Peter, judging from your profile, I would recom Fates Warning's Pleasant Shade Of Grey. This is by all means a masterpiece. There are many different moods, you have the great Ray Alder on vocals, subtle Kevin Moore on keyboards, Jim Matheos as main composer, lyricist and guitarist, Mark Zonder, one of the greatest drummers, and fine Joey Vera on bass.

Nicky.

Not quite. ;)  Kevin Moore only acts as a guest on the latest FW albums. Mark Zonder isn't the drummer of FW any more, he started a band called Slaviour, but i agree with Nicky that he's a heck of a drummer. One of the best.

Cap, just checked your LP (as the Room seems to have become a bedroom )  :-X

You should try Ten and Gary Hughes' Once And Future King. They'r close to Arena, and to Ayreon (more melodic and more for "seniors" than Ayreon)  ;)

Guess you'v done Fish's solo stuff (you don't mention it in your LP) ?

And how about Jeff Buckley's Grace ?  Stunningly beautiful !

I'd also think that Eleven would fit into your profile.

(I aint starting a mutiny, I'm just bored)  ;D

Wow, thanks Nicky for the recommendations.
Here's my prompt feedback, hope I'm not stepping on anyone's foot here...

Ten: cheesy.
Gary Hughes: probably going to buy it.
Fish's solo stuff: he's a brilliant entertainer, but the THING for me actually ended in 1987 (except for a very few exceptions, like Gentleman's Excuse me and so)
Jeff Buckley: gawd, how much money was in the wallet he lost?
Eleven: not listenend yet.

Strange that so many people got that impression. Well, some people consider Arena cheesy  ???

Cap, honestly, you think that I would listen to cheesy music ?  Don't you think that my "problem" is the opposite ?  ;D

I'v churned The Twilight Chronicles over 100 times, and it still hasnt turned to cheese  :D

My guess is:  Not all that much. He was still cult when he died, and he still is cult. E.g. most Roomies don't seem to have heard him properly. What a shame  :(

Au de contraire, my dear Nicky.  ;)
I've tasted and tried Buckley, i even have the so called cult album Grace but it does little to me.
And i've heard it quite a lot.

True, Fields is indeed quite good but the album before this one, Fellini Days is even better!

Two best albums of Uncle Fish are of course Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors and Sunset On Empire, with the collaboration of a certain Mr. Wilson, S.

May I object that I prefer Internal Exile to those two even if Sunsets has the mighty Goldfish & Clowns  *horns*

About Ten, I have given up on The Essential Collection after a week-end when, after several previous listens, I listened to each CD four complete times. To be honest, about the" Rockers" CD, it made me angry to hear almost every song ruined by a ridiculous guitar work. I mean, what was the need to put guitar licks on almost each word that Gary Hugues sings ? The man has a great voice while his new lead guitar player (don't remember the name) has very little inspiration so it's just a bad decision. About the songs themselves, I am sorry Nicky but, even if there are a few good songs (mostly coming from the Spellbound album where I hope they are performed better), it would be better called the unessential collection  :(  Just my non musician guy opinion, of course.

OK, Bups, you gave TEC a decent trial, so I respect your opinion  :)

Wish more people would be so respectful toward serious music  :(

Hm, maybe Ten will end up being my special pet group in the Room - just like Bupie has UFO, and Deenie has King Daimond  ;D

However, Gary H's music does evoke in me a feeling that's quite similiar to what I get hearing Clive's stuff; what I'd call "spiritual", or "prophetic"; and I'm not only thinking music here, but culture and civilisation in general  :)

I'm not saying that we should lionise these guys - I don't think they'd like that - but I'm sure that they wouldnt mind some more appreciation of their efforts  ;)

I forgot where you put all the recommendations, Nicky, but I'll just use my own thread as a helper for things I want to listen to and have already.

Ten: gnarf.... trying Twilight Chronicles next, a colleague has it.

Eleven: not my pair of shoes, although interesting.

Knight Area: veeeery nice. I would bet a few hundred Euros that Gerben has each and every Arena album on his shelf, right next to the Fish-era Marillion albums, right beside the Porcupine Tree collection. If I ever did any betting, that is. My "blocker" here is the voice... didn't get to me yet. Amazon bringing Realm of Shadows soon... we'll see.

todo:
A7: anyone with a link? only found a bavarian brass band and a christian worship thingie

Nostradamus: is it that band:  http://www.myspace.com/nostradamusrocks ??

Jeff Loomis: wow, what a guitarist...

Trivium: KOTZ! 7 seconds was enough.

Into Eternity: same thing. just don't like Death/speed/thrash...

Judas Priest:  Nostradamus

The only album in the world I'v given 100/100  *horns*

I'v already written a lot about Nostra (as they call it in the Priest forum) in the Room. But let me sum up. It has everything that I love in rock music:

1)  It has a calm and balance in both music and lyrics that only very experienced musicians can render. (Priest go back to 1969.)

2)  It brings to life the deep Christian feelings that I experience.

3)  It tells the story of a human who went his own way in his seeking, first feeling alone, but after terrible ups and downs, with strong conviction pursued what he felt was his dharma or holy path.

4)  Despite being ostracised and persecuted, Nostradamus showered his love and respect onto all human beings, rich and poor, by treating them medically, psychologically and existentially.

5)  Rob Halford is a unique singer, and very mature. He fills the shoes of Nostradamus with conviction, terrific and terrible.

6)  All of the wide-ranging musical and philosophical experiences of the guys are brought into this work, in perspective and balance. It's a cornucopia of music. There's no other work I know of that has such a range of moods, thoughts, and musical expression.

Priest's Nostradamus is a monumental work !!!  ;)

Jeff Loomis' Zero Order Phase gets 99/100 in my book  *horns*

Trivium: KOTZ! 7 seconds was enough.

I didnt expect you to like'm, Cap  :-\

However, with Trivium, I find it important that one goes directly to their latest album, Shogun. Their first two albums I find insufferable. On the third, The Crusade, they make an effort to be more melodic, and they succeed in the first songs, but the music runs out into an even, somewhat insipid stream along the way.

On Shogun, they'r fully on top all the way thru (partly thanx to producer Nick Raskulinecz), an album (if one can take the alternate growl) that thrills in all tracks !!!

Into Eternity I'd say got stuck at the same place as Trivium were with Ascendancy (their second, in 2005): A lotta youthful energy, breaking all sorta limits, but not much music  :-\

Yeah, Summer 2008. She told me  ;)

Sad !  Her cancer took over very fast. On Howling Book (2003) she's still very vital - altho quite dark too, maybe a premonition  ???

Cap, you like Euphoria Morning too. CC is a great singer, but imo EM is the only real prog masterpiece he's been involved in, and in my analysis that's very much due to the additional genius of Natasha and Alain, plus their good chemistry with CC  *horns*

On their MySpace is mentioned that they consider:  Genesis, IQ, Deep Purple, Brandaris, Queen as their main influences, but Arena sounds good to me too. That's why I like KA so much!  ;). Nothing wrong with Mark Smit's vocals IMO, love it! I had the pleasure to hear the whole 'Realm of Shadows' album live at a concert. I'm sure you will dig it!  8)
