Post by: JJ II on Tue, 2005-09-20, 09:42:39
Maybe we can reconstruct the changing setlist during this tour. I've heard the band rehearsed about 2:40h of music, so the setlist will change quite a lot. I do need some help here with the order, so please join in...

Medusa
Serenity
Elea/Hanging Tree**
A State of Grace
(Don't forget to) Breathe
Smoke and Mirrors
Chosen

The shattered Room
Skin Game*
Purgatory Road**
Witch Hunt
An Angel Falls
Painted Man
The City of Lanterns
Riding the Tide
Enemy Without
-----
Solomon
Crying for Help Rock/Metal version
Jericho*

* Zoetermeer only
** Verviers only

Hi to everyone! I've been away from the forum for a while....... is it all ok???  ;)

So... three days after the gig.... I find the time to post the setlist which is, I think, very precise and exact as I wrote on my phone each track as soon as the they start to play it!!

- Intro: The William's Tell Overture (with the new film... very good!!)
- Bedlam Fayre
- A Crack In The Ice
- Midas Vision
- A State Of Grace
- (Don't Forget To) Breathe
- Smoke And Mirrors
- Purgatory Road
- Waiting For The Flood
- Medusa
- Serenity
- The Shattered Room
- The City Of Lanterns
- Riding The Tide
- Chosen
- Skin Game
- Butterfy Man
- Enemy Without

ENCORES:
- Friday's Dream
- Jericho
- Crying For Help VII (rock version)

Time total: 2h 00'...... I sadly read in another post that they played half an hour less than the other dates due to a John's illness (I hope he feels better now... ). I'm very unlucky.............  :'( :'( :'(

Anyway, the gig was great, especially the two highlights of the new album, The Shattered Room and Purgatory Road which is, IMHO, the real masterpiece of Pepper's..... simply GREAT!!! If I could have made some change in the setlist, I would have preferred Solomon or Sirens instead of both Medusa and Midas Vision which are really not, ever IMHO, the best tracks or the first two albums......

Any other opinion? Who was there??? (Peter I know you was...  ;) )

Bye... CU soon....

Spad.

I received the following setlist from austria:

Setlist from Vienna, Planet Music 19.9.2005

Wilhelm Tell Overture
Bedlam Fayre
A Crack In The Eyes
Midas Vision
A State Of Grace
Breathe
Smoke And Mirrors
Purgatory Road
Witch Hunt
Medusa
Serenity
The Shattered Room
Chosen
Skin Game
Enemy WIthout
Friday`s Dream
Crying For Help  VII
Jericho

Apparently a rather short set again, which makes me worry: is John still ill?? No Butterfly Man, no Hanging Tree, no Solomon?
However, Friday's Dream is a nice surprise!

Keep those setlists coming in!!

Sorry to bother you, but I try to reconstruct the entire tour-setlist here...

Hi folks,

This was the setlist in Budapest on 20th September:

Bedlam Fayre
A Crack in the Ice
Midas Vision
A State of Grace
Breathe
Smoke and Mirrors
Purgatory Road
Witch Hunt
Medusa
Serenity
The Shattered Room
City of Lanterns
Riding the Tide
Chosen
Skin Game
Enemy Without

Encore:
Friday's Dream
Cry VII

Also on the setlist paper (I took it from the stage after the gig ;)) but crossed out with a pen:

Elea/The Hanging Tree
An Angel Falls
Painted Man
Waiting for the Flood
The Butterfly Man
Solomon
Jericho

The gig was fantastic, the Arena guys were really nice and they seemed to have enjoyed the show, especially Rob. It would have been really nice to hear the left-out songs too (especially An Angel Falls and Painted Man), but you can't have everything, can you? Rob, John, Clive, Ian and Mick, thanks for the great concert, hope to see you again soon ;)

By the way, is it only me or has anybody else realized that the live version of Bedlam Fayre is actually SLOWER than on Pepper's Ghost? It was a huge surprise for me because usually it's the other way round with almost every band. The slower pace seemed to add some extra weight to the song. Even the album version of Bedlam Fayre was my big favourite but the live version is truly amazing, a real killer gig opener :o

By the way, besides just posting the setlist from the gig at the Boerderij, let's also reflect upon it: , considering it's the 10th Anniversary Tour, I think it was disappointing and - excluding Waiting For The Flood , which was a real treat - contained no surprises. :-[

Was there not enough time to rehearse a slightly more adventurous set and bring back some songs that haven't been played for a long time? For example, why Medusa again and not Empire... ? Why not In The Blink Of An Eye or the title track of The Visitor? :-[

None of these will pop up 16 October I suppose, but I do look forward to hearing Purgatory Road live which they'll hopefully play then.

