I noticed you missed the 'O'. ;D
Opeth? OSI? ;)

Today I listened a lot to Downhere, a very nice poprock band, unfortunately disbanded.
I really like the 2008 album "Ending Is Beginning", but today I also enjoyed "Wide-Eyed And Mystified" a lot.

Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever

Never gave this band a real listen. With the upcoming album and knowing that Neal Morse is in the band, I give this album a try. And I'm not disappointed, you can clearly hear Neal's signature. Don't know if this is the 'best' album to start with. I do know that I'll play it more often and also the other albums :).

A tricky one but I think my favourite is The Whirlwind, I was lucky enough to see it live twice on the Whirld tour which is worth a watch.

(Today) I'll rate them like this:
1. The Whirlwind (2009)
2. Bridge Across Forever (2001)
3. Kaleidoscope (2014)
4. SMPT:e (2000)

"The Whirlwind" has some of the most fantastic recurring themes I ever heard. It's meant to be one big epic (although I don't see it like that.) The individual songs are killer tunes. Also, this album was a big happening when it came out because noone really expected it. Although, many hoped (and even prayed) it would happen. I think this is their most consistent album and it's a concept album. I really like it a lot.

"Bridge Across Forever" is the first album of them I listened to. The two big epics are great, but unfortunately carry on a little bit too long. Both could have been ten minutes shorter. (And that would leave room for another epic!) Suite Charlotte Pike is really cool with the many styles and it's maybe my favourite. But I think the title track is a little bit slow. I've grown to like it a bit more, but it was always a skipper for me.

"Kaleidoscope" I was initially a little bit disappointed about. It was hyped from the start. (Aren't all TA albums?) They really looked at their first two albums for inspiration. There's two big epics again to bookend the album (much like on "Bridge Across Forever"). And there's a We All Need Some Light-like song in Shine, which happens to be a really nice one, I must add. Also whereas Shine is We All Need Some Light 2, Beyond The Sun is Bridge Across Forever 2 (also a bit boring). Black As The Sky is funny in some way (time signature changes and stuff...), but it tries too hard ("Look! We're prog!"). All in all, "Kaleidoscope" was 'made for the fans'. Still, I really like the two epics (again, they could have been a little bit shorter). In fact, some days I rate this above "Bridge Across Forever".

"SMPT:e" is of course their first. I imagine this must have been a big happening back then: members of Spock's Beard, Dream Theater, Marillion and The Flower Kings... The first (of many) Neal and Mike collaboration album. The epic is cool. And I already mentioned We All Need Some Light (beautiful). I could do without the cover song on the end. It's not bad per se, but a bit of an easy move to put it on your album. I regard it as a bonus track (which makes it still a 60 minutes long album). This album gets the least airplay in my house. By no means a bad album, but I like the others better.

Starting with their reunion album "The Whirlwind", every album has a five to nine year gap between them. Effectively making every album feel like a reunion album, which of course increases the hype. The new album adds a very clever trick to it as well: releasing two variants of the same album (and making you pay for both of them ;D ). The already released singles (especially the second one) makes me really looking forward to it.

Teunis

Thanks for your reply Bupie and PH 8). You both agree, 'The Whirlwind' it is (at least now) ;). It is obvious:

np: Transatlantic - The Whirlwind

I'm at track #7 'Evermore' and I really like what I heard so far. The tracks are way shorter. No long epics, more 'song-oriented', but it works really well. Maybe just because of that, less is more. To be continued for sure *horns*. Reminds me of The Neal Morse Band so now and then, but that's no surprise ;). Why didn't I check it out earlier? Well, I know I played one album a long time ago and it didn't grip me by then. But glad I decided to listen to it now.

Read about this album in the prog magazine 'iO-pages. Some big names on it: Annie Haslam, Billy Sherwood, Steve Hackett. It is symphonic and melodious rock. Not bad at all, not a 'wow' experience (yet). Will be played again ... ;).

