Caligula's Horse - "Rise Radiant"
Soen - "Imperial"
VOLA - "Witness"

These artist are very much alike and I like them very much.
Other artists that come to mind when listening to these artists: Haken, Leprous, The Stranger, Wilderun. (Last two are not wellknown.)
Can someone tell me what are the common denominators in these bands? And are there any others that fit the same pattern?
Please tell me, I need to know, because I need more music like it! ;D

VOLA are great, I also really like them a lot. Straight Lines is currently one of my favorite tracks.

You surely have checked out the catalogue of Porcupine Tree, right...?
A bit more mainstream, but still absolutely fantastic and very unique Rock music, with (i.m.o.) no bad tracks on their albums: Alter Bridge. No other band like them, actually.
If you have Spotify and listen to a certain group of bands for a certain period of time, they will offer you peronsalized mixes, that include those groups, and others from similar tastes.
It's also good to create a playlist and allow Spotify to create radio from it, it's an option in the settings.

Btw. VOLA is making use of a genre called "Djent". Search for it.
Also look into Devin Townsend, maybe.
My son just shouted at me: tell him to listen to Loathe (the band).
Sleep Token also comes into my mind.
Delta Sleep.
Thornhill
Periphery
Wheel
Katatonia
Opeth
Animals as Leaders if you're into instrumental music.

Hi Peter, thanks for your extensive post!

Yeah it's really good! I bought their album "Witness" (with Straight Lines) after remembering listening (and liking) their "Applause Of A Distant Crowd" album. "Witness" is even better in my opinion. Still need to listen to "Inmazes".

Quote from: Peter on Mon, 2023-06-05, 23:08:28You surely have checked out the catalogue of Porcupine Tree, right...?

Yup! ;D A few years back already!
Glad that they're back, but wasn't really blown away by "Closure/Continuation". It's their only album that I did not buy yet. But it's not a bad album of course!
My favourite albums are "In Absentia", "Deadwing", "Fear Of A Blank Planet" and the "Nil Recurring" EP. But I also like their more psychedelic period ("The Sky Moves Sideways"!).
To be honest, I don't think they sound much like VOLA, Leprous, Haken, Caligula's Horse, etc.

Yes, you have mentioned them before. A friend of mine is also a fan. I'll look into it. Still, I doubt that they have what I am specifically looking for.

Yes I know. I use Spotify a lot, but their algorithm is limited. I much prefer human recommendations. :P

Quote from: Peter on Mon, 2023-06-05, 23:08:28Btw. VOLA is making use of a genre called "Djent". Search for it.

I really like Djent when it is combined with other genres/techniques. Leprous and indeed VOLA, but also all the other bands that I mentioned, use Djent in their music. But they mix their heavy riffs with catchy pop melodies. I don't like those Djent bands that just do Djent and Djent only. I think that gets very boring after some time.

Quote from: Peter on Mon, 2023-06-05, 23:08:28Also look into Devin Townsend, maybe.

Yes! Devin is somewhat in the same ballpark. His super clean wide range (even operatic) vocals are another element that I find in all those bands. Einar Solberg reminded me very much of Devin the first time I heard him.

Quote from: Peter on Mon, 2023-06-05, 23:08:28My son just shouted at me: tell him to listen to Loathe (the band).

Alright! I'll check them out. (Great to have a son like that!)

Thornhill
Don't know any of these. So I'll check them out.

Animals as Leaders if you're into instrumental music.

I know all these bands (I have almost every Opeth album!), and there are some elements that kind of touch on what I am looking for, but not quite.

It's hard to explain. I think it comes down to this:
- Beautiful clean singing voice, but able to do harsh vocals sometimes
- Heavy stuff
- 'Angular' rhythms and Djent
- Synth-y and '80's influenced', electronic
- Mainstream-ish without being cheap, like if you'd get rid of the above four criteria, it would be radio-friendly

I think the band Voyager might also fit in this category. Another one I recently discovered and am very excited about is Maraton (made me think of a metal version of A-ha and Talk Talk).
