Title: Great lyrics
Post by: Nicky007 on Mon, 2008-04-28, 16:46:14
Why do I always have to spoonfeed you, Paco  ;D

Here are some of the best Beatles lyrics, maybe not great by today's standards, but progressive by those days' standards.

Let It Be

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be,
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.

For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.

Let it be, let it be. Yeah
There will be an answer, let it be.

And when the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me,
Shine until tomorrow, let it be.

I wake up to the sound of music,
Mother Mary comes to me,
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.

Revolution 1

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world.
You tell me that it's evolution,
Well, you know
We all want to change the world.
But when you talk about destruction,
Don't you know that you can count me out. In.
Don't you know it's going to be all right,
all right, all right.
You say you got a real solution
Well, you know
We'd all love to see the plan.
You ask me for a contribution,
Well, you know
We all do what we can.
If you want money for people with minds that hate,
All I can tell you is brother you have to wait.
Don't you know it's going to be all right,
all right, all right.
You say you'll change a constitution
Well, you know
We'd all love to change your head.
You tell me it's the institution,
Well, you know
You better free your mind instead.

Across the Universe

Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup,
They slither while they pass, they slip away across the universe.
Pools of sorrow waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind,
Possessing and caressing me.

Jai Guru De Va Om
Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes,
They call me on and on across the universe,
Thoughts meander like a restless wind
Inside a letter box they
Tumble blindly as they make their way
Across the universe

Jai Guru De Va Om
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life are ringing
Through my open ears inciting and inviting me.
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns,
And calls me on and on across the universe

When I'm Sixty-Four

When I get older losing my hair,
Many years from now.
Will you still be sending me a Valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine.

If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door.
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

You'll be older too,
And if you say the word,
I could stay with you.

I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone.
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday morning go for a ride.

Doing the garden, digging the weeds,
Who could ask for more.
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

Every summer we can rent a cottage,
In the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save

Grandchildren on your knee
Vera Chuck & Dave
Send me a postcard, drop me a line,
Stating point of view

Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore.

And this one properly belongs in this thread.

It's a Bupie Special, but this time more apt  ;D

Don't Ever Cry, Just Remember

Music:  B. Allman, C. Ingles, G. Wehrkamp
Lyrics & Vocal Melodies:  C.Cadden-James

I must have stood for hours
The mist of dawn still rising
Brushing from my face
Cold tears of finally knowing
The world that we had twisted
The years of strength and glory
Were wicked and obscene
And there we stood so proud
What legends we must be
Really something to behold Lord
So irresponsible
With the powers of creation
A princess crowned in jewels
Robed in the finest cloth
Dauntlessly invincible
So perfect so unreal

In one great moment judgements fallen
Babylon no longer there
Gone are her streets her giant towers
Disappeared into thin air
Don't ever cry just remember

It must have been my mood
I'm usually much stronger now
I know there's just one way
And this is how it has to be
There was poison in our thoughts
And there was hatred in our eyes
Suddenly something came
Something made it right
We purged our hearts and souls
And we saw through children's eyes
Not stifled by the pain
Not blinded by our
Human nature don't you see at all
The wisdom of our suffering
The lies behind our ways
The reasons for the end

From the moment I was raptured
Babylonia disappeared
I now return here a survivor
The rest have vanished to thin air
Don't ever cry just remember

The wind blows cold tonight
No lamplights from no windows
I am sure enough alone
And I am sure enough alive
So through eternity
The gift of light gets passed along
to those of us who saw
What the rest could never see
Born to a fallen world
Longing for a morning star
Held on high
For me
As this vision comes to close
The last footsteps ever wonder here
They echo in my mind
Never to return

All is done and slowly fading
Babylon she once stood there
I walked her streets I climbed her mountains
I disappear into thin air
Don't ever cry just remember

OK guys,

Since you are both religious persons in your own different way, I let you meditate on those lyrics :

Centuries of backward ways, have many left behind us
Who can count the good men gone away
The fruits of all our labors have left us as we started
We've come too far to end it in a day
It seems that everything we do is wrong
A one way trip to nowhere all along
Just look around and tell me what you see
Another stupid page of history

(Chorus)
No one together, No one is touching ground
Look to each other, Chaos is all around
Same situation, Nothing is really new
No one together, No one is me and you

Lo the horn of plenty is bursting at the seam
The harvest of the world will be our prize
We claim to know the secrets, the answers have been found
But how can one fool make another wise
'Cause nothing's better than it used to be
To live and die is still a mystery
We take away and we give nothing back
We just consume it all and still we lack

(Chorus)

Each day passed by so quickly now
You can feel it drawing much closer now
The signs are in the faces of the people in the street
The signs are in the sound I hear
The voices filled with hate and fear
You can feel it drawing near you now

The multitudes are searching, and wandering in vain
For what they seek cannot be found in men
The truth that lies before us now is plain for all to see
To grow without is not to grow within
For in the promise is a victory
To see the way that everything should be
To feel the joy that we were meant to know
We should have realized so long ago

We're all together, Harmony will abound
Look at each other, All that was lost is found
New situation if our direction's true
We're all together, Everyone is me and you

OK, I give up, Paco. You don't like lyrics by Beatles, A.C.T, and DT, you prefer Contagion without the lyrics, now what the f* lyrics do you like ?  Give us some examples, and tell us why. Then maybe we can creep into the weird dungeons of the Paco-mind  ::)

Quote from: Nicky007 on Mon, 2008-04-28, 19:25:22OK, I give up, Paco. You don't like lyrics by Beatles, A.C.T, and DT

Wrong.

I like lyrics by A.C.T, I just don't think that most of them are really that clever (or 'prog' if you want). Some of them are actually quite good. And 'Last Epic' is really good. A nice story with good metaphors. But a lot of the songs have really silly lyrics. Lyrics I could write. :D

Dream Theater's lyrics are artistically very good, really. I just don't know what to make of some of them. With this I mean that to me it's not certain whether I should think of it as christian lyrics or not (they are very vague about that). Sometimes about things that are very close to what I think of 'wrong', but on the other side, there are still a lot of brilliant and beautiful lyrics by Dream Theater which bring consolation or encouragement.

DT is an odd one in my book. ;) I love 'em and I hate 'em.

Quote from: Nicky007 on Mon, 2008-04-28, 19:25:22you prefer Contagion without the lyrics
Not at all!! I just said that when you rip out the lyrics from Contagion, that the remains would still be prog.

I don't know. I'll get to you later on this one.

Here's an example of a lyric I really like:

A wise man once said
A flower is only
A sexual organ
Beauty is cruelty
And evolution
A wise man once said
that everything could be explained with mathematics
He had denied
His feminine side
Now where is the wisdom in that?

I came just as fast as I could
Through the dirty air
Of your neighbourhood
Your name on a grain of rice
Hangin' around my neck
And a head like lead

This is the 21st century
I heard everything they said
The Universe demystified
Chemicals for God
This is the 21st century
I heard everything they said

A wise man once wrote
That love is only
An ancient instinct
For reproduction
Natural selection
A wise man once said
That everything could be explained
And it's all in the brain

We lay on a velvet rug
by the open fire
She blew air on my eyelids
I cried "What's it all about?"
As she kissed my hair
She said "There, there.."

"This is the 21st century
I heard everything you said
The universe demystified
Astronomy instead
This is the 21st century
Can't you get it through your head
This ain't the way it was meant to be
Magic isn't dead
Come to bed
Come to bed

And rest your heavy head my love.."
And slowly, from above,
She showed the answer's something that can't be written down

This is the 21st century
Flash to crash and burn
Nobody's gonna give you anything
For nothing in return
There's a man up in a mirrored building
And he just bought the world

Would you want
To have kids
Growing up
Into what's left of this?

She shook her head,
She said "Can't you see?
The world is you
The world is me."

My favorite Toto song:

Toto - Wings Of Time

My faithful companion
I've lost my way once again
A prisoner of darkness
I let you down my friend

A heart left abandoned takes so long to heal its wounds
Your touch not forgotten
The end of the dream
It comes too soon
In this lonely room
Till I leave this world
Always know that

I will surrender my heart to the sky
Oh our love doesn't end here
It lives forever on the wings of time

The road that I travel
Don't know which way I should turn
Till I find the answer
Know that the fire within me will always burn

Angel of mercy, please
Why so much pain?
I cry for forgiveness
I'm the destitute man
Who still remains
It's so hard to explain
Till I leave this world
Always know that

I will surrender my heart to the sky
Oh our love doesn't end here
It lives forever on the wings of time

Sometimes I feel just like crying
I can't turn my back
All these years I've been trying
A vision of you keeps reappearing to me
You can't blame yourself
Just reach out your hand and believe

[Instrumental break]

We sail in dark waters
Lord give me some peace of mind
Temptation before me
Ahead lies the tower of truth that I must find
To you I will climb
Till I leave this cruel world far behind
Always know that

I will surrender my heart to the sky
Oh our love doesn't end here
It lives forever on the wings of time
[repeats 2x]

Yes Deenie. I really like this one.

For example this part:

Would you want to have kids growing up into what's left of this?
She shook her head, she said "Can't you see? The world is you, the world is me.

It makes me think that it's just the way you look at it. Indeed, the world is messed up pretty badly. And there's so much wrong things going on. You don't want your kids growing up into all this indeed. But the last sentence really struck me. WE can do something about it. Your kids don't grow up into that world as long as you'll make them grow up in your safe world. Kids need a safe place, and what's more safe than the love of your parents. Be there for them.

Man I love that part. It's so in contrast with whatever is on the radio.

Ah, yes... thanks for pointing that out. I came to think of a conversation I once had with someone about it, a bit offhanded, but this one's reply really hit me:

We talked about my son, and what a fine kid he is (we would, wouldn't we?) I said, "I wonder at times if it's right to bring such a good kid into a world like this."

He replied: "This world needs good kids, more than ever."

Now, that... is deep.

