For me it's Firefox, I like the way you can configure it to work the way YOU want it to work and not how Bill Gates wants you to.
You just add the extentions you want to do what you want......Easy!

LOL indeed! Hahaha!

I use IE6, didn't know there was IE7 already...
Sometimes (when IE goes crazy) I use Firefox.

I somehow never heard of the other browsers. Except Opera.

Appelmoes??

Maybe a stupid question, but what's the difference 'tween Mozilla and Firefox? My browser is called Mozilla Firefox...

Well, Mozilla is the organziation whose developers publish the browser called Firefox (and Thunderbird, the email application and many more). On the other hand "Mozilla" was also the name for a whole suite of internet applications, which is no longer updated, afaik.

It was REALLY popular for a while. That and Netscape were the only real alternatives to IE. That's a few years ago though, however it still has 2.4% usage of all browsers. Should also point out that Netscape was based on the Mozilla code!

The Beta 2 was released 20th March so I included it, probably no one using it though. (Better off getting FIREFOX)

I have no idea what the fuzz is about but i use IE for a couple of years now (right now IE 6), and i'm quite happy with it. Never have any troubles, it always works for me. Tried Opera beside it for a couple of months (come to think of it, i think it is still residing on my comp.  ;D) and that one works great too. The only problem i have with it is the advertisements. Netscape is also good, but i have some problems with the layout.

Never used any other, soo....IE6 it is for me.  8)

I hate homecalling applications... M$ is known to build apps that way, so... still, I do use Windows... *shrug* :)
Firefox is superior for a lot of reasons, among which are: tabbed browsing, plugins, themes, and: it's Open Source.

Since I use FF, I consider myself an idiot for not using it sooner, that's how much better it is than M$ IE...

Open Source means, that the code which, when put together in a certain way will be the programme you run (in this case Firefox)

  • is freely available,
  • everyone can look at it to see what it does,
  • everyone can contribute to it to add functionality or improve it
  • sticks to standards which were thought out by a huge number of clever minds, not only a few of them at only one single company

and more. That's a whole bunch of very good reasons to use it - and software from other Open Source projects, too.

All of these are not so with M$-Code, it's called Closed Source. M$ will never allow people to look at their code, for several reasons. One is that it's probably totally messed up, another one that it does things in the background M$ doesn't want other people to know about. The main reasons are though, that they regard it as their intellectual property and to be able to earn money with it in the future, they keep it to themselves.

For me, Windows is a very good desktop OS, so I use it for that purpose. IE for me is not a good software, so I don't use it.

I use IE 6 and Firefox...

Personally i prefer FireFox... the only problem is that it doesn't support all the things that IE does support...
many images can suddenly get somewhere else on the screen than where they are suppose to be.
I like the way that FireFox downloads files tho... really fast  *horns*

Also..i've heard that FireFox 2 will be released not too far away from now... i thought it was this summer and around (the Alpha version is already released)

One update that i've heard of is that mozzilla can block websites for everyone who is using the FireFox browser. now that can become handy. So weird sites where you can download virussen from can be blocked by mozzilla itself.. pretty sweet if you ask me  8)

That is usually down to bad web design (probably 9 times out of 10). Lots of developers design thier page, check it in IE, then publish with no thought whatsoever of how it will look/behave in other browsers.

True.. but how do you make a webpage FireFox-ready  ??? I do some web making on my own, but there are so many things that FireFox doesn't support that are essencial to get a good look on your page

For instace:
- When I make a webpage with DreamWeaver and add a layer i already have a problem... FireFox doesn't support layers...
- Also FireFox doesn't love Stylesheets (CSS) it works for most things but not the fonts. for one weird reason FireFox doesn't support the classes that you make in a stylesheet :-\ and also changes to the scrollbar don't work

These problems are really annoying me...

can someone give me a sollution to these questions? Hear me crying for help :P

Peter

And there we are, Frask: just stick to the standards! IIRC, not even HTML 4.0 has any section that describes modification of scroll bars. Just because M$ invented it, everyone now thinks they need it. And, please, just take a look at the css for this very page, it works like a charm in both browsers. As for JavaScript, this new Theme even uses Ajax, and it's all good in Firefox. Maybe you've been reading the wrong design guides up until today... :P

By the way, Dreamweaver.... isn't that one of the WYSISWYG editors? Couldn't ever get warm with those. Have you ever looked at the code they create? Mostly unreadable...

Hey Peter, your English is just so eloquent! I couldn't put it better myself.
Why is it a 'cool' web page has to have whistles, bells, 65 million unique colours...etc, etc, etc. Personally the prime requisit of a web page is...........that I can READ it! WHAT HAPPENED TO SIMPLICITY.......o.k. rant over.

