesn't have to be a bad thing. I think that the more different characters from different stiles you use, the more interesting it stays/gets.

+1. 8)
The songs Connect The Dots and Web Of Lies are not very interesting to me...
These also don't fit in the story that much.
And what's with all those symbols which represent the characters? Like: a heart, an upside down pentagram, an omega symbol, Yin-Yang, saint Patrick's cross, etc...?

Hmm, strange, since he uses the same technique as Roine Stolt, who you like. At least, that the reason why I like Ty's song. It's different, just like Loser on THE. It truly sticks out from the rest and I think Ty sang it that way too. Shows how he "felt" that song.
I can say sooo much about this album that i could easily write an extremely long post. But I'll just stick to this: Arjen has done in again.

Tom
Hey Appel!
So it finally has grown on you?
In one day? ;)
For me it was an instant classic! Brilliant album, I think it's my favourite Ayreon album.
Let's make a top 10:
1. 01011001
2. The Human Equation
3. Into The Electric Castle
4. Universal Migrator Part 1: The Dream Sequencer
5. The Final Experiment
6. Actual Fantasy
7. Universal Migrator Part 2: Flight Of The Migrator
But if you take Universal Migrator Part 1 and 2 as a whole it comes on fifth place. Just after The Final Experiment.
All those recent messages put me in the mood for a bit of Ayreon. So I watched the bonus DVD of THE that I had for more than a year but had never viewed so far. Interesting. Arjen must be one of the sole artists that "writes" lyrics while jogging ...

That one is easy. All the singer could pick a symbol that would be used in the booklet to let the listeners see, who's singing what. For example, Floor chose the Omega sign, because that used for After Forever as well. Daniël pick the Registered trademark thingy, because his latest album deals with today's materialism (or something). Every symbol has a connecion with the singer. It's up to you to connect the dots :P

Yeah of course, I can understand that.
But still, Marjan Welman, Simone Simons, Liselotte Hegt, Wudstik, Ty Tabor, Phideaux Xavier and Arjen himself don't have these symbols.
It's something that only "Forever" has.
Oh well...
Now listening to Newborn Race. The acoustic guitar has a Into The Electric Castle feel to it. "Tunnel Of Light" I think it was.
By the way, part C "The procedure" of "Newborn Race" is a highly addictive and happy part!!

I bought Ayreon's last album because this work was recorded with Floor and Joost from After Forever.Know I think it's good album,4/5.
Floor is also on The Universal Migrator I: The Dream Sequencer and on Arjen's other project Star One. Joost also appears on The Human Equation and on the Live DVD/CD of Star One: Live on Earth.

That's probably the idea. You should know that the whole Ayreon saga is a concept. So they are conceptalbums inside a big concept. With a theme. So musical themes are not exceptional.

Yes... I know... so I'll stand in a corner and be ashamed for the rest of the day... I'm afraid that means I cannot listen to the album (the stereo is in the other corner of the room!). ;)
Well, I guess the real reason that I haven't given it a listen is that I've had the latest Avantasia album as well as a few Caamora EPs on "heavy rotation" both in the stereo and in the car. Once I get tired of either of these, I'll give the new Ayreon album a try.

Why would he do it under the same name? It's the 'Ayreon saga'...
The minstrel who forsaw the apocalypse of mankind is gonna make a return? With another (different) story?
I think that would be very difficult...
The medieval-folk-scifi mix is inextricable tied to the story of Ayreon.
I'm sure he'll continue writing rock operas, but I think he'll do it under a new name, maybe Aslos or something (sounds great to me to be honest).
Or what about 'Mautorian Spurnkin', just letting loose some random names.
'Qwaszx'?