Just one of the lyrics i really like:

Queensrýche - The Mission

Music and Lyrics by Chris DeGarmo

'In the wooden chair
Beside my window
I wear a face born in the falling rain
I talk to shadows from a lonely candle
Recite the phrases from the wall
I can't explain this Holy pain

Six days ago my life had taken a tumble
The orders came from high above they say
A need to use me once again they've got my number
Further the cause boy yes you know the game

I'll wait here for days longer
Till the sister comes to wash my sins away
She is the lady that can ease my sorrow
She brings the only friend
That helps me find my way

I search the past back to a time
When I was younger
A target for the new society
Picked to displace the leaders
Countering objectives
Of this new underground reality

Waiting for days longer
'til sister comes to wash my sins away
She is the lady that can ease my sorrow
My love for her
Will help me find my way

My mission saved the world
And I stood proud
My mission changed the world
It turned my life around

I look around my room is filled with candles
Each one a story but they end the same
I'll hide away in here the law will never find me
The walls will tell the story of my pain

Waiting for days longer
Till sister comes to wash my sins away
She is the lady who can ease my sorrow
She sets the pace for my delivery of pain

They'll say my mission saved the world
And I stood proud
My mission changed the world
The underground will rise and
Save this world we'll all stand proud
Our mission changed the world, we'll change the world
We'll all stand proud'

Some of you already know it but it's a song from the classic album Operation:Mindcrime act I.  ;)

Here are some great lyrics by James LaBrie from the DT song Sacrificed Sons on Octavarium.

Sacrificed Sons

Walls are closing
Anxiously
Channel surfing
Frantically

Burning City
Smoke and fire
Planes we're certain
Faith inspired

No clues
A complete surprise
Who'll be
Coming home tonight

Heads all turning
Towards the sky
Towers crumble
Heroes die

Who would wish this on
On our people
And proclaim
That His will be done
Scriptures they heed have misled them
All praise their Sacrifice Sons

Teach them
What to think and feel
Your ways
So enlightening

Words they preach
I can't relate
If God's true Love
Are acts of Hate

God on High
Our mistakes
Will mankind be extinct?
There's no time to waste
Who serves the truth
For Heavens' sake

From Wikipedia - Sacrificed Sons:

"Sacrificed Sons is the seventh song from Dream Theater's album Octavarium. Written by vocalist James LaBrie (lyrics) and the entire band (music), the song is about the attacks on the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001.

The song starts with unintelligible chattering by foreigners, an effect which carried from the previous track, Never Enough. For the next minute or so, actual footage from the 9/11 newscasts are heard, which are broken up newscast by newscast by static noises, meant to represent the changing of channels; it is meant to emphasize the constant footage on every channel. The footage is then broken up by Jordan Rudess' haunting piano, in E minor. The lyrics by LaBrie describe the horror of the disaster, with lyrics including 'A complete surprise, who'll be coming home tonight' and 'Heads all turning towards the sky, towers crumble, heroes die'.

This song continues the trend of the Octavarium album; all eight songs are in a different minor key, starting at F minor. Sacrificed Sons is in E minor, and is the 7th song on the album. The first song, The Root of All Evil, is in F minor; the second song, The Answer Lies Within, is in G minor, and so on. The final song, Octavarium, is in F minor, to complete the octave."

To be honest, that lyric is good indeed, but not artistically clever or anything...

How about this one?

Roine Stolt - Dissonata

Smile - when you face suspect, corrupt, degenerate, merchants of melody
Smile - when you need respect, all you get is nails and poison from lizards tails
Smile - like the smart, sofisticate burnout sisters of hollow high harmonies
Smile - like the jester who knows what's expected, you smile in the face of your enemy
Fire - It's the sense of justice, the flame that light up the truth when time is done
Fire - at the mirrors edge, that reflect the conflict of a ruthless bussinesman
Fire - He can see a spark in the starless night of this cold and heartless town
Fire - So he can put it out, see them everywhere standing by to bring you down
Hope - when there's no place left in this wicked world for all of the decent men
Hope - You know all you get is a sad, sad feeling you're not going back again
Hope - You are miles ahead when you build a house and invite your enemy
Hope - For the living dead, in long time lost and dissolved democracy
Run for the power, run for the gold
Run from the fire, into the cold
Run for the diamonds, run from the dust
Run from the darkness into the dusk
Running for money, running for fame
Run from the devil, running insane
Run for the kingdom, run for the knife
Run for the living run for your life
Smile - I will rather be a King for a day than jerk for a lifetime, boy
Smile - You can count me out from silly games, cause I'm not your stupid toy
Smile - But you can not buy the experience of a lifetime in the sun
Smile - You're forever chained down the corridors where the blanks and restless run

Although I have no idea what's it about, I really like it.

By the way, for people who can read Dutch: I've made an analysis of Marillion's This Is The 21st Century.
You can read it on my Hyves page (http://pacohagenaars.hyves.nl/blog/11868729/Songtekst_analyse_deel_1_This_Is_The_21st_Century/j6P_/)...

It's not only an analysis, but also some kind of "my view on society".
In a song like that I can't ignore my own views. But H's view is somewhat the same, so it doesn't matter.

Hmm there's something i miss around here: Lyrics of an Arena song.  ;)

Here's one of my favourites:

Arena - Mea Culpa

"So here I am
Sitting on a pile of stones
Waiting for the rain to fall
To wash away the dust from my hands
So here I am
Sitting on a pile of broken bones
Waiting for the sun to shine
Just to find my way to another day

I hear you call to me
But there's nothing I can do
I hear you call to me
But I can't help you

So here I am
Nothing more to give the world
Hoping for another chance
As I try to make a stand against the tide

And now I walk in fire
I see the flames are grower stronger, dancing higher
And voices from the blue
Their screams will not be silenced, as I stand accused
I look for mercy in their eyes
But only find despising gazes

So here I am
Wasted and torn apart
Waiting for the end to come
Release me from the guilt I've had to bear
So here I am
Sitting on a pile of broken hearts
Waiting for the end to come
And take away the burden of my fear

I hear you call to me
But there's nothing I can do
I hear you call to me
But I can't help you - But I can't help you
So here I am, sitting on a pile of stones..."

This is one of my fave lyrics - and songs:

Silent Rain

Words by Gary Hughes, performed by Ten

There was once a time long ago,
When true love drew man and woman together,
She was all he wanted to know,
And he swore that he would love her forever,
So the light fades the colours of life when it's gone,
Like a lost ship of dreams that failed to sail,
But to him she was more than just another fairy tale,
She became his reality unveiled.

Silent Rain,
You and I have shared the fears the night betrayed,
Through the eyes where love appeared but died in vain,
Torn open, bound together,
Silent Rain,
Even now you hide the tears, you light the way,
Through the darkness that remains,
A brand new day, dawns broken, now, forever,
Silent Rain.

Wait for me, one bright star away,
There we'll spend our timeless moments together,
What we built let no one replace,
There's a place here in my heart, child, forever,
If the light fades the colours of life when it's gone,
Like a lost ship of dreams that failed to sail,
We will prove we were more than just another fairy tale,
What we had was reality unveiled.

Silent Rain.

There was once a time long ago,
When true love drew man and woman together,
You were all I wanted to know,
And I swore that I would love you forever,
So the light fades the colours of life when it's gone,
Like a lost ship of dreams that failed to sail,
But to me you were more than just another fairy tale,
You became my reality unveiled.

Silent Rain.

Note the he & she  ==>  I and you.

"She was all he wanted to know" - isn't that the way it should be, guys ?

Deenie, my guess is that you're talking about the song It's A Ghetto by Buddy Lackey. Am I right ?

Great lyrics iac.

It's A Ghetto

Would you believe what's going down inside my brain
I don't believe you'd understand
Pay no mind to the ghetto man

I know the world is cold
Well that ain't nothin' strange
But the way you push me down
Well it's gettin' old
And I know it's never gonna change
Now I'm gonna start pushing back
Maybe that'll make you understand
You can't push down on a ghetto man

I think you'd finally understand
Once you had to be the ghetto man
It's a ghetto man

Well I've got more love than money
And I got more hope than fame
I'l like to buy the world from under you someday
And leave you sleeping in the rain
And eating from the drain

Maybe that will make you understand
Once you had to be the ghetto man
It's a ghetto man.

Although i'm more of a Peter-Gabriel-Era guy there are some Genesis songs preformed with Phil Collins that i really enjoy listening too.
One of them is Dreaming While You Sleep from the We Can't Dance album.
It's a song about a guy who gets so bloody tired while driving he hits a girl and instead of hit the breaks he drives away like a maniac in shock of what he's done.

Quite a good lyric and when you think of it quite shocking too.

Here it is:

In and out of darkness, in and out of sleep
trying to keep my hands upon the wheel.
Never saw the corner in the driving rain.
I never saw her step into the street.

Dreaming while you sleep
dreaming while you sleep
memories to keep
dreaming while you sleep

I can never understand what went thru my mind
I didn't stop to see what I had done.
Had to keep on driving deep into the night
the miles between would somehow put it right

Dreaming while you sleep
dreaming while you sleep
memories to keep
dreaming while you sleep

All my life you lie silently there
All my life in a world so unfair
All my life and only I'll know why
and it will live inside of me,
I will never be free all my life,
trapped in her memory all my life
Till the day that you open your eyes,
please open your eyes

Dreaming while you sleep
dreaming while you sleep

Heard it on the radio, saw it on TV,
but could I take my secret to the grave.
If I had another chance, would I do the same.
Would I still deny that it was me.

Dreaming while you sleep
dreaming while you sleep
Dreaming while you sleep,
Are you dreaming while you sleep?

All my life I'll be haunted by
all my life just one moment in time
all my life until the day I die
and it will live inside of me
Oh I will never be free all my life
trapped in her memory all my life
Till the day that you open your eyes

All of my life - you lie silently there
All my life - in a world so unfair
All my life - and only I know why
And it will live inside of me
I will never be free all my life
Trapped in her memory - all my life
Till the day that you open your eyes.

All of my life.
Just one moment of time, all my life.

