Title: Which is the best Arena album ?
Post by: il76candid on Fri, 2007-01-05, 09:29:03
A friend asked me this the other day and also which album was my favourite.
IMO each album released has been better than the one before it.
Peppers Ghost for me is far and away the best they have done.
So do you people out there in Arena World agree with me ?

I can't choose between Contagion and Pepper's Ghost - I love them both.

The best Arena Album is "The Visitor"!!! The pure sound of Arena! It is very strong. The integration of music itself with the lyrics here just "Makes your mind bleed". It is prodigious!!

In Arena's case it is very hard to choose because this band has very large musical spectrum so any circumscription can narrow the full beauty of their music. But even with so many different colors and variations I must single out Pepper's ghost as the most professional, album which united the sound of Contagion and The Visitor in perfect harmony.

Welcome to the cage Lake Of Despond.  *horns*

Is there any reason for that name? Just curious.  ;)

Welcome indeed! I'm sure you will like it here. We have people from all over the world with many different beliefs but we all get on and seems to me to be one of a few forums where everyone respects everyone else. As to the best Arena album.......er, I can't choose, for me it's Contagion or Peppers Ghost or possibly one of the others!

It's hard to decide. In my opinion there doesn't exist weak Arena album... but my favorite is Contagion. Maybe because it was my entrance to Arena world.

Thanks indeed guys ;)

Lake of despond is my favourite song from Threshold, anyone who's not in picture I strongly recommend it... :)

Contagion was my first album to hear as well, it has strongest 'flavour' from all and I really adore it just PG somehow stands on higher stair just because it joins more various elements in so coherent way. But taste should not be discussed, especially in Arena's case where every album tells different story in a same beautiful way...

That's a tough one... the very first Arena CD I bought was The Visitor... and it blew me away! everything about it, nevertheless what stood out for me was the merge of music with Paul's peculiar voice (similar to Marillion in the Fish days)... I bought their previous work and liked it although not as much as Visitor... then the news: Paul was leaving the band... I mourned until I listened to some samples of Immortal? with "the new singer"... man was I shocked! where did they find that guy??!! As soon as the album was released I rushed and bought it... it "clicked" right away. I think all the Arena catalogue is superv, but to me Immortal? has the finest arrangements of them all... and it has the longest track... or not?

I do have to say that pepper's ghost is a good one but for me the best album of all is Songs from the Lion's cage...

Contagion and The Visitor, for different reasons.

These are real roller-coaster albums. PG and I never really clicked, though I really enjoy the album and I love most of the tracks on it. As a whole I think it's less adventurous than the aforementioned two.

Funnily enough, Immortal has some of the greatest Arena-songs on it, but -as an album- a don't play it a lot. Strange eh?

Title: Re: Which is the best Arena album ?
Post by: PH on Wed, 2007-04-04, 18:00:17
From the first album "Songs From The Lion's Cage" I like the (what some people call) Marillion feeling. I think John Carson had a brilliant voice. Don't know how that is now, cause I don't know much about him. He dissiappeared into nowhere, it seems. ;D For me the best songs are "Valley Of The Kings" (the keyboard solo helps me alot making this choice) and "Solomon" (the uptempo part in the middle and the whole "Does it matter to you?-part" are amazing! Especially when "Throw away my life in the fireplace" kicks in, it gives me goosebumps for some reason!).

I don't know pride good enough to say something clever about it, but I do know that Medusa is one of the best piano-songs I've heard so far!

The Visitor... well... yes, amazing isn't it? Paul Wrightson really shines on this one! His dramatic voice makes this album! The returning themes, the "dark" atmosphere, it all helps to paint the picture. Of course "The Hanging Tree" is the one that should be mentioned apart. But to me "Enemy Without" is just as brilliant. "Running From Damascus" gives me goosebumps all the time when "Open your eyes" comes in.

