hmmm, I found this post (http://shattered-room.net/index.php?topic=465.msg6219#msg6219), where JJII talks about the DVD plans. That was September 2005. Add 6 to 9 months for sighting and choosing material, production etc. and you get March to May 2006.
There was no news on the web site, the mailing list, the fan club or in here since then, also no word on InsideOut and SPV.
If this was to be true, it'd be really great, and I'd desperately like to know where they have the info from...

This will be a film of the Arena gig in Katowice that they played during the last tour.
There will be some interesting extra footage, including material from the gig in Holland which brought the Visitor line up back together.... as well as photos and interviews.
I believe the first thousand will be a limited edition with a CD soundtrack as well.

Which basically means that the DVD is produced by Metal Mind Productions in Poland and justforkicks have good connections to them, that's why it's already on their catalogue. Why they put 28.02. as release date, but Clive said late March I still can't say. I just asked him that in return, and I'm waiting for an answer now.

But that's also the case with the standard edition.
You know what? I would buy the limited edition anyway, even when they say they don't have it in stock. When they do, they'll send it over to you. When there's no limited edition left anymore, they automatically send you the standard edition I think.
But on the other hand, I have no experience with any of this. Try contacting Verglas or even Clive here. I don't know.

Yesterday I came back from a weekend-off and what a pleasant surprise: the DVD 'Smoke and Mirrors' had arrived. I have seen half the DVD and it's awesome! The live versions of the Pepper's Ghost tracks are fabulous. Tonight I'm going to watch the rest. 8)
Well, It popped through the door 15 miniutes ago and i'm now gonna put it on. I just have to say as a DVD/CD package this is just the most AWESOME thing I have ever seen! the whole package is just superb and at 16 quid an absolute bargain!
Man, it seems everybody here bought it...
I want it too, but I'll have to ask my dad first (for his creditcard) ;D.

Just wondering, has anyone noticed a slight problem with the sound being out of synch with the picture? Mick seemed to be hitting his drums about half a second after the beat. I tried it on 2 dvd players and my pc and it was the same on all of them :-\

I noticed it straight away - as soon as Mick counted in Bedlam Fayre, so I think it's quite apparent :-\

I was still noticing it on Solomon but it didn't seem as pronounced as at the beginning :)
Right.... I've just been checking this out.
It might be aproblem in the authoring part of the production, or iy could be a random pressing thing.
It seems to be out of sync by quite a few milliseconds (The sound track is running very slightly early).
Naturally it is more obvious when you watch the drums.
I have been in touch with Metal Mind, and we are looking into it now... we'll keep you informed
DVD can be a real pain to produce, and this one seems to be haunting us (just when I thought I'd seen the last of it...;)

Mine is the same, audio about 1/4 second ahead of the video, but I was able to forget it most of the time except when Mick was in shot, then it became really obvious, but given the overall quality of the package and audio quality and video quality and content and everthing i'm not bothered by it.

New to the forum, but a big fan of the band for many years. Joined the forum today to say that I've just watched the DVD and noticed the same sync problems on both the 5.1 and stereo soundtracks. I have two mid-range DVD players, both of which have no problems with any other DVDs and the sync problem is quite obvious, almost unwatchable. Have to say I noticed a similar problem with previous Arena DVD as well. I have just emailed MetalMind to see what they say... shame because it's a great performance!
PS...the weird thing is that the special features are perfectly IN sync...certainly an authoring problem I reckon... ???
Yes, I have noticed it too. But it's not that annoying, it's a great performance. I have a Pendragon DVD on which the problem is worse.
I've watched about a third so far & have to say its superb. I didn't really notice the sync problem. I think I was just enjoying it too much.

In my opinion the sync problem IS a big issue. It certainly takes focus away from the musical experience and that can't have been the intention... I was just about to return the DVD to the online store from where Í bought it, but I suppose there's no point in doing that as the problem seems global. Let's just hope that Clive & Co can do some difference with the producers. The show is too good to be stored off in the closet.

You *could* rip the streams from the DVD and hand-sync them with VirtualDub, but that's a real PITA. I wouldn't do it, even though I'd surely find out how to do it.... after hours....
I watched the DVD several times now and I couldn't recognize any sync-problems. ??? Even if there is a problem, it can't be that big that you can't enjoy the DVD anymore ::)

Not that much, actually, and only if you look veeeeery closely...
Well, none of my other DVD's have this problem so I'm still dissapointed :( And, yes, it's still quite noticable regardless of who the camera focuses on. Maybe I should have my copy traded anyway. If it's a burn-related problem, maybe some copies are worse than others. Keeping my fingers crossed..

Great to hear! I saw some of this footage by a friend of mine (John Vis is his name) and I begged Clive to add some of it. Fortunately there were some more recordings by different fans, who were willing to co-operate. Regrettably not all in the same format. One of them had an excellent soundtrack we used and we used two different camera's. John did an excellent job, espcecially when you realize that he had to put every different shot/angle in-sync by hand!!
I am very glad that I didn't hesitate asking him and Clive (sorry, if I was a pain in the ass boys), but I think we all really owe a lot to John's willingness to put so much effort in it and to Clive for his trust that it would work out. After all, it was 'just amateur footage', that wasn't intended to be used at all....
Well, I got my copy last friday, have seen it twice and...no syncro problems at all!!! :D (my wife was there, and she agrees ;))
It's a great job, great sound, great extras, great concert ... I'm really happy!!!