On a footnote:

That's why guys and girls: NEVER ever drink and drive!  >:(

Lazarus

Words by Steven Wilson

As the cheerless towns pass my window
I can see a washed out moon through the fog
And then a voice inside my head, breaks the analogue
And says

"Follow me down to the valley below You know
Moonlight is bleeding from out of your soul"

I survived against the will of my twisted folk
But in the deafness of my world the silence broke
And said

"Follow me down to the valley below You know
Moonlight is bleeding from out of your soul"

"My David don't you worry
This cold world is not for you
So rest your head upon me
I have strength to carry you"

(Ghosts of the twenties rising Golden summers just holding you)

"Follow me down to the valley below You know
Moonlight is bleeding from out of your soul
Come to us, Lazarus
It's time for you to go"

A.B. JUST NUISANCE http://www.simonstown.com/tourism/nuisance/nuisance.htm

Drunk in charge of an ocean barge
Giving it large 'round the old shipyards
Of Simonstown
Seven bell liberty R'NR
Salary shot in an all-night bar
In 15 rounds
4 AM got to get on a train
Sea-legs don't work, can't remember my name
I've run aground
If I'm listed as late I'll be hauling keel
Painting the grass or potato peel
Must find the hound

--------------------

I'll guide you to the station
Wake you at your destination
All that I ask is three squares and a bed
Listen to your drunken stories
Revel in your made-up glories
Carry you home
Tuck you in
Nurse your head

And on parade at daybreak
I'll make sure we're turned-out ship-shape
Caps squared away and with spring in our step
And when they call "Stand Easy"
As the last notes of Reveille
Sound
I am a happy hound
And with my duty done

I'm making sail for home
Where there's warmth and a bone
I can hear my friends calling my name
If you're still hearing me
In the wind through the trees
And the rustling leaves
I'm alive and I'm still running free........

--------------------

And believe we shall be reunited in time
Reunited to run once again
Across the field out the back
Through the gate, down the track
Through the meadows and trees
And the rustling leaves
Where I'm home...........

Van Der Graaf Generator - Scorched Earth

Lyrics by Peter Hammill

Just one crazy moment while the dice are cast,
he looks into the future and remembers what is past,
wonders what he's doing on this battlefield,
shrugs to his shadow, impatient, too proud yet to kneel.

In his wake he leaves scorched earth and work in vain;
smoke drifts up behind him - he is free again,
free to run before the onslaught of a deadly foe,
leaving nothing fit for pillage, hardly leaving home.
It's far too late to turn, unless it's to stone.
Charging madly forward, tracks across the snow;
wind screams madness to him, ever on he goes,
leaving spoor to mark his passage, trace his weary climb.
Cross the moor and make the headland -
stumbling, wayward, blind.
In the end his footprints extend as one single line.

This latest exponent of heresy is goaded into an attack,
persuaded to charge at his enemy.
Too late, he knows it is,
too late now to turn back, too soon by far to falter.
The past sits uneasily at his rear,
he's walking right into the trap,
surrounded, but striving through will and fear.
Ahead of him he knows there waits an ambuscade
but the dice slip through his fingers
and he's living from day to day,
carrying his world around upon his back,
leaving nothing behind but the tell-tale of his track.

He will not be hostage, he will not be slave,
no snare of past can trap him, though the future may.
Still he runs and burns behind him in advanced retreat;
still his life remains unfettered - he denies defeat.
It's far too late to turn, unless it's to stone.
Leave the past to burn - at least that's been his own.

Scorched earth, that's all that's left when he's done;
holding nothing but beholden to no-one,
claiming nothing, out of no false pride, he survives.
Snow tracks are all that's left to be seen
of a man who entered the course of a dream,
claiming nothing but the life he's known
- this, at least, has been his own.

Especially love the bit In the end his footprints extend as one single line, it's so evoking, you immediately see this wide landscape with a long line of footprints disappearing in the horizon. Can you escape and free yourself from your past?

Oh, alright then...

Van Der Graaf - Last Frame

Lyrics by Peter Hammill

Pretty keen, yes, my hobby keeps me busy.
And if I talk to myself, well, that's not a crime.
In the darkroom I am a dealer in space and time.
When all memory has mellowed,
when the photograph is yellowed,
still it never lies.

There you are, your eyes laced with secret pleasure,
saying that you're on the way to change,
devouring in inordinate measure,
every diversion that's arranged.
For every appetite, a cruel attraction,
but there's a panic in your action.
Oh, I never saw you look so strange.

Fixing memory chemically,
holding time on the stop-clock,
hanging back from that last frame,
just in case it didn't show you,
in the way I used to know you.
Oh, I thought you'd always stay the same.

Oh, the red light, the silver, the black and the bromide.
Oh, the silence, the waiting for overview.
The past seems under-exposed, low tide,
but still the images ghost through.
And you're there in the bath,
which is all this has led to,
and I can't say your path,
is a right one to choose,
but then I only have a negative of you...

Needs to be heard, as ever, rather than read.  Especially for the haunting & creepy violin at the start, and the way it tails off with 'I only have a negative of you'.

Excellent stuff.  I've got a couple of books of Hammill's lyrics somewhere...

Variation on a theme ;D

Marillion - A Collection

Lyrics: Helmer

I've got a photograph
I took a picture of you
I took your picture in front of my favourite view
You play the part so well
You look so sure and free
No one could ever tell that you belong to me

And 'cause you lie so well
I've got to pin you down
Under lock and key
So you will always be in my collection

If you can't speak you can't lie
If you can't run, you can't hide
I know a place you can't die
So no one lives inside
My collection

I want to capture you
I want to immortalise
The way you play with your hair
The way you flash your eyes

I taste the air you breathe
I taste the food you eat
I keep your nails and hair
And some of the clothes you wear

If you can't speak you can't lie
If you can't run, you can't hide
And if you're dead you can't die
So no one lives inside
No one lives inside my collection

I've got some photographs
I'd like to show them to you
Though you don't know the girls
You'll recognise the view..

Steve Hogarth:
A song about souvenirs... John Helmer had a friend who was in the habit of photographing his girlfriends at a certain favourite location. Every girlfriend he'd had in his life had been innocently lured to this same spot, unaware that she was to become part of a series of similar snapshots. The photographs were assembled in an album, which he would peruse from time to time in secret. Well, it's not illegal... but it's not entirely wholesome either. John was inspired! He wrote this lyric which explores the desire to capture and to possess someone at a moment in time - to keep them forever.
I was a little worried about it turning into something downright nasty so we tried to hang it on some sweet and naive-sounding music which makes the song sound pleasantly insane, without losing it's perverse undercurrent.

Yes, I know... "A collection" is my pet favourite example of John Helmer's superb lyrical ideas. He seems to have this wonderful knack for cool ideas to build lyrics around. Berlin... God, what a brilliant lyric.

I found this lyric I like very much it is:
Under Peruvian Skies from Dream Theater
about cruelty and evilness in the world

There, there it is
I swear he's gonna murder that poor kid
Wait, I hear it again
Don't turn on the lights until we
Hear the way it ends

Under Peruvian skies
Vanessa regretfully waits
The story unfolds in her eyes
Where midnight hysteria's
No big surprise
Battered and bruised
Always confusing
The love that she's losing for hate
Poor Vanessa
Poor, poor Vanessa

Hey, I hope you know
I'm taking all of this with me when I go
Shame, you're not to blame
I'm the monster you created
In your daddy's name

Under Peruvian skies
Vanessa regretfully waits
The story unfolds in her eyes
Where midnight hysteria's
No big surprise
Battered and bruised
Always confusing
The love that she's losing for hate
Poor Vanessa
Poor Vanessa

Terror by night
Liar by day
Telling her secrets
Won't take them away

Under Peruvian skies
Vanessa regretfully waits
The story unfolds in her eyes
Where midnight hysteria's
No big surprise
Battered and bruised
Always confusing
The love that she's losing for hate.

A great lyric of Fish.

View From The Hill from the album Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors

"You sit and htink that everything is coming up roses
But you can't see the weeds that entangle your feet
You can't see the wood for the trees 'cause the forest is burning
And you say it's the smoke in your eyes that's making you cry

They sold you the view from a hill
They told you that the view from the hill would be
Further than you have ever seen before
They sold you a view from a hill
They sold you a view from a hill

You were a dancer and a chancer, a poet and a fool
To the royalty of mayhem you were breaking all the rules
Your decadence outstanding, your hopes flying high
One eye looking over your shoulder, one eye on the hill
You used to say you were scared of heights - you said you got dizzy
You said you didn't like your feet being too far off the ground
But they said that up there you'd find the air would be clearer
Promised you more space to move and more room to breathe

They sold you a view from a hill
They told you that the view from the hill
Is further than you'd ever seen before

You were holding out forever - thought they'd never turn your mind
Your ideals they were higher than you ever could have climbed
We thought they couldn't buy you - that the price would be too high
That the riches there on offer they just wouldn't turn your eyes
But your conscience it was locked up in the prisons of your schemes
Your judgement it was blinded by your visions and your dreams
Praying and hoping that the view from the hill
Is wider than you've ever seen before
For the view from the hill we held our heads so high (smell the roses)
All the loved ones that you lied to are strangers left behind
All the ones that really mattered well you stood on as you climbed
You were holding out forever for your fathers and your peers
Holding out for everyone that ever walked in here
The edge was inside and you rode it all the way
You were playing the games that you learned yesterday
Hanging around like a fool with a name
You are holding your place for the view, the view from a hill

They sold you the view from a hill
Look it all for a view from a hill
And you find the view's no further than you've seen before

They sold you the view from the hill
And you stood and took it all for the view from a hill
It's simply coming up roses"

Pain Of Salvation - Kingdom Of Loss

"Someone sells us Toys in a cheap cartoon
someone sells us Cars in the latest Bond
that's coming soon
someone sells us Trends through a sitcom star
someone sells Herself in a docu-soap
that goes too far
Life on sale
can someone please just tell me what happened?
I mean, first we pay for fastfood that will make us all fat and tired
so then we pay for elevators
so we won't have to climb the three stairs up to our aparents
then we buy freakin' StairMaster machines
so we can burn away while watching someone make real food on TV
now, if that doesn't make us winners I don't know what will
I bet we would hang ourselves, if the world would just cut us the slack
and now you think maybe you should see a shrink
help you feel alive again - yeah, that's a plan
just tell us who to pay
someone sells us Man in a White House speech
then Woman tightly pressed
between two bouncing breasts on a Baywatch beach
someone sells us Us everywhere I turn
then introducing Them
to earn stock points on our concern
all for sale
it's all for sale...
welcome down to planet Earth
please don't ask us what it's worth
you will notice that the world you found
is slightly tattered and worn down
someone sold us every stain
now if you wish to complain
there's an open spot at 6 pm
that's when Caucasia is listening
if you're tearing down my world
please just try to do it gently...
there is love inside
for a dream that has to die
see, it's really all about time and choice:
the fastfood saves us enough time to squeeze lunch in exactly when we want it
the elevators save us just a little more
and the StairMaster lets us choose exactly when to walk the stairs
time is so important these days
it's becoming a fucking disease
and I guess in a way it is
since it is bound to kill us all in the end
now with all the time and money we stash away on others' expense
I can only assume that the tickets to hell are really expensive
and for some reason
it's important to be first in line
someone sells us God in 2-for-1 with Shame
someone sells us War
and the marketing looks just the same
someone sells us Fear on TV each day
a shape for every taste
if the flavor's right we gladly pay
all on sale
we're all on sale...
welcome to the only Earth
please enjoy your only birth
you will learn to take more than you give
buying scars we must live with
someone sold us every scar
they somehow made us what we are
we all want that spot at 6 pm
but no one is really listening
no
not anymore
we're all too busy
buying Sex
buying War
oh
buying Self Confidence
Security
Insurance Plans
just buying More & More
as you're tearing down my world
please just try to do it gently...
(there's still love inside for the dream that had to die)
as you're tearing down our world.."

