Well, I thought it was some kind of a "poetic" reference to the sound of the bullets of a German machine gun : http://www.museedelaguerre.ca/cwm/exhibitions/guerre/photo-f.aspx?PageId=2.B.1.l&photo=3.B.1.c&f=%2Fcwm%2Fexhibitions%2Fguerre%2Famiens-f.aspx which made me think that it would suit better for a metal band than a new wave one (and incidentally gave me ideas for new lyrics but don't worry, I won't develop

But it happens that the band chose this name because of a graffiti written on a wall of the district of Berlin called Spandau ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spandau_Ballet ... which fits better to the self-proclaimed

romantic feel of their music.