Immortal? is a bit of an odd one indeed. Somehow I wanted to start writing about Contagion, but thought "Hey I forget an album!", and a great one too. This always happens to me. When someone asks me "Name all Arena albums" I start "Song's From The Lion's Cage, Pride, The Visitor, Contagion, Pe... wait... Immortal? has to be in there". Strange eh? It's such a brilliant album!!! But I think "Immortal?" has the same problem as "Pride". "Song's..." is the first *brilliant* album. "Pride" is the difficult second. "The Visitor" and "Contagion" are both masterpieces. "Immortal?" has two difficulties:
1. It's between two masterpieces
2. After "the great" Paul's departure the next album could "never be the same as it's predecessor..."
BUT!!! It has Moviedrome! One of the BEST Arena tracks ever! Almost as good as "Solomon" or "only "Solomon" comes close", depending on where you come from. And what about "The Butterfly Man"?. Pure brilliancy! "Climbing The Net" (some people say it sounds like Marillion, I don't know why to be honest...) gains more and more respect from me. Possibly because of the using of the synths here, and it's really a nice step-up to "Moviedrome"!
People! "Immortal?" exists!!!

Contagion, the other masterpiece. Some people don't like the album. I remember some traveller who told us sometime... ::) He had no real arguments however. Although I REALLY LOVE this album I can imagine it scares people off. The songs are relatively short and there's not really a song that stands out. "Contagion" is the song itself. Well, how epic is that eh? This album is even darker than "Immortal?" and "The Visitor". Arena fluently became heavier. It's hard to say where they made Rock and where they made Metal, but if you HAVE to draw the line, it would be "Contagion". The story and the awesome guitar and keyboard solo's really made this album!

It looks like Pepper's Ghost is going to be somewhat like "Pride" and "Immortal?". That's funny because (someone already said it) it's a perfect mix of "The Visitor" and "Contagion". And it has an epic song à la "Solomon", namely "Opera Fanatica". Maybe because it's a bit straight-forward in some places. "What we would expect". But is that bad? NO WAY! "Smoke And Mirrors", one of the more straight-forward songs has a clever refrain and fits in all places! "The Eyes Of Lara Moon" is a stand out for me too. I simply LOVE the acoustic guitar and the electric guitar solo in the middle. "Pepper's Ghost" is all about emotion if you ask me. Every song is full of emotion, which makes it interesting...

So I LOVE all albums equally (though for me "Pride" being a bit lower rated than others)

1. Songs From The Lion's Cage 5/5
2. Pride 3/5
3. The Visitor 5/5
4. Immortal? 4/5
5. Contagion 5/5
6. Pepper's Ghost 4/5

*
Normal font = GREAT albums
Bold font = Stand-out masterpieces!

So maybe the seventh will be
7. Seventh Album 5/5

That would make sense eh? ;D

This whole post oozes "my opinion", so don't kill me now.

I would pick Contagion because I find it very consistent. Everything clicks the right buttons for me : Rob's voice, the music, the concept, the artwork. Plus, Spectre at the Feast is my favorite Arena song.

I think I found myself pretty much in PH's post ;)

It is very true how you defined it, just with one correction - PG can get just the highest mark, such professionalism is outstanding. I really don't understand why so many people rate it just as good, maybe because they prefer different style which represents Arena sound better to them, but regardless of that the music of the last one simply can't be ignored, how homogeneous and quality it is...brrr :)

Music is such an abstract world and therefore very hard (and not necessary) to be systemized... But on contrary to its analyzing the rating should always come from the heart, in this case PG can be marked just with the maximum, no matter the definitions it belongs to ;)

When a friend of mine introduced me to Arena I started to look for other bands that would make similar music. I found myself reading a lot of dprp.net reviews, f.e. In the meantime now I've found out that I'm not exactly a prog fan, as most of what's considered prog is simply too boring for me. I like it a bit hard, melodious, it needs keyboards and the voice is probably the most important part. Lately I found that not very many bands fit in that scheme, there are ARENA for sure, Sylvan, Porcupine Tree, Kamelot lately, Ayreon, ACT maybe and then it already starts to thin. What I also found out is that I often cannot exactly say why I do or don't like a band/album/track, but it's just an emotion. Nevertheless I highly respect people like the dprp guys, to keep their guts together and do a lot of album reviews in a senseful way, so that I, f.e., can align the reviews to my taste to see if I might like it or not.