Makes you think, doesn't it?

What I think, in addition to the obvious thoughts one might get from this well written piece about modern living, is that it doesn't strike me as much of a lyric, really. It comes across more as a blog entry with a hint of lyrical approach. It might be just some new style I don't understand. I've got nothing else against it than the use of plain black on white language that isn't anywhere near poetry.

This part here, for instance, might be a word perfect transcript from a statement uttered by a man talking to his friends 'round a coffee table:

I mean, first we pay for fastfood that will make us all fat and tired
so then we pay for elevators
so we won't have to climb the three stairs up to our apartments
then we buy freakin' StairMaster machines
so we can burn away while watching someone make real food on TV

I find myself wondering how you sing such a thing.

But, then again, there are several passages I find reads well, and what is said is essentially very cool. Could be it's all my loss if I can't connect with the style.

SPOCK'S BEARD - All That's Left
(Spock's Beard, 2006)

In dreams I reach to touch your perfect face again
In dreams you never cry or walk away
But I wake to the truth, the daylight streaming in
I never found the way or words to make you stay

Photographs and falling leaves
Scattered dust of memories
The poems I wrote I still believe
That's all that's left of you and me

I found a flower in a book you hid away
In better days they seem so long ago
I tried to touch it but it crumbled in my hand
Just like a future planned that we would never know

Photographs and falling leaves
Scattered dust of memories
The poems I wrote I still believe
That's all that's left of you and me

Echoes of a better time
Ring forever in my mind
Where I'm going where I've been
Different places in the end

Photographs and falling leaves
Scattered dust of memories
The poems I wrote I still believe
That's all that's left of you and me

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firstly, the song itself is of course really beautiful. But the lyrics are also very strong.
About someone who's relationship has ended and he can't forget her.
It really affects me.
Especially this part:

"I found a flower in a book you hid away
In better days they seem so long ago
I tried to touch it but it crumbled in my hand
Just like a future planned that we would never know"

Looking back on that relationship, when everything looked fine and everything seems obvious and logical.
You're planning your future, a future you were looking forward to and was sure it would be like that.
But suddenly, it's not that self-evident anymore and that future that you thought was yours, is now gone.
Or worse: the idea that someone else might get it...

The song makes me think that it's about me... :(

Considering your age, PH, it's not granted that you won't have to endure this kind of feeling several times ...  :-X

On the other hand, change has his good aspects too  :)

Wish You Were Here

So, so you think you can tell heaven from hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Wish You Were Here

Yeah. Great one Nicky! *horns*

The following lyric has been very close to me since I first heard it some years ago. It still sends shivers down my spine.

Anathema - Are You There?

Are you there?
Is it wonderful to know
All the ghosts...
All the ghosts...
Freak my selfish out
My mind is happy
Need to learn to let it go
I know you'd do no harm to me

But since you've been gone I've been lost inside
Tried and failed as we walked by the riverside
And I wish you could see the love in her eyes
The best friend that eluded you lost in time
Burned alive in the heat of a grieving mind

But what can I say now?
It couldn't be more wrong
Cos there's no one there
Unmistakably lost and without a care
Did we lose all the love that we could have shared
And its wearing me down
And its turning me round
And I can't find a way
Now to find it out
Where are you when I need you...

Are you there?

One of the best lyrics Marillion has ever written, even with Fish still in the band, is without a doubt:

Living With The Big Lie

"It all began with the bright light
The bright light and the noise
The chaos of the senses and the scream of desire

Touching and being touched
A million loose ends to tie up
Ticking of the clock and the cradle rock

The colours stand still
And then they move around
Comin' in and out of focus upside down

Empty winter trees
How space feels
Love of the soft ... the flowers and the sky

One fine day
The chaos subsides
Bleeds into awareness
And a lifetime of surprise

The beauty of your mothers eyes
The pain when you fall
You drink it in and marvel at it all
But you never really figure it out

You get used to it

The babble of the family
And the dumb TV
Roar of the traffic and the thunder of jets

Chemicals in the water
Drugs in the food
The heat of the kitchen and the beat of the system

The attitude of authority
The laws and the rules
Hit me square in the face, first morning at school

The heroes and the zeroes
The first love of my life
When to kiss and to kick and to keep your head down
When they're choosing the sides

I was never any good at it
I was terrified most of the time
I never got over it

I got used to it

Alone in the city at seventeen
With the hollow and the lonely
The drowning and the drowned
I was made to feel worthless
The wretched and the mean
Beat me up like a weapon I can't run away from or find a way round

Holdin' on, holdin' on

The greed and the missiles
Exploding somewhere every day
Hideous dark secrets under the sea and in holes in the ground

The cold war's gone
But those bastards'll find us another one
They're here to protect you, don't you know?
So get used to it
Get used to it!

The clash of religions
And the loaded prayers
Information
The face of starvation and the state of the nation

The sense that it's useless
And the fear to try
Not believing the leaders, the media that feed us
Living with the big lie

You get used to it
Get used to it!
It's okay, I got used to it "

It gives me goosebumps all over when i hear it.  8) 8) 8)

One of the best lyrics Marillion has ever written, even with Fish still in the band, is without a doubt:

OK, now I understand what you mean, Måd. But it is ambiguous.

Just to make it clear:  The lyrics of Living With The Big Lie are by Steve Hogarth.

And that, my dear Nicky, i knew.  ;)

I never said that it wasn't from Steve or that it was by either Fish or John Helmer.
I just meant that it's better than everything Fish ever had written while he was in Marillion or both John and Steve.

Maybe i didn't made myself clear.  ;)

Don't quote Hogarth at me, I can't see to read my book if my tear ducts are working overtime. ;)  That bit about the stray dog in 'After Me' gets me every time.  :'( :'( :'(  B*st*rd! ;)

As you know, I am more on the Fish side of the Marillion's coin but every time I hear the lyrics below (and the music that goes along), I am deeply moved  :'(   I'll let you find out the title of the song (not a very hard task).

It's always a struggle
To let somebody go
It's a natural desire
To own your lover, I know

And you can screw a man down
Until he takes to drinking
He'll give you all of his money
You still won't know what he's thinking

Take me to the fantastic place
Keep the rest of my life away
Take me to the fantastic place
Keep the rest of my life away

Take me to the island
I'll watch the rain over your shoulder
The streetlights in the water
The moment outside of real life

Ooooohhhh yes! That's beautiful! The whole Marbles album is amazing.

Since we're already doing Marillion:

MARILLION - Don't Hurt Yourself
(Marbles, 2004)

There'll come a time when all of this is over
Something else will grow and take it's place
The brand new car: scrap metal in a junkyard
The children playing will grow up and leave home
Put it away this dream you can't stop dreaming
Put it away this anger and desire
The open road is infinitely hopeful
Take all those memories and throw them in the fire

And don't hurt yourself
Don't hurt yourself
Don't hurt yourself anymore

There's old man on a warm and sunny island
No job, no money, just a smile to call his own
Know what he says?
"The past will only haunt you.
Live for today. Each day's an open door

Don't hurt yourself
Don't hurt yourself
Don't hurt yourself anymore"

Nothing to lose is nothing to fight over
The shining stars!
They've seen it all before.

Don't hurt yourself
Don't hurt yourself
Don't hurt yourself anymore

Dust keeps coming. Rust keeps coming. Weeds keep growing. Seeds keep growing
Where you going?

Then what about this one?

Ocean Cloud

"He's seen too much of life
And there's no going back
The loneliness calls him
And the edge which must be sharpened
He's losing it. And he knows.
But there's a fighter in his mind and his body's tough
The years have been unkind but kind enough

The smell of the earth
It's his favourite smell
But he's somehow compelled to the stinging salt hell
To the place where he hurts and he's scared
And there's no one to tell
And no one who doesn't listen

"You can take all the boys and the girls in the world
And I'll trade them this morning for my sweet Ocean Cloud
I've seen too much of life
So the sea is my wife and a sweet Ocean Cloud is a mistress I'm allowed
for now."

"You can take all the boys and the girls in the world
I wouldn't trade them this morning for my sweet Ocean Cloud
I've seen too much of life
So the sea is my wife and a sweet ocean cloud is a mistress I'm allowed
for now."

"Only me and the sea
We will do as we please."

He remembers the day he was marched to the front
By the physical knuckle head teacher of games
?Look lads? he declared, "This boy's a cream puff
No guts and no muscles
No spine and no stuffing"
The whole schoolroom sniggered
And silently thanked God it wasn't them..

But time is revenge. All the bullies grow weak
And must live with faithless women who despise them
I'll be in Barbados in a couple of weeks
With a rum on the table and yarns by the yard
A story to tell and a story to save
..unless she changes her mind
I'll trade them this morning for my sweet Ocean Cloud
I've seen to much of life so the sea is my wife
And the sweet ocean clouds will look down on my boat tonight

The wind changed
I felt it run beneath my ear
Like silk drawn across my neck
A dream of your legs
Defying gravity in love

The medium wave
Brought signals here from far away
Your tender voice riding on the sea spray
Something in the air
For those who know the signs
Something in the air
A storm..

