Thanx for your comments about IQ, kmorse and Moonloop. I will certainly check out the two albums before 'Dark Matter'.

Is that your first exposure to IQ? If so, grab "Subterranea" and "The Seventh House." If you like Arena, I think you'll like those two as much if not more than "Dark Matter."  "Ever" is pretty good, too. Stay away from the first one "Tales from the Lush Attic" unless you can get it really cheap. The second one is somewhat better but not all that good. Frankly, I'm surprised they had a contract after those first two albums. Thank goodness they stuck with it and turned into a really good band. There are a couple of others with a different singer. I'm not familiar with them, but I'm told they experimented with a more "pop" sound for a couple of albums.

S'trewth and Lorks a' Mussy...

As much as I rave about "Sound Quality", Tales From The Lush Attic, and The Wake are CLASSICS.

IQ were about to Re-Record "Tales..." when Cookie decided to leave the band, and start-up his own "Palmistry-n'-Whelk" business, North of the border. Plans for this have been affected...and rumour has it that the signs were there for all to see...Widge's lower mendial in the 19th house, just to the left of the Cusp Of Bimboss is apparently the reason...er, it sez 'ere.

But that, notwithstanding, go get Tales and Wake...IMMEDIATELY...and tell Widge that I sent you.

Failure to do otherwise may result in a compulsory trip dans le cosmic spin-dryer (see Xantuary's avatar)...and might also evoke The Walnut Whip...!

Gelert,

I just can't get past Nichols' vocals on those first two IQ albums. He did learn to sing -- sort of -- for the latter ones. I like a few tunes on "Wake." I'll have to give "Tales" another listen some day.

I am grateful to IQ for carrying the prog torch during the 1980s. Heaven knows there weren't many other bands doing it.

No, there weren't. I can only really think of Pendragon and Pallas that were around at the time (and of course The Enid, who have always existed  ;) )

Oops, shouldn't have forgotten about Twelfth Night. Quasar, yeah ok, haven't heard Haze or Liaison though  :-[

and yes, just what DID happen to Silmarillion  ;)  Seem to remember a slight name change, a handfull of classic albums and then they disowned the 'prog' tag and became continually failing Radiohead wannabies  ::)  Still buy the albums mind, if only so that I can whinge on forums about how sh**e they've become  ;)  :D

Great track from my favourite IQ album  ;D . Curiously, the intro sounds exactly like that of Led Zeppelin's "Rain Song" which by a staggering co-incidence is from "Houses of the Holy", the album I was playing in the post above yours  :o

In The Netherlands they say 'co-incidence doesn't exist'. That means: It was meant to be  ;D.