QuoteFrask: just stick to the standards
Hahaha i always like to push myself  :P

QuoteJust because M$ invented it, everyone now thinks they need it.
Why not put it in a site? If it's possible to make changes to them than why not? it can make the site a lot more design-full. Just imagine that you have build a site with a black background. And suddenly when your page gets too long you have a long white bar on the right side...ok i admit that it's not nessecary to change it but i like it when the color matches the site his colors.

QuoteBy the way, Dreamweaver.... isn't that one of the WYSISWYG editors? Couldn't ever get warm with those. Have you ever looked at the code they create? Mostly unreadable...
Whahaha ;D yes indeed DreamWeaver creates a huge amount of code where are look at and think : "???"
For some reason.. it really works tho. And there are some parts that speak for itself and where you can make adjustments easely.

But it's not enough to know just DreamWeaver, you also have to understand most of the code that you make because DW can't do everything that you can do with just codes...

the main advantage that DW gives you is that you can make things that are just a "can't do" in just notepad or other design programs. I use it for making dynamic things in my site like mouse-overs/menu-over/behaviors.

to give you an indication... there is what DreamWeaver creates in an empty page when you make a simple Mouse-over effect:

<script type="text/JavaScript">
<!--
function MM_swapImgRestore() { //v3.0
  var i,x,a=document.MM_sr; for(i=0;a&&i<a.length&&(x=a[i])&&x.oSrc;i++) x.src=x.oSrc;
}

function MM_preloadImages() { //v3.0
  var d=document; if(d.images){ if(!d.MM_p) d.MM_p=new Array();
    var i,j=d.MM_p.length,a=MM_preloadImages.arguments; for(i=0; i<a.length; i++)
    if (a[i].indexOf("#")!=0){ d.MM_p[j]=new Image; d.MM_p[j++].src=a[i];}}
}

function MM_findObj(n, d) { //v4.01
  var p,i,x;  if(!d) d=document; if((p=n.indexOf("?"))>0&&parent.frames.length) {
    d=parent.frames[n.substring(p+1)].document; n=n.substring(0,p);}
  if(!(x=d[n])&&d.all) x=d.all[n]; for (i=0;!x&&i<d.forms.length;i++) x=d.forms[i][n];
  for(i=0;!x&&d.layers&&i<d.layers.length;i++) x=MM_findObj(n,d.layers[i].document);
  if(!x && d.getElementById) x=d.getElementById(n); return x;
}

function MM_swapImage() { //v3.0
  var i,j=0,x,a=MM_swapImage.arguments; document.MM_sr=new Array; for(i=0;i<(a.length-2);i+=3)
   if ((x=MM_findObj(a[i]))!=null){document.MM_sr[j++]=x; if(!x.oSrc) x.oSrc=x.src; x.src=a[i+2];}
}
//-->
</script>

Quotejust take a look at the css for this very page
I will...

QuoteMaybe you've been reading the wrong design guides up until today... Tongue
Hehe I don't read them at all actually  :P just trying out a program when you get it  :P and learning from my dad who knows a lot

QuotePersonally the prime requisit of a web page is...........that I can READ it!
Of course the main focus of a site must aways be to inform people of what they want to know. But the next step is.. How do i present that information? And that's where design comes by. The design of a page is not about "how can i install as many whistles, bells and colors on my site (nice example :P ) but about making a site easy to come in and easy to get what you want in a fast way. AND of course design is that it's nice to look at.

for short : The eye also wants some :p (a bad translation from Dutch :P)

No, actually not, cos the scrool bar belongs to the browser, not the site!

Actually, just take this code snippet, learn what it really does, and then use it in the pages you create. You might even modify or improve it. Nothing prevents you from using it in a 'real' editor :) WYSIWYG is a helper, and it gives you interesting hints.

The scrollbar was made by the browser. but it appears in your site. So the browser interferes with your site. of course you want this because it's helping you to make the site (creates ability to get up and down or going sideways) but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't adjust the bar in a way that matches the site itself.
You create the site... not your browser...

I don't thinkt that we are ever going to agree on this point  ;)

QuoteWYSIWYG is a helper
For me it is... but many proffesional web desginers use it all the time. Logic because it costs very little time and they don't care about the code. i like it to keep my code nice and clean tho. that way it's also easier to manage your stylesheet.  :)

I have never heard of the program actually. This is what i found online. It seems like a nice program. and the scripts really easy of you compare them to the weird things that DreamWeaver makes.

This link is the online version... but the downloadable version..is that one capeable of doing more?

btw: My website is now completly FireFox proof. I made a little adjustment and now it all works perfectly. next step: making a website (with 3 frames) resolution proof  *horns*