The quality of the audio and video are superb, just the issue of them not quite happening at the same time ::)
It seems to be several 100 milliseconds, and is noticable on the Rob's voice.
I've had my DVD for two weeks now and, yes, I have noticed the sight out of sync with the sound but whether it is a 'woman thing' I am not too put off by it. However, hubby is! Most vocally so! Good job I bought it for me to watch. Like others have said before me, it is not the worst example I have seen. But it is interesting to see that other girls/woman are less stressed about the whole thing then their men folk. Is it something to do with perception?
The point about any DVD being out of sync, is that it SHOULDN'T be. You pay your money and you expect the authoring to be correct. I can make DVDs using Nero software on my home PC and add new soundtracks and get them perfectly in sync dead easily, so I'm sure a professional company can. I have had DVDs made for the business I'm in and if one came back like Smoke & Mirrors, I'd have no hesitation in rejecting the whole batch. There are some DVD players that do suffer from lip sync problems, but by and large that problem has been rectified with the new generation of DVD players. It would seem that the time delay varies from DVD to DVD, but on mine (6 month old Philips) the picture is about half a beat in front of the audio, which is very frustrating more than anything and patently obvious with the drumming, but also quite clear with the guitar solos. I'm sure Clive is on the case and will (hopefully) get a new batch made and we can switch them...(??) Let's keep our fingers crossed for some news.
Just wanted to add that I have at last managed to watch the bonus footage of the re-union concert & its fab. I love this DVD!!!!!

My Smoke and Mirrors DVD came today and I've watched all the way through including bonus features and i find no problems whatsoever with it.
My say is that that DVD is really damn good!!!

If you have a copy that is out of sync there is now a solution!
Simply send your 'out of sync' "Disc Only" Not the packaging to:

Don't forget to supply a return address...
and Metal Mind will replace your copy with a new in-sync version.

I would like to clear up this Smoke & Mirrors DVD problem once and for all!
The DVD Limited and normal version was licensed to Metal Mind Records in Poland by Verglas Music this means that Metal Mind are responsible for the production of the DVD this is why you need to send your copy to them in Poland for exchange (if its not working as you would expect it to i.e. sound not in time with the vision) address can be found on verglas.com if you bought the DVD from Verglas.com you should have received a mail from me explaining who to contact to get a replacement. Please note this is a random problem and only applies to dvds sent out in April all other dvds are the new production and are fine this includes any bought in a uk shop. can't tell you about distribution in any other country because this is down to Metal mind but again if you have a problem with what you have bought send it back to them!
I would like to apologise for the inconvenience this has caused some of you............ its has been a right royal cock-up!

Ps to answer your question about "Tarqin" when John Mitchell first joined the band Paul Wrightson was still in Arena and he found out the John had gone to Eton (the Posh school in England) and (I'm generalising) you find a lot of Tarquins there!

Thanks Mick, I can only imagine how much a pain in the rear this has been for you guys. Nice that is is all sorted out now. My DVD will go back this week for replacement. It was in the first batch sent out, which explains now why some folks never noticed it.

There's a review of this DVD. It's not a very good review as I can read from the first paragraph, but I haven't read the whole article yet. Besides that, sometimes it's good to see the critics on a DVD or CD. Pro's and con's is better than only pro's or only con's (in some way), because sometimes you have some sort of 'fanboys' who think everything is good from their beloved artist, while there can be said enough other things about.
Of course, that's hardly the case with Arena, because they're just plain amazing. 'nuff said.

Hi, I got my replacement DVD back from Metal Mind in the post this morning. Can't wait to get it home and watch it properly this time.

So I got mine home last night and tried it. And you know what...? It still ain't spot on, but its MUCH MUCH better than before. That tell-tale first drum of Bedlam Fayre is still a miniscule amount AHEAD of the sound, but it is barely noticeable apart from the drumming..maybe on a couple of intricate guitar solos and fast keyboard solos you can detect it as well.
I can't believe its my kit...Sony Bravia V series 40" and Sony DVD Recorder (only a couple of months old) and nothing else is out of sync. But the picture and sound are great, particularly using progressive scan.
I blame the Poles.... :P

That's just because light travels faster than sound, try to sit closer to the screen :P

I got my replacement dvd too a few weeks ago and it definately is still out of sync. I think it may be my dvd player but most dvds seem to be fine except this one and also "Caught In The Act". However it doesnt spoil the viewing too much. It just gets a bit frustrating on the close ups of John and Micks playing.
Argh... that really sucks... So the problem still isn't solved...
I have seen my DVD and everything was alright... All in sync and the extra features were great!

Just one thing; when you're 'browsing' through the DVD, the music is playing and starts again everytime you click on something... really annoying I think.
Ahh well, it's the best Live Concert on DVD that I've got! ;D