When I was alive
When I was alive
Don't wanna remember
When I was alive

Watch me watch me
Paint this picture
Stretchin Hurtin Cursin
Watch me
Takin it Takin it Takin it Takin it....
Watch me. Watch me. God above..

Between two planets
In between the points of light
Between two distant shorelines
Here am I

Between two planets
In the black daylight of space
Between two heavenly bodies
The invisible man.
Ripping out the radio
I want to be alone

"You can take all the boys and the girls in the world
I wouldn't trade them this morning for my sweet Ocean Cloud
I've seen too much of life
So the sea is my wife and a sweet Ocean Cloud is a mistress I'm allowed
I've seen too much of life
So the sea is my wife
And the sweet ocean clouds will look down on my bones tonight.."

The cherry on the pie.  8) 8) 8)

And the best thing is: i've seen them performing it live. 8)

Here's another great Hogarth lyric:

A Voice From The Past

A voice from the past
Entered my head today
Fresh and alive. Full of life, passion and pain.
A voice now past.
A beautiful soul. Gone, gone, gone.

Speaking clearly - clearer than the living
Talking perfect sense
Used to not being understood
While talking perfect sense to the next generation

Have we caught up yet?
Is it time?
I think it is.
Enough is enough
Enough is enough

A voice from the past
Entered my head today
Tiny child sighed in my ear.
Giving up breathing in
Over and out
Over and out
Taken by bad luck and the ill fortune of geography.

Common cold. Dirty water. HIV.
Common apathy. Common crime.
Perfect nonsense to the next generation

Dead yet alive
Dead yet alive
Gone but shouting anger
Gone but talking perfect sense

Have we caught up yet?
Is it time? Well I say it is. I say it is.
Deaf and dumbed-down
Enough is enough

Give me a smile. Hold out your hand.
I don't want your money
I don't want your land
Gimme a smile. Hold out your hand.
I don't want your money
I don't want your land
I want you to wake up and do
something strange
I want you to listen
I want you to feel someone else's pain
Someone else's pain
Someone else's pain
Someone else's pain.

Deaf and dumbed-down
Deaf and dumbed-down

A tap with clean water

To bump this topic ahead:

Playing Galleon inspired me to add this lyric of Three Colours.
A good song and ditto lyrics if you ask me.

Three Colours

"Welcome to this land and union
we all call the European community
welcome to this world
the world of open trade and global
networks for you and me
and then we raise the walls to
keep us safe and within

We are here, we here to make the choice
of the future we want to live
they are there, knocking on our doors
to freedom and to opinions that is free
but we close the doors to
keep us safe and within
and then we raise the walls

The market wants increase in economy
and the fishermen claims their share
the farmer protests for more benefits
and the drivers strike for a raise

The industry wants to move to east
where lower wages is bliss
the much wants more mentality
is the ultimate predominant dream
it's the same old song

The values we spoke of solidarity
are now words from a forgotten past
just mind your own egoistic vanity
in your soap TV false reality

Everyone got an opinion to state
in debates in every media form
what we really need
is translate words in to deeds
we have heard it all before
still the same old song

In the 40's we fought the Great War
young men lost their lives and souls
for our conviction of a better world
and to crush the evil hordes
the dark side was spreading their beliefs
of hatred and utopian dreams
dissidents and coloured had no room
a perfect world for a few

We put up the flag on the deadly shore
and we fought
we fought our way through the blood
and dirt to be free

We climbed the Omaha beach
it was a bloody way we had to reach
to free the occupied turf
to give democracy fresh new birth
when we came back from the war
we set out some grand new goals
to unite the euro lands
and together we all should stand

We put up the flag on this virgin land
and we took the first steps
of freedom on this friendly shore
no more war, no war
no war..."

Last Snows Of Winter

By Dave Thompson & Paul Uttley, on Bob Catley's soloalbum The Spirit Of Man

I sit here with my pictures of you
Memories from our past
Hoping that the pain will end at last

It only seems a moment ago
I heard you laugh so clear
I turn around to find there's no one here

Last snows of winter fall
They hide your footsteps from our door
And I just break down crying

Suddenly you're taken from me
And I'm lost without you now
Trying to find a way
To make it through the days somehow

Echoes from an empty room
We filled with hopes and schemes
All remain unopened endless dreams

I hear you in the summer breeze
You're the warmth of the sun
The ocean waves forever rolling on

Still pray for the reason why you had to die
The anger wells inside
And I just can't stop crying

Suddenly you're taken from me
And I'm lost without you now
Trying to find a way
To make it through the days somehow

It's so hard to carry on
But I know I must be strong
The love I shared with you
I know will see me through
A lifetime without you

Judgement Day

By Dave Thompson & Paul Uttley, on Bob Catley's soloalbum The Spirit Of Man

Can you see ahead
Hold close what's dear
Look forward Son confront your fears
The time has come
Thy will done
You've lived your life what's done is done

Can't turn around
Don't make a sound
Can't turn around

As darkness falls
In hallowed halls
To hear our fate
Will we live or die
From blackenend skies
Voices say this is our judgement day

Walk in the light
Don't stray too far
Nowhere to hide they know where you are
So keep your faith
Your conscience clear
With the grace of God who's always near

Can't turn around
Don't make a sound
Can't turn around

As darkness falls
In hallowed halls
To hear our fate
Will we live or die
From blackenend skies
Voices say this is our judgement day

No not what we do
Or do we take heed
Swallow our pride
Forsake our greed
To know deep inside
Hold close to our hearts
The truth is within
Right from the start

The trials of life
Lost in a dream
Is everything really what is seems
For this the path
Make no mistake
And look to God our souls to take

Excalibur

By Gary Hughes, on Once And Future King

Upon a Pagan land in darkness came
A black and heartless spawn of seed,
A cruel and wretched plague,
For in the mist of time a king lay slain
Anf left the vilest form of greed
With a crown to claim
They battle, heed no warning
Prattle as they feud their lives away
They drown in civil war; they bleed

And still your dreams chill the night
While the dead fill your head
Desperate scenes take the knife
Through your flesh to the bone
Such extremes shape this fight
Fire is fed; blood is shed
And the pleas to unite
Scream "Excalibur guide our way home"

A ray of hope emerging bright as day
Amidst the darkness hour, reveals
what is pre-ordained
To hold a sword of power the Gods have made
To temper lightning forged as steel
for its sacred blade
Strength, passion, hopes and glory
Balanced on the brink, no time to fail
This time the saviour must be real

And still your dreams chill the night
While the dead fill your head
Desperate scenes take the knife
Through your flesh to the bone
Such extremes shape this fight
Fire is fed; blood is shed
And the pleas to unite
Scream "Excalibur guide our way home"

There's a lot more in these lyrics than meets the eye:

Tranquillity's maze

By Skyfire, on album Skyfire://Spectral

Frustrated by the pace
that kills creativity
The evil within gives
anguish to the outside
Creating chaos that is
canalized on to others
Through time and space,
day and night
The darkness grows stronger,
suffocates the life

Slow down, analyze your thoughts
Act now, before you get caught
Slow down, analyze your thoughts
Act now, before you get caught

Wake up with a sense filled with pictures
It's hard for you to choose your path
Everything is a maze, a burden
that you have to bear
It's time to hunt for what is missing

Total darkness with blinders
before your eyes
You are spared the trouble to
see the misery
The sense of knowing that
something is wrong
Appears in every decision
you make

Caged by the grasp
that your subconscious has
taken on your sense
Echoing teasing laughters
that make you feel singled
out and hunted

Hard to find tranquillity
enough to fall asleep
Everything stands in
your way in the
path that you've chosen
Frustration about the time
that is lost
Your inner self becomes
a hell that spreads to the outside

Close To You

By Glenn Tipton & K.K. Downing

So many years that we were one
So many things we've done
The memories alive
But most of me has died

As I struggle with events
I'm offered words of strength
They do not comprehend
The passion we possessed

People tell me what to do
Tell me how I should get through
But they haven't got a clue
No-one else comes close to you

I see your eyes before they closed
They looked right inside my soul
And they asked me not to grieve
I tried but still I bleed

I wake up, I break up
I try hard to shake off
The desolation as it grows
As nothing else comes close

And as I stand here by the grave
And the wind calls out your name
I know that time could never heal
The emptiness I feel

People try to give me hope
Tell me how I should let go
But they'll never really know
'Cause there's nothing else comes close

I've been listening to the remaster of the Dire Straits album Love over Gold and while reading the lyrics, I had a good laugh on this particular lyric.

Hope you'll agree with me. ;)

Industrial Disease

Now warning lights are flashing down at Quality Control
Somebody threw a spanner, they threw him in the hole
There's rumors in the loading bay and anger in the town
Somebody blew the whistle and the walls came down

There's a meeting in the boardroom, they're trying to trace the smell
There's a leakin' in the washroom, there's a sneakin' personnel
Somewhere in the corridors someone was heard to sneeze
Goodness me, could this be industrial disease ?'

Caretaker was crucified for sleeping at his post
Refusing to be pacified, it's him they blame the most
Watchdog's got rabies, the foreman got the fleas
Everyone's concerned about industrial disease

There's panic on the switchboard, tongue is in knots
Some come out in sympathy, some come out in spots
Some blame the management, some the employees
Everybody knows it's the industrial disease

Yeah, now the work force is disgusted down tools and walks
Innocence is injured, experience just talks
Everyone seeks damages and everyone agrees
That these are classic symptoms of a monetary squeeze

On ITV and BBC they talk about the curse
Philosophy is useless, theology is worse
History boils over, there's an Economics freeze
Sociologists invent words that mean industrial disease

Doctor Parkinson declared, "I'm not surprised to see you here
You've got smokers cough from smoking
Brewer's droop from drinking beer
I don't know how you came to get the Bette Davis wheeze
But worst of all young man you've got industrial disease"

He wrote me a prescription he said, "You are depressed
I'm glad you came to see me to get this off your chest
Come back and see me later, next patient please
Send in another victim of industrial disease"

And I go down to speaker's corner, I'm a thunderstruck
They got free speech, tourists, police in trucks
Two men say they're Jesus, one of them must be wrong
There's a protest singer, he's singing a protest song, he says

They wanna have a war to keep their factories
They wanna have a war to keep us on our knees
They wanna have a war to stop us buying Japanese
They wanna have a war to stop industrial disease

They're pointing out the enemy to keep you deaf and blind
They wanna sap your energy, incarcerate your mind
Give you Rule Brittania, gassy beer, page three
Two weeks in Espania and Sunday striptease

Meanwhile the first Jesus says, "I'll cure it soon
Abolish Monday mornings and Friday afternoons"
The other one's out on hunger strike, he's dying by degrees
How come Jesus gets industrial disease?