Of course, that kind of magic could never happen again, but he's constantly delivering great music - great product!!
The only true disappointment in the new album is that he didn't manage to hold off Jørn Lande any longer. I have yet to check them out, since their singer is on 01011001. Although it's not my favourite singer on that album. How would you describe their sound?
Hmmm... I think "very bluesy hard rock" covers it best. I can highly recommend their first albums, the self-titled debut "Gotthard" and "Dial Hard" - after that they actually got a bit soft... in spite of the name!! ;)
Hmm, I like bluesy rock, although I don't have a lot of music like that. I might order their first album next month then. It's been a while since I bought a new album (excluding 01011001, since that one HAD to be bought).
I haven't checked their homepage for a while, but maybe they still have some sound samples there - worth a try!
In my experience samples don't really give away a lot :-\ Because of some samples I bought the latest Symphony X album, what I now dearly regret. (Horrible album :() So I'll just go for the album, and let myself (hopefully) be pleasantly surprised :)

Agree on both points. Nick did a better job not grunting and to be honest i really really hated the grunts, any grunts for that matter in those days.
Draconian Times is indeed outstanding though i think that Icon is just as good.
Yeah, Maddox, there are things in their past that are poor compared to the last album, but I sorely miss stuff like "Winter's dream" and much of the "...tragedy" stuff.
Grunts are horrible. To be on topic: Arjen has managed to make it fit, sort of. It would still be better without it, but it's never been used this well in the past by anyone. I hear people say it's a cool effect. Well, yeah, maybe, but why grunt throughout an album, then? -As some does. It's no longer an effect, it's the normal run-of-the-mill way of the album as a whole.
I think Arjen did a very good job with the Growls/grunts on the Ayreon albums though i must admit i don't really like it on TFE.
It's an extra addition to the music and it doesn't bother me a bit. In fact it makes the songs much better then if it was without the growls/grunts.
Trauma for instance.
I can't imagine that song without it.
Ok, now I'm really curious! Once I switched off the computer, I'll go straight to my room and listen to the new Ayreon album!!
It was worst on TFE, agreed.
Agreed about the grunts on TFE.

As I understand it, Moonloop was last active on 09 August 2006, at 12:36:20.

Time is an illusion - lunchtime doubly so...
...just don't record anything in doubly...!
How offtopic is this :o But welcome back Gelert! Disappearing just when I was starting to understand what you were actually saying (some times) was horrible! :'(

Yeah, but in gelert's defence, I was involved in this too.
In my defence, gelert started it! ;D

There will be time for that, bluepony; gelert's back *ola* ... and so am I. *horns*
YAY to that! *ola*
Oh no, wait - that would be off topic, wouldn't it?! ;D
Peter will be soooo crossed when he reads this :D I'm actually starting to feel guilty :-[

If we're lucky he won't read it before he's been at the Arena gig in Aschaffenburg - and then he'll probably be too happy to mind. ;)
(And if I'm very unlucky he'll read it
before the gig, recognize me there and punish me for always going way off topic... d'oh!!)
Who's driving, you or he?
It's always Bluey, Appy: Drivin us crazy ;D
Nicky.

Who's driving, you or he?
Both of us, probably, since we live about 60 km away from each other and neither where he lives nor where I live is on the way to Aschaffenburg for the other. (Mind you, it might be soooo much better for him not having to share the same car with me, especially one that I'm driving!) ;D
Ooh, then it'll be ok. It's not like he can force you to walk home when you've got your own car :P
Oh, thanks Appy - and I thought you were on my side!
Neh, that'll make your steering the car a lot more dangerous :o
I'm always on your side, I'm the forum gentleman, me (http://www.timvermeiren.be/klj/afb/smileys/angel_smile.gif)

Hooray!

Soooo, I recently left 01011001 in it's case for a week, and when I listened to it again, I enjoyed it even more :) Could this be the album I will grow to like more then Electric Castle?
Ok.
To get ontopic again:
Here are some youtube-ish movies for the Dutchies (Arjen speaks in Dutch here... with a terrible dialect from The Hague by the way! ;D)

The next movie is in English. Arjen tells us how the song 'The Fifth Extinction' is build.

This movie is in Dutch again. Now the song 'Waking Dreams' is explained.