Errr, what was it again that I wanted to say? Oh yes, I really love PG, and my favourite ARENA album probably always circulates between Visitor, Immortal, Contagion and PG now.

Right on point there, Bella. It wasn't my first meeting with Arena, but it sure has a special place in my heart, just like Dark Side, as with Johnny boy.

So now that we've seen the light, or heard the angels sing, it's our holy duty to spread the message - in each our way. I think we owe it to Clive & Co. They did the hard work of genius, so we can do the field work.

This question (on the topic here) is easy to answer. In Arena's case, the best album is at any give time their latest studio album.

They are the only band I know of who can say "this is our best album to date" and not lie.

Just hum to yourself... "Silently calling........."

or "Digging deep, for something of value. How much more must I tear at the soil? ................. "

or "Innocence of acquaintance or liaison - The darker side of hunger and need............."

or "What did you do when you woke today..............................And the choices you made"

Magic. So much of it on one album. The only thing is that you must burn your own copy where you have exchanged the acapella thing with the one from "The cry". ;)

I admit, it's easy to see that Contagion can hardly be bettered. And it's hard to compare a symphonic album (C) with a song-based one (PG).

No, I mean symphonic, but I see the link. Conceptual albums have a tendency to appear a bit more symphonic than albums made up of separate songs with each a story of their own.
Title: Re: Which is the best Arena album ?
Post by: Nicky007 on Sat, 2008-03-01, 17:36:46
Now you're really muddling things up, Deenie:  The Almighty Clive Himself has defined Contagion as a "concept album" and Pepper's as a "conceptual album".

As I see it, "symphonic" rock is where you have either a real symphony orchestra, particularly strings, or synths, emphasizing the mood.

Nicky.
Title: Re: Which is the best Arena album ?
Post by: Deenfan on Sat, 2008-03-01, 23:37:19
Ah, I thought you might be a picky bastard!!! ;D

A concept album is doomed to be an album that is conceptual. A concept cannot be non-conceptual?! Clive is trying to explain the difference between an album where all the lyrics participate in telling ultimately one main story, and an album where each lyric tells a different story, albeit within a certain area. Anyway, concept albums usually have segues and returning themes and transitions between songs, and songs with parts and all that. A track can be between one and two minutes without sending eyebrows off to the roof, as it is a little part of a bigger whole.

When I say Contagion is to me a bit more symphonic than Pepper's Ghost, it's because I think it's structurally reminiscent of a symphony to a higher degree than Pepper's Ghost, to put it carefully. The instrumentation is roughly the same on both anyway.

To me, Mr.Big - Lean into it wouldn't become a symphony no matter how many orchestras they threw into the mix. It'd just be a bunch of separate songs with a load of "beards" in the mix... :D

Symphonic is big (symphonies). Early Genesis was symphonic prog (back then they called it symphonic rock).
Contagion is well, not really symphonic I guess. I's... Contagion.

Contagion is eerie gloomy rock.
Very hard to describe actually... And that's why it's called Prog! ;D

Well, when you got the synths so much upfront, you can call it "symphonic", so that would make Contagion symphonic.

But it's one of the more heavy-rockin symphonic albums.

However, Deenie, I dont see the symphonic structure in Contagion. A symphonic structure, as I understand it, is like:  First a lively original movement, then somethin niiice and slooow to relax to, then maybe a medium-speed dance movement like a waltz or two-step, and last a fast gutsy movement like a rondo or vivace.

The "classical symphony" was always made up of four movements, and the first was supposed to be of a specific kind, and heaven knows about the rest, but it is no longer, if ever, required to come in a specific form. The word must mean something like "Together-sound".

Contagion is more symphonic than Pepper's ghost, in the same way that just about every concept album on earth is more symphonic than "Back in black"... ;)

Opera fanatica is almost a symphony in itself, though... ;D

Quote from: bluepony on Tue, 2008-03-11, 15:22:21... about apples!  :D

Indeed.