And all of this in a minor 5.49 minutes.  ;D

This next bit is from the album of Steve Unruh's project, called Resistor.
It's a bit the Shadows-like prog-rock or heavy prog if you like and it's fun, really fun.
The album is filled with Zappadian-lyrics and this little tale that I'm about to present to you is not much different.

Bear with it, it's long but quite cheesy.
If you have the opportunity, then listen to the track, preferably in it's entirety because this track, The Land of No Groove, clocks at about 40 minutes!  *horns*

Here goes nothing...

Quote from: 'The Land of No Groove
© S. Unruh, F. Turner, R. Winslow, B. Farrands, Lyrics by Steve

[i. PROLOGUE]

This is the tale of the Land of No Groove
where music got stuck in a rut
and four daring travelers desperate to prove
an inkling that gilded their gut

that somewhere beyond all the drivel and fluff
blasting from megaphones high
there might be a land filled with spiffier stuff
it could be fiction, but they had to try

Get a good rest, at the dawn we're leaving
off to travel far away
set a compass for the far horizon
walk on - out toward the dusty plain

Barry and Francis and Robby and Steve
packed up their drums on a cart
With guitars on their backs, and their hearts on their sleeves
it was off to the lost land of art

Get a good rest, at the dawn we're leaving
off to travel far away
set a compass for the far horizon
walk on - out 'cross the dusty plain

--

So, get a good rest, at the dawn we're leaving
off to travel far away
set a compass for the far horizon
walk on – out 'cross the dusty plain

[ii. DUSTY PLAIN]

Walking the whole day, away from the din
like some ancient caravan crew
Tired by nightfall, they stopped at an Inn
but little did they have a clue

The Inn had a megaphone nailed to the wall
of the lobby where they had to dwell
blithely rebroadcasting drivel and fluff
Expanding the boundaries of hell!

So, get a good rest, at the dawn we're leaving
off to travel farther 'way
set a compass for the far horizon
walk on - out toward the jagged mountain

[iii. JAGGED MOUNTAIN]

Our band of travelers did not get the good rest they had hoped
Awakened repeatedly by radio chatter, and all-night disco music thumping through the lobby wall
But that was neither here nor there now; it was morning and they were at the base of the jagged mountain
daunting, yet with the promise of the great blue sky above

"Heave, ho"... they all pulled together and drug their uncooperative cart up the slope
No way would they leave their instruments behind (or the canvas tent they bought after the last night's experience)
As morning slowly turned to afternoon (and their legs into metaphorical gelatin)
a little white puff came floating by (a magical sight!), as they crossed above the cloud line

Tired-legged travelers were rising to the peak, weak, but still their spirits rose
like finally they had escaped... they were above it all
in the land beyond the megaphones and woes

The air was brisk, and just below, the sun lit the tops of puffy little clouds
"Terra Incognita" – maybe the lost land was found
When gradually, behind the peak, arising with each step... they spied an ugly metal spire (argh)
Boosting the signal, ubiquitous drivel had scaled these heights and was bringing them right back down

Cursed rebroadcasting antenna, I would smite thee!
...if only I had a hacksaw.
No lost land of art, just the backside of a mountain
Down... down... down.

[iv. LAND'S END]

Weary travelers tethered to a dream
feel the energy... ending
Down the mountainside, to this lonely beach
resolution out of reach

Now it's evident everywhere we go
only avarice follows
Blast the eminent megaphones on high
far above this tiny cry

Light up a candle, then blow the wish away
We come down defeated for another day
Lost at the land's end, lay to rest upon the shore
a dream forever more

Night was coming and so they built a fire
mind and body both tired
Weary travelers put their shoes away, and then
from the heart they played

Light up a candle, then blow the wish away
We come down defeated for another day
Lost at the land's end, lay to rest upon the shore
a dream forever more

[v. OFF TO SEA]

But the sun rose again the next day
and you can't keep a desperate dream at bay
They tore their tent into a sail, as persistent winds prevailed - Their cart they converted to a rickety raft
Rob had once sailed the sea (and none of the other three – but that was OK.... they set sail anyway)

[vi. SEA MONSTER BATTLE]

The breeze fell in a lull
The cart floated aimlessly on eerie, calm waters
Francis couldn't shake the feeling that something dangerous in the deep... was stirring

The ocean swelled, and the boat rocked
A creature started rising
Eyes of yellow, a tailfin green – and thirty feet of Sea Monster in between!

Rarrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!

Ancient, dragon-like eyes fixed on the helpless four
Terrified, Robbie and Steve froze in the creature's massive shadow
But Barry was trained in Eastern Meditation, & combined with the adrenaline, he experienced an odd clarity of focus
He assembled his drumkit and prepared to chase away the beast by unleashing a frenzied flurry of drum fills!

Barry vs. the Sea Monster!

Sea Monster/Drum solos: Steve/Barry

Raaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhh!

And as the waves subsided, the mighty Sea Monster looked upon them and said,
Simon: "Hey, your drummer's pretty good! Grab onto my tail, and I'll pull you to a secret island with a bunch of
cool musicians you can jam with."

[vii. THE ISLE APPEARS]

And as the monster towed them 'round
they raised their eyes and felt the sound
as out of the mist a mountain peak was rising

Simon: "Welcome to our secret isle of groove"
"I'm Simon, its protector, and you fellows four have proved
you've a part to play in my friends' favorite tunes
which they've practiced now for decades since their jam band got marooned
back in nineteen seventy-nine
oh, the times they were a changin'
mainland music became an assembly line
'til finally they saw no point to return, so
they settled here forever, where their songs ring out eternal

"their radios were all shut down
they formed their own live music town
and never wondered if the mainland missed them"

And as the raft was pulling in, Steve sensed the battle he must win, was
to convince this band to go back with them... and play the mainland

[vii. CONVINCING THE ISLANDERS]

Islanders: "Welcome to our island, we're so glad you're here"
"we have had no visitors, in over 30 years
Fire up the barbeque, we can grill some leeks
drink some cool papaya juice we've been ripening for weeks

"Your tiny raft looks suspicious – if you press your luck you might sink
so, you're stuck here. Have another drink.

"Come tomorrow morning, we'll give you the tour
visit the vegetable garden & get a taste of the local allure
Sail the coastline in our fancy boat
Simon kindly tows it, since our fuel ran out years ago
"Now go grab your guitar, man... bring those cymbals and drums
jam in 5/4 'til the morning comes

Food and music were stunning, as the red sun went down darkness fell on the isle!

Steve: "Listen close to what I tell you: Such a tragic tale of woe
Our home town's been taken over! Fluff and dreaded megaphones!

Islanders: "Sad, but not our problem, how things have devolved
"Mainland music is terrible... do you think that's something you'll solve?
Now do you get it - why we settled here?
Only groovy live music, and no mega-phonies to fear

Steve and Rob were confounded, Francis just shook his head. Simon suddenly said:

Simon: "What's the point of all the singing if deep down nobody cares?
"Pale platitudes, friends, to meaningless ends, if this next generation is destined to fend for themselves
Won't you help? Just one show?

Islanders: "All right, Simon. Bring the boat, let's go."

[ix. JOUNEY HOME]

Simon the Sea Monster's flippers were fleet, as the band played the evening sun down
His nautical knowledge was true and complete, and he knew of a port close to town

Sailing at twilight and on through the night, back to the Land of No Groove
They were tired but finally feeling all right, as the hope in their hearts was renewed

From the big quest, at the dawn returning
grand adventure far away
at the shoreline, now the sun is rising
sailing back to the tale's beginning

The band stepped ashore, waving goodbye to Simon. He was off to the sea... they, to lead a revolution

[x. GROOVE REVOLUTION*]

Storming home with a 16-piece band
waves of sound pouring out, sweeping over the land

Blasting out from the town's center square
the long lost groove moving through the air

Singin', "You can't stop it now, the music's taking over, people!"
Singin', "You can't fight it now, the Groove is gonna overthrow!

One by one the megaphones fell
from rooftops, retransmitters, distant hotels
The meaningless music that ruined the sound for a whole generation
was finally brought down!
Drivel got drowned out, feet started to move
then the crowd went contagious and danced to the groove, in the
RE – VO – LU – TION, 'cause
You Can't Fight The Music Taking Over People

Singin', "You can't stop it now, the music's takin' over, people!"
You can't fight it now, the groove is gonna overthrow!

Sing it, "You can't stop it now, the music's takin' over, people!"
You can't fight it now, THE GROOVE IS GONNA OVERTHROW!'

Well?

As you may or may not know, Swedish progmetal band Wolverine has released a new album, called Communication Lost.

I was anticipating this release for quite some time, especially since the last album, Still, was released in 2006.

One of the tracks on this album is Your Favourite War and it is trully a great song. One of the best I've heard this year, no lies.

Here are the lyrics:

Quote from: Wolverine
There's a war inside you
And I can't escape the ground
I'm losing my lifeline
Because you just can't face the truth

Your face deceives me
You tie me with your words
Fall on your own stones
But still it's my mistake

Forgive me... Forgive me for your sins...

I want to ease your pain
But you turn your head away
I found you in your rain
But you can't find me

This stupid game we're playing
You know we both will lose
Locking all your doors
No one gets in, no one gets out

Please release the rope that holds me
So I can reach your mind
There's something holding me
Oh, there's someone holding me

Forgive me... Forgive me for your words...

I want to ease your pain
But you turn your head away
I found you in your rain
But you can't find me
I want to ease your pain
But you turn your head away
I found you in your rain
But you can't find me

I want to ease your pain...
I found you in your rain...
I want to ease your pain...
I found you in your rain
But you can't find me...

And here's the video that goes along these lyrics.