Post by: The Butterfly Man on Wed, 2005-09-28, 15:14:04
Yeah Erik, that's what I was thinking as well....the set contained no real surprises except Waiting For The Flood. Why not play songs like Out Of The Wilderness, Crying For Help IV, Empire Of A Thousand Days or Sirens for example!

Don't get me wrong, I like all the songs that they played and I had a GREAT time, but I don't get why they keep on playing songs like Jericho and Solomon over and over again...

Aaaaahhhh....you gotta love this band! :P

Why dont we play all those other songs? This is partly because these are the songs we wanted to play on the tour... and these are ones people wanted to hear. We can´t play everything so choices have to be made. Actually we keep changing the set around, so you never know..... :)

Hi, JJ II!
I'm afraid I did'nt take any notes that same evening (at Klubben Stockholm). But I think it was something as follows, but don't take my word for it. Regretably it was a rather short gig however - just over 90 minutes.

- Intro: The William's Tell Overture
- Bedlam Fayre
- A Crack In The Ice
- Midas Vision
- (Don't Forget To) Breathe
- Butterfly man
- Smoke And Mirrors
- The Hanging Tree
- Purgatory Road
- Medusa
- The Shattered Room
- Chosen
- Witch Hunt
- Butterfly Man
- Enemy Without

ENCORES:
- Friday's Dream
- Crying For Help VII

Please correct me, anyone...

Just kidding, Tom! My mistake - they only played it at the beginning of the show.
However - they made us sing the Swedish version of "Happy Birthday to You" twice.
I would have preffered to listen to The Butterfly Man twice instead... :-\

Thanks for your sympathy. No, John was in great shape I think and played brilliantly. :)
I'm sorry if its sounds like I'm complaining a lot. I enjoyed the concert very much, but I do feel sorry for the band that had to play for such a small crowd as that in Stockholm...

Hello everybody! I just joined this board and i'm going to start by correcting Peter's setlist from Stockholm last sunday just a little bit.. We actually didn't get to hear Butterfly man at all... I got my eager hands on one of the setlists from the stage after the show, and there were many a songs outlined  :-[, according to this list they played the following at "Klubben" in Sthlm 2/10

Bedlam Fayre (no willian tell intro as far as I remember..)
A crack in the ice
Midas vision
Elea
Hanging tree
A state of grace
Breathe
Smoke and mirrors
Purgatory road
Witch hunt
Medusa
The shattered room
Chosen
Skin game
Enemy without
Solomon

Friday's dream
Jericho
Cry VII

Although we missed, at least, Solomon and Jericho and maybe the cronology was a bit different.

Anyway, a big cheers to Rob and John who came out to the merchandise stand to sign and chat a bit. I actually got to speak to John for some time outside the venue and he expressed his disappointment with his white Squier guitar (which sounded crap..) and due to this, more songs were ruled out. He also said that this would have to be the last time they would come to Stockholm, because of the lack of audience. I sencerely hope that this proves to be false as the show sounded great, dispite of the short setlist. And it would be very sad if this were the last time that Arena-fans in sweden could se them live.
I saw the in 2003 at "mondo" in Stockholm and there were probably fewer then than now... But with no advertising and, almost, no record-sales what can you do?

Well! I may be wrong about Butterfly Man - the gig was a couple of days ago...  :-[
The setlist from the stage is of course a much more reliable source than my memory.
The William Tell Intro appeared on the movie before the band entered the stage, though.
Sorry to confuse you, JJ II :-[
However, it's really bad news if Arena will never turn up in Stockholm again... :'(

Title: MAGIC (De Boerderij, Zoetermeer, 16 Oct)
Post by: erik on Mon, 2005-10-17, 09:36:15
Well, yesterday was sheer magic. The night everyting fell into place. The band were in that 'last gig of the European tour mood' which means very loose and relaxed, lots of jokes by Clive, puns aimed at their crew, Mick striking an Ian Anderson pose during his flute intro of Waiting For The Flood and so on. Meanwhile they played superb and the sound was excellent, right from the start. The setlist lasted a wonderful 2 hours and 45 minutes in which the audience was taken to an absolute boiling point! The roof went off! There were many beautiful moments, but Rob's wonderful performance during The Butterfly Man deserves to be mentioned.