Here's the tracklist:

01. Crying For Sauce I
02. Climbing The Branch
03. Hangin' In The Tree
04. Blood Red Skin
05. (Don't Forget To) Reap
06. An Apple Falls
07. In The Box
08. A Better Harvest
09. The Peeler
10. Unpeel In A Thousand Ways
11. Crying For Sauce II
12. Waiting For The Fruit

(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fa/Applesauce.jpg/200px-Applesauce.jpg) (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fa/Applesauce.jpg)
The cover art, made by Huge Syme, who also did Immortal?.

Crying For Sauce I. This song is about someone (his name is John) who has the wish to make a nice stew of applesauce. (We'll make these mashes, we'll make the final stew...)
Climbing The Branch. John takes a ladder and climbs in a beautiful tree, full of apples. He's going for the highest apples, since they are the best. (We're climbing up the branch, we're reaching for the high!)
Hangin' In The Tree. So he's hanging in the tree. John thinks back to when he first thought about his plan to make applesauce. (Walk along the waterline, watching as the fruit turns red...)
Blood Red Skin. This is an instrumental song. Sort of, as you can hear John whispering. He's looking at the wonderful apples, they have a nice beautiful red colour. "I will... I will always grind you!" he whispers.
(Don't Forget To) Reap. The man suddenly realises that he hasn't climbed up in the tree just to dream about grinding the apples! He has to reap them first! (Fine apples, sweet dreams, don't forget to reap, my friend!)
An Apple Falls. While busy plucking the apples, one falls to the ground. Our John tries to catch it, but without luck... He knows he cannot use that one anymore... What a pity... (An apple falls, so fragile and exposed. Soon lies crushed and wasted - covered with mould)
In The Box. No wait! the apple falls into the box! This is a really cool instrumental song which represents the happiness of John. Note the morse code at the end of it: it says: Lucky me!
A Better Harvest. It looked as if it was gonna be a bitter harvest, but it worked out just fine. (You can make the apple brown, but you'll never bring my spirit down!)
The Peeler. Ahh this is a nice song. It's about the peeler. John happens to be very good at unpeeling apples. He is singing this song during the peeling of the apples. (I am the Peeler: unpeel the apple here with knives on the roll!)
Unpeel In A Thousand Ways. This song shows how good he is. John uses many knives at the same time. He can unpeel the apples in many ways. This man has a gift, I tell you. Unfortunately there are no lyrics on this one. This is the sing-along version, you see... There's one with vocals, but you can hear it on "Applesauce: The Edits" which will be released a month after this one.
Crying For Sauce II. There's a gap here. John's done with unpeeling the apples, but where's the grinding and stamping of the apples? And then what? Anymore ingredients? And where do we get to hear how it tasted? Ah well... anyway, this song's theme is similar to the first song on the album. John's again hungry for some applesauce, but as you can imagine, the tree's empty... (This choice must be free, apples do not grow on trees)
Waiting For The Fruit. Well the title says it: John has to wait or (knowing how greedy he is) he must buy some applesauce in the supermarket. The song is about the conflict between these two choises: waiting to get the delicious selfmade applesauce? or buying the often less-delicious applesauce in the store? The verses are more about waiting but the chorus is temptingly saying: (It really doesn't matter now, the end will be the same)

This is obviously part one of a two-part. Since this tells only the story of the harvest and the unpeeling of the apple.
The process of making the applesauce and the eating of the sauce has not been told yet. But I'm sure the follow-up will reveal more of this exciting story.

If everyone agreed on which album was the best, there would be a consensus that all the other albums are lesser albums than this one. That would easily look like a fact.

How much more heartening isn't it to know that all the Arena albums are somebody's favourite album? It means there is greatness, without a doubt, in all of them - even if each and every one of us do not recognize it in each and every album. :)

I've been getting the albums in reverse chronological order.  I started with Pepper's Ghost and was pretty sure that would stay my favorite, but I must say, the Visitor may have overtaken it (at least until the next time I listen to Opera Fanatica  ;D ).  Visitor is just an amazing album.  I can't stop playing A Crack in the Ice.  Apparently the first song on every Arena album starts with about half a minute of quiet, arguably unnecessary sound effects, which would tend to bug me, but somehow they end up being among the best songs on the albums.