Watch and be amazed.  8)

KEVIN GILBERT - Tea For One
(Thud, 1995)

Duncan was always cautious
Never the one to take a stand
Convinced to the bone
That he's happier alone
And to justify the part
Keeps a closely guarded heart

Standing amidst the subway
He spies the lady of his dreams
And catches her stare
Long enough to make him care
"Oh my Lord, if Beauty has a name
Then hers must be the same..."

Lights upon empty rooms
Home too soon, home too soon
Somewhere inside he burns
It looks like tea for one again
Looks like tea for one again
Again...

He sees her every day now
And each day he walks her to her door
But ever polite
He still sleeps alone at night
He keeps desire at bay
Afraid to change his way

Lights upon empty rooms
Home too soon, home too soon
Somewhere inside he burns
It looks like tea for one again
Looks like tea for one again
Looks like tea for one again
Again...

Grey Monday evening finds him
Making their usual stops alone
Where can she be?
He just had to go and see
And there's roses in his hand
For his new romantic plans

Caught in the pouring rain
He crouches beneath her awning
And there through the screen
Spies his lady of esteem
Not alone
And there's rapture on her face
Within a man's embrace.

Lights upon empty rooms
Home too soon, home too soon
Somewhere inside he burns
It looks like tea for one again

Lights upon empty rooms
Home too soon, home too soon
Somewhere inside he burns
It looks like tea for one again
Looks like tea for one again

Tea for one again
It's gonna be tea for one again

Another Wolverine!!

Pulse!
Also from Communication Lost. ;)

"Ou would hide a face of pain
Laugh at all the hurt before you
Nothing would cloud your smile
You were stronger than me

When she graced your life you changed
Past erased by a new-found presence
Walls that you once had built
Fell when she arrived

There came a beast, tore out your heart
Drained your blood while I watched
Before my eyes, you were destroyed
Left me there on my own

At times I did think you'd heal
When I saw the strength in your eyes
That glimpse would bring me hope
A beacon in the night
Soon hope would fade and you'd fall apart
Fallen angel of mine
Before our eyes, you were destroyed
Left us there on our own

Fell down, fell down
I reached out for your light
Failed to stay strong
As you let go of life

Not sure that time will heal
All the pain and hurt we suffered
Still, now is far from then
Nurtured by her laughter

Caged in your heart, striving to be
The beast will always haunt you
Wounds of the past shall bleed again
But you will heal by our side

Fell down, fell down
I reached out for your light
Failed to stay strong
As you let go of life
Failed to stay strong
But I will hold you now"

This is one of my favourites both musically and lyrically.

"On The Turning Away"

On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we won't understand
"Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away"
It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting it's shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud
On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerised as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night
No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away?

How about this

"The More We Live - Let Go"

You and I can change the world;
The more we live, the more we learn, the more we know.
From this moment on we share the world;
The more we give, the more we love, the more we grow.
The spirit of imagination can lead us through the dark;
The more we see, the more we try, the more we show.
The evidence of our confusion, life has left its mark;
The more we fear, the more we lie, the more we hide.

As we walk into tomorrow (Turning away from the path we know)
Holding the future with our hands (We carry the weight of the world we go)
It's up to you and I (We hold the key; we hold the answer)

All our thoughts of doubt and fear (We leave it all by one)
The more we live, the more we learn, the more we know.
For each of us the road is clear and life has just begun;
The more we give, the more we love, the more we grow.
It's time to ease the thoughts we set for ourselves;
The more we fear, the more we lie, the more we hide.
All we need is just to believe in ourselves;
We face the truth, we see it clear, with no disguise.

Cast away our doubt and sorrow (Turning away from the past we know)
The Universe and all can be (Showing the fate of the world we know)
Together you and I, we hold the key to all the answers (Let go)

Intervention

By André Andersen (mastermind of Royal Hunt)

Would you believe if I said that all what you know is gone?
Nightmare, which you never thought could come out of your
dream...
It's done, I tell you
Purposeless rage came down from the skies
Counting the end of your world - open your eyes.

Fire is eating your house, erasing the word "tomorrow"
Time's standing still and your mind is about to explode of
pain and sorrow
Help less and weak you look at the skies.
Horror of capital crime's in front of your eyes.

Wishes and hopes in the mud, under their boots, are fading
away

Leaving you out in the cold - lost and alone, unwilling
making nightmares and fears
To something you feel - like they're real
Pieces of led for your life - it's part of the deal

Out in the rain, here I am, down on my knees for you, father
Tell me just what have we done one to another
Out in the rain, here I am, praying and begging you, father
Look what you're letting us do one to another

God, how can you let me see...
My eyes are tired of watching betrayal and lies
Up there, beware - we build the cross you were once forced
to bare.
Quiet and cold you look from the skies.
We are your tragic mistake - so open your eyes.

- not to mention the music  *horns*

Echolyn - The End Is Beautiful

Lyrics by Ray Weston

At first the attraction was innocent
I wasn't looking for a friend
It didn't take that long to poison her
She fell hard

Pain introduced us
I wanted someone I could hurt

Follow the trail of bottles and cigarettes
That leads to the hole that's in her chest
I said some things I never should have thought
I made her cry again

Pain introduced us
I wanted someone I could hurt

Drive in circles
Wait for the words
How to tell her
She's not the one

How do I tell her the end is beautiful?

Never meant for things to go this far
But love hears what it wants
Pull a blanket over yesterday
Let someone else find it

Pain introduced us
I wanted someone I could hurt
Pain introduced us
I wanted someone I could hurt

I made her hate enough to kill
Doesn't make it right
I made her hate enough to kill
Doesn't make it right
Doesn't make it right
Doesn't make it right

How do I tell her the end is beautiful?

I've been listening to the remaster of the Dire Straits album Love over Gold and while reading the lyrics, I had a good laugh on this particular lyric.

Hope you'll agree with me. ;)

~Headspace - Soldier ~

"When I return, I'll be a soldier
I'm simply living in this army holding
There's nothing to fear, except the war I hear
and civilians in their combat clothing
But there is no answer when you ask where it's all leading
There must be something we can say or do
Who can belong inside an army town
when we're all fighting to get out of here?

When I return and I'm much older,
I...I often wonder, will the...the war be over?
And how will I feel that I was sent to kill
with decisions I have no control of?
There is no answer when you ask where it's all leading
There must be something we can say or do
Who can belong inside an army town
when we're all fighting to get out of here?
Out of here

When I return and it's all over,
I...I hope you'll carry me upon your shoulder
and walk up the hill beneath the cannon,
and lay my body down with...with my companions
There is no answer when you ask where it's all leading
There must be something we can say or do"

~ Demians - Porcelain ~

"Show me what
I have been missing
All this time
Echoes were right
Only thinking about yourself
Pixilate
Show me the way

Through the blue

Throwing stones
In your house of glass
Roll the dice
Echoes were right
Only thinking about yourself
Pixilate
Show me the way

Say what you're really
Looking for
And everything you ever
Wanted
When what you're really looking for
Breaks before your
Very eyes

Say you're really looking for
Everything you ever
Wanted
What you're really looking for
Breaks before your
Very eyes"

~ Demians - Unspoken ~

"sometimes... so strange... cut up the pain
some things... arrange... always the same
come into the scene... closer... and please smile

again
come for a walk... together... in this wasteland

these comforting words i'd want you to hear...
i'm only dreaming

this is the moment i was waiting for
i was burning to welcome you into my world
so tired of crossing your path once more
i thought we'd walk the same way after all

the words are yet to come,
and still i feel like silence is meaning so

much more
to tell you what's unspoken but remains inside
i feel so quiet i will rise

sometimes... so strange... cut up the pain
these comforting words i'd want you to say..
i'm only craving

in this dream i never had before
the warmth filling me makes me crave for more
the space between us doesn't matter
within this time we spent together

the words are yet to come...
and still i feel like silence is meaning so

much more
to tell you what's unspoken but remains inside
i feel so quiet i will rise

tonight... you just... cut up the pain
nothing will ever be the same
i'll leave... the scene.. but please smile again
thanks for the walk... together... we'll meet

again..."

Follow Me

By André Andersen (Royal Hunt)

If pictures could talk there'd be too many voices
If sorrow could scream I'd be deaf in a day
I beg my memories to slowly fade away
Too many voices

If pain could've been seen there'd be too many faces
wherever I'd go, I'd rather be blind
And in the darkest night I'd loose my guiding light
but you I'll find even if I'm blind

Follow me, but I don't know where I'm going
Follow me down the road to something new
Follow me, there's no other way of knowing
what your heart is telling you

I'm planting my hopes and I harvest illusions
year after year, understood by a few
Sometimes it seems like I'm getting through to you
but it's just an illusion

I'm so afraid of loosing you
but there's nothing I can do
Nothing I can do but my heart is calling you -
follow me

~ Vanden Plas - Quicksilver ~

"We're searching for the meaning of it all
And finding trails on sand drifts formed of bones
A broken footstep filled with twilight
Can you find a way
Under Pathway finders lamplight
Talk to me - And say that we are leaving
Find a way - To the eternal town of ghosts

Fireflies shine so faint and fragile
Neonizing a town with their darklight
A lovecrafted vision
Of Shadowking's paradise
A city of wasted souls
Among the palace of the flies
Stay with me tonight holy parasite
Climb into the time - Searching heaven
I hear the revelation cry
Searching Jesus - Finding neverland

Sinking in your arms quicksilver moon
Hold me evermore
"The Seraphic Clockwork" tells the truth
In the psalms of Judas
On my way - I'm here to find you
On my way - And this feels like coming home

Fireflies shine so faint and fragile
Neonizing a town with their nonlight
These sacred poetics
Are darkminded auguries
Let the circle of tanakh
Revolve the old quixotic gear

I'm afraid to live not afraid to die
Now it's in my hands - saving heaven
I hear the premonition cry
"Finding Jesus" in a paper world

This serpent delta hides an island
Where ghosts have built a paperdome
Out of original predictions
Over the years they turned to stone
And soldiers gamble for a garment
They want to crucify His son
Inside of a manual "The Judas Revelation"
I read a prophecy that my yesterday will come
Stay with me tonight holy parasite
Wasted things to find here in aion
I hear the revelation cry
Searching Jesus - Finding neverland"

~ Genesis - Dream While You Sleep ~

"In and out of darkness, in and out of sleep
trying to keep my hands upon the wheel.
Never saw the corner in the driving rain.
I never saw her step into the street.