Yesterday I listened to:
A.C.T - "Today's Report"
A.C.T - "Imaginary Friends"

And today:
A.C.T - "Last Epic"
A.C.T - "Silence"
A.C.T - "Circus Pandemonium"

I really like this band. I also wanted to buy last year's EP (or actually the year before that, now) "Rebirth" but they mentioned they will release another EP this year probably. I'm hoping for a compilation of both EP's, effectively making it a full album.
If not, I'll buy both EP's anyway. ;D

Teunis

Have to dig into A.C.T. more. What I've heard after you recommended it was really nice. On tomorrow's list ;).

I might have said it before, but I'll rate the A.C.T albums as follows:

1. Last Epic (2003)
2/3. Circus Pandemonium (2014)
2/3. Silence (2006)
4/5. Imaginary Friends (2001)
4/5. Today's Report (1999)

As you can see these albums are difficult to rate. Roughly, they get better with the years, but sometimes I prefer the one over the other. With "Last Epic" being the exception to both mentioned rules. That album is my favourite A.C.T album by far. It's perfect.

"Today's Report" and "Imaginary Friends" are very 'over the top' both musically and lyrically. Perhaps you can call these albums a little bit unfocused (if you want to be mean). The songs on these two albums are 'full'.
"Last Epic" is much much much more focused. I love the story and concept (it's both creepy and weird) and the music is fantastic. The songs are less 'full', there's more 'air' in them. Dunno how to explain.
"Silence" is even more 'stripped down' to the point that some fans were complaining about the lack of solos etc. I think there's a lot to enjoy. The songs are more standalone and overall it's a step down from "Last Epic". It is by no means a bad album! It might be their most accessible.
"Circus Pandemonium" is back to the story-telling again. Not as deep as "Last Epic" but still very nice. There are some similarities. For example, in both stories there's a piteos character who's being exploited by the bad guy.

Like I said, these albums are so good, that my favourite (apart from "Last Epic") is often the one that I'm listening to. "Last Epic" is a 5 star album, the others vary between 4 and 5 stars, really.

np: Camel - Moonmadness

How would you describe this album/band, Teunis?
I know "The Snow Goose" which I like. I remember listening to Camel a few years ago, but discovering that old prog band didn't work out the same as it did with Kansas last year. Both very different, but both respected prog bands.

Today I resumed my alphabetic order listening of my cd collection (thanks for the great idea Teunis!):

Rick Altizer - "Scripture Memory: Pop Symphonies"
It's so simple, yet I like it very much. And I remember all the texts! ;D

Amaran's Plight - "Voice In The Light"
This is why listening in alphabetic order is such a good idea. I very very rarely play this album. But when I do, I like it a lot.

Ambeon - "Fate Of A Dreamer"
I really like Arjen Lucassen... But I have to be honest now. This album didn't age well. At least, not for me. When I listen to these 'reimagined' versions from previous Ayreon songs, I much rather listen to the original songs. Astrid's vocals are not really my cup of tea either. She's obviously doing a great job, especially considering her age at that time.

I listened to these albums two times each. Except for Ambeon. I was really bored the second time and put it off after a quarter of the album.

After that I listened to something that's not in my collection: Casino's "Casino". Clive Nolan once again teaming up with Karl Groom, this time with the late Geoff Mann as the vocalist. I like the sound of the album (it's early nineties Neo Prog, like Shadowland, Landmarq). The songs are a little bit hit and miss, but pleasant enough for sure.

Very melodic, mostly instrumental prog music with a flute so now and then and fantastic guitar solos. You know 'The Snow Goose', 'Moonmadness' is similar. My favourite Camel album is 'Rajaz' 8).

I used to play that one a lot, not anymore. But not only with Ambeon, the 'Ayreon formula' doesn't work anymore with me I'm afraid :-\. Didn't even buy the latest release and I hardly play it. And if I play Ayreon, it's mostly 'Actual Fantasy', which is my favourite :).

A.C.T. - Last Epic

Yeah, easy listening music, sort of 'musical' feeling with this one which is not a disadvantage (think the Clive Nolan musicals). You're mentioning the story, but I hardly listen to lyrics. For me it's the music what is the most important. Will listen again and also to the other albums.