And... Last but definitely not least there was the special appearance of two lost sons, Paul Wrightson and John Jowitt. John had been on stage with Arena earlier this year in Mexico and Germany, but Paul's last gig with Arena was at the Paradiso (Amsterdam) in 1998. Except for the soundcheck (merely two songs!) he had not rehearsed with the band, but it seemed as if he had never been away. He sang A Crack In The Ice walking through the crowd from the back of the venue towards the stage just as he did during The Visitor tour. Then Elea introduced The Hanging Tree which was the absolute highlight, shivers all over and a lump in my throat. This special set in the Visitor line up was rounded off with A State Of Grace and Medusa.

What a night! A memorable finale of the Tenth Anniversary Tour.

The complete setlist (not 100% sure of exact order):

Bedlam Fayre
Midas Vision
(Don't Forget To) Breathe
Smoke And Mirrors
Purgatory Road
Witch Hunt
An Angel Falls
The Painted Man
Waiting For The Flood
Serenity
The Shattered Room
City Of Lanterns
Riding The Tide
Chosen
Skin Game
The Butterfly Man
Enemy Without
----
Encores I - with Paul Wrightson & John Jowitt

A Crack In The Ice
Elea
The Hanging Tree
A State Of Grace
Medusa

----
Encores II

Solomon
Jericho

Any signs that it was being recorded for a DVD release?
It would be criminal if they didn't release a DVD from their 10th anniv tour!!

I saw them at the Mean Fiddler on 13th and this was fantastic - possibly the best gig by any band that I have been to, but with Paul guesting aswell I guess that Zoetermeer may have even have topped this!

I think the only song from the setlistpaper, shown above, they didn't play was friday's dream, but I think that song as an encore would have been out of place considering the mood the crowd was in at that moment, which was: Totaly out of their minds ;D *ola*

It was really great to see Paul and John in action. Specially since I became a fan just a few years ago and never saw them live.
When the big instrumental part of Solomon was played I had goose bumps al over.. WOW, that was great!

Thank's guys for a wonderfull evening I will never forget (http://forum.hadrian.net/images/worshippy.gif)

I thought one of the gigs in Poland was to be filmed for a possible DVD release (just like the recordings for Caught In The Act during the previous tour), but I'm not sure this actually happened/will happen.

@Invisible_Jen: yes pure magic indeed!! :)

@Appelmoes: totally out of their minds and with sore throats! ::) mine still is today!  ;D

@Peter: not to rub it in, but you did miss a unique gig! :(

Yeah that would be cool! When do we start producing Shattered Room tokens like badges, T-shirts etc so that we can easily recognize eachother at the gigs? On the Dutch forum there are evolving endless threads trying to figure out who has seen who and who was who at the gig yesterday ;D

Hi All,

First of all: i also very much enjoyed the concert in my former home-town Zoetermeer. Rob has really grown on stage the last couple of times, though I still prefer his studio work over his performances. But he's getting better...

On another note:
Does anyone here have a clue where I can find any recordings from Paul with other bands or what he has been up to musically the last couple of years?
I have always been a real fan of his and seeing/hearing him perform The Hanging Tree brought shivers and took me back to that legendary performance in Paradiso all those years ago. I'd really like to know is there are other recordings that i can listen to of this brilliant performer.
(Nothing against Rob, he IS the arena-singer now and I like his singing, but Paul's performances always gave it a bit extra. Anyone else feel this way BTW?)

Txs.

I'm leaning towards Rob. I really like his voice. He can sing a very nice "ballad" like "an angel falls" and also sing a good rock song like "witch hunt". IMO his voice is more versatile.

There is a poll on this forum where you can vote on your fav. arena singer.

Also as a reply on the discussion in this thread (http://shattered-room.net/index.php?topic=524.0); Personally, I think Rob is technically definitely the better vocalist, he has a better, more varied and more powerful voice. His stage performance has developed a lot and especially in The Butterfly Man he is great. Also remember the impressive pose during the guitar solo of the song The Visitor (Immortal Tour), his arms raised high, looking up with his eyes closed surrounded by bright lights. Great!
But I do feel the "Paul Wrightson effect" in terms of being really moved by his vocals and stage performance (especially in The Hanging Tree).
I love Rob's vocals on Contagion, on Immortal? and Pepper's Ghost they seem a bit more 'cold' somehow (also something to do with the production I suppose, the vocals are very "up front" on Contagion). Don't know if I'm making any sense here but well...

As to recordings of other projects of Paul and what he's up to now: Arena was Paul's first real prog band, his roots lie in rock/heavy metal. One of his pre-Arena bands was Circus, which did gigs including one at The Marquee and did some (demo?) recordings (Jacko The Clown is the title of one of the songs), but I don't know of any official releases and they split up. Paul's currently active in a Deep Purple cover band, but don't have any details on that.