Dreaming while you sleep
dreaming while you sleep
memories to keep
dreaming while you sleep

I can never understand what went thru my mind
I didn't stop to see what I had done.
Had to keep on driving deep into the night
the miles between would somehow put it right

Dreaming while you sleep
dreaming while you sleep
memories to keep
dreaming while you sleep

All my life you lie silently there
All my life in a world so unfair
All my life and only I'll know why
and it will live inside of me,
I will never be free all my life,
trapped in her memory all my life
Till the day that you open your eyes,
please open your eyes

Dreaming while you sleep
dreaming while you sleep

Heard it on the radio, saw it on TV,
but could I take my secret to the grave.
If I had another chance, would I do the same.
Would I still deny that it was me.

Dreaming while you sleep
dreaming while you sleep
Dreaming while you sleep,
Are you dreaming while you sleep?

All my life I'll be haunted by
all my life just one moment in time
all my life until the day I die
and it will live inside of me
Oh I will never be free all my life
trapped in her memory all my life
Till the day that you open your eyes

All of my life - you lie silently there
All my life - in a world so unfair
All my life - and only I know why
And it will live inside of me
I will never be free all my life
Trapped in her memory - all my life
Till the day that you open your eyes.

All of my life.
Just one moment of time, all my life."

Sad story, really.
Kind of lyrics that hits you in the face.

Deep Purple ~ Perfect Strangers

"
Can you remember remember my name
As I flow through your life
A thousand oceans I have flown
And cold spirits of ice
All my life
I am the echo of your past

I am returning the echo of a point in time
Distant faces shine
A thousand warriors I have known
And laughing as the spirits appear
All your life
Shadows of another day

And if you hear me talking on the wind
You've got to understand
We must remain
Perfect Strangers

I know I must remain inside this silent
well of sorrow

A strand of silver hanging through the
sky
Touching more than you see
The voice of ages in your mind
Is aching with the dead of the night
Precious life (your tears are lost in
falling rain)

And if you hear me talking on the wind
You've got to understand
We must remain
Perfect Strangers"

Riverside ~ The Debth of Self-Delusion

"
I could be foreign forever to your otherland
I could be foreign forevermore to your promiseland
One life was great, but another...
No, I don't want to live on the edge
I won't follow you
I found my own
I will stay
I could be foreign forever to your hastenland
I could be foreign forevermore to your neverland
One little brick, then another,
And I will build that wall anyway
You can find me there,
Rested and calm, without mask
This is where I will stay

Look around where we are who we are
What we always want
Twenty-four, seven, three sixty-five
Sometimes little more
I was chasing your shadow,
Not knowing I'd become your slave

I could be foreign forever to your otherland
I could be foreign forevermore to your promiseland
One life was great, but another...
No, I don't want to live on the edge
I won't follow you
I found my own
I will stay
I could stay forevermore

I've said a farewell to never-ending smiles
I did not look good in red
From my place I can finally see
How much of this shade I called myself was me,
And what was left behind

I could be foreign forever to your otherland
I could be foreign forevermore to your promiseland
One life was great, but another...
No, I don't want to live on the edge
I won't follow you
I found my own
I will stay
I could stay forevermore

I've said a farewell to never-ending smiles
From my place I can finally see
How much of this shade I called myself was me,
And what was left behind"

I really like this track

Pain of Salvation - To the shoreline

I'm far from sober
And she's far from sane
But she takes my hand
And she pulls me away

She leads me down to the shoreline
She leads me down to the sea
She pulls me into the water
And then she whispers to me

Love, you known that I can make you stronger
Love, you know that I can make yiou brave
But there's one thing that you must remember,
That I am to far gone for you to save

Like sand through her fingers
The night slips away
She gave me her body
But never her name

I followed her to the shoreline
I'd follow her to the grave
To sinking ships in the darkness
And we are much to close to break away

And I know that she will make me stronger
And I know that she will make me see
And I know that she will make me hunger
But I don't know what more she'll do to me

And she said you know that I can make you stronger
Love, you know that I can make you brave
But there is one thing that you must remember
That I am to far gone for you to save

Marillion ~ Power (Sounds That Can't be Made 2012)

"You carry me around
Like loose change jingle-jangling
At the bottom of your bag
You don't seem to feel it though
As you swing down the street
Walking that unique birthday-candle glow

In broad daylight
In broad daylight

And you don't even know
The way I love you

You never knew power, did you?
You thought that power was in a strong arm
People pass the laws and gold
Tsunamis and mushroom clouds

Oh babe that's nothing

You think it's kind of sweet
The stammer and the tremble in my voice
But don't mistake it for weakness
Or some kind of incompleteness
'Cause round about now
I can feel it tingle-tangling
It's coiled up inside me
And it's ready to blow

You never knew power, did you?
Thought it fizzed in the overhead lines
Burning steel and bone to carbon
A Saturn-5 in a vertical climb

You never knew power, did you?
Thought it roared like Niagara Falls
Or melted stone under volcanoes
Earthquake, thunder, lightning, storms

The way I love you
Is something you don't understand

The way I love you
Took more than I could imagine, even now
You never knew power
All the time you felt so strong

But now you can't function
Awake or asleep
As the meaningless world falls away from your feet
And the Universe ceases its light-speed retreat
Life was sweet in the meteor shower
Of the star-high divine
When you sparkled and fell
From heaven to hell

And ten years grinding by in every hour
In every hour
I know all about power

Listen to the rain
You might feel a tremble
You might feel it"

Pink Floyd ~ Yet Another Movie

"One sound, one single sound
One kiss, one single kiss
A face outside the window pane
However did it come to this?
A man who ran, a child who cried
A girl who heard, a voice that lied
The sun that burned a fiery red
The vision of an empty bed
The use of force, he was so tough
She'll soon submit, she's had enough
The march of fate, the broken will
Someone is lying very still
He has laughed and he has cried
He has fought and he has died
He's just the same as all the rest
He's not the worst, he's not the best
And still this ceaseless murmuring
The babbling that I brook
The seas of faces, eyes upraised
The empty screen, the vacant look
A man in black on a snow white horse,
A pointless life has run its course,
The red rimmed eyes, the tears still run
As he fades into the setting sun"

Symphony X ~ Egypt

"Endless sands of Alnantees - etched in
gold, a city lost in time
and from the Sea - A Child speaks of
things unseen,
before the King - a teller of the Rhyme

Five align - hidden in the word a
message locked in time
find the Key - it draws the final line
between what is and what should never
be

Gaze in these eyes my child and see -
here by my side, you're destined to be
Fears in the night flee with the Sun - if
we are One
Kingdom of Gold I lay at your feet -
Ruler of Time and Space you will be
Rivers of Truth forever will run - if we
are One

From the ruins of Atlantis, the Lord of
Night rises from the sands
He seeks the one - his serpent's tail and
twisted tongue -
a bringer of War - Destroyer of the land

Five align - hidden in the word a
message locked in time
find the Key - it draws the final line
between what is and what should never
be

"Rise my minions - from within the deep
abyss
my disciples - thunder this necropolis"

Gaze in these eyes my child and see -
here by my side, you're destined to be
Fears in the night chasin the Sun - now
we are One
Kingdom of Gold now lay at my feet -
Ruler of Time and Space I will be
Rivers of Lies forever will run - now we
are One"

Robbie Robertson ~ Somewhere Down the Crazy River

QuoteYeah, I can see it now
The distant red neon shivered in the heat
I was feeling like a stranger in a strange land
You know where people play games with the night
God, it was too hot to sleep
I followed the sound of a jukebox coming from up the levee
All of a sudden I could hear somebody whistling
Fromright behind me
I turned around and she said
"Why do you always end up down at Nick's Cafe?"
I said "I don't know, the wind just kind of pushed me this way."
She said "Hang the rich."

Catch the blue train
To places never been before
Look for me
Somewhere down the crazy river
Somewhere down the crazy river
Catch the blue train
All the way to Kokomo
You can find me
Somewhere down the crazy river
Somewhere down the crazy river

Take a picture of this
The fields are empty, abandoned '59 Chevy
Laying in the back seat listening to Little Willie John
Yea, that's when time stood still
You know, I think I'm gonna go down to Madam X
And let her read my mind
She said "That Voodoo stuff don't do nothing for me."

I'm a man with a clear destination
I'm a man with a broad imagination
You fog the mind, you stir the soul
I can't find, ... no control

Catch the blue train
To places never been before
Look for me
Somewhere down the crazy river
Somewhere down the crazy river
Catch the blue train
All the way to Kokomo
You can find me
Somewhere down the crazy river
Somewhere down the crazy river

Wait, did you hear that
Oh this is sure stirring up some ghosts for me
She said "There's one thing you've got to learn
Is not to be afraid of it."
I said "No, I like it, I like it, it's good."
She said "You like it now
But you'll learn to love it later."

I been spellbound - falling in trances
I been spellbound - falling in trances
You give me shivers - chills and fever
I been spellbound - somewhere down the crazy river

And here's another!
Two for the price of one. ;)

Murray Head ~ One Night in Bangkok.

Quote
Bangkok, Oriental setting
And the city don't know that the city is getting
The creme de la creme of the chess world in a
Show with everything but Yul Brynner

Time flies doesn't seem a minute
Since the Tirolean spa had the chess boys in it
All change don't you know that when you
Play at this level there's no ordinary venue

It's Iceland or the Philippines or Hastings or
or this place!

One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
And if you're lucky then the god's a she
I can feel an angel sliding up to me

One town's very like another
When your head's down over your pieces, brother

It's a drag, it's a bore, it's really such a pity
To be looking at the board, not looking at the city

Whaddya mean? Ya seen one crowded, polluted, stinking town

Tea, girls, warm, sweet
Some are set up in the Somerset Maugham suite

Get Thai'd! You're talking to a tourist
Whose every move's among the purest
I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me

Siam's gonna be the witness
To the ultimate test of cerebral fitness
This grips me more than would a
Muddy old river or reclining Buddha

And thank God I'm only watching the game controlling it

I don't see you guys rating
The kind of mate I'm contemplating
I'd let you watch, I would invite you
But the queens we use would not excite you

So you better go back to your bars, your temples, your massage
parlours

One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
A little flesh, a little history
I can feel an angel sliding up to me

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me
