Guys, good news, I read an interview with Mikael Å in Sweden Rock:  They go into the studio end of January 2011 to make a new album  *horns*

Mikael said that they all are eager to make something entirely different from their earlier albums. That sounds real good in my ears  8)

Jens Bogren and Steve Wilson will join in  :)

Great news, especially since I've been so much into Opeth lately. *horns*

Teunis

I've read somewhere that there's no grunting on the new album and it is based on 70's prog. So I'll give it a chance this time  ;).

no grunting

For God's s*x, Teunis, grunt and growl are two different things, like pigs grunt, while dogs and Mikael Å growl  ;)

Hardehar, but the effect is the same :P

Not to me:  I listen to a lotta music with growl, hardly any with grunt. Grunt is over in the more outright death department, which I find boring  :-\

Just downloaded one of the songs (you can listen to it here: http://stereogum.com/766792/opeth-the-devils-orchard-stereogum-premiere/franchises/haunting-the-chapel/).

I was already put off by the cover art. I'm afraid I'm put off by the lyrics of this song.

Much as I like Opeth, I might have to skip this one.

After a first spin I have to say that I can imagine that some folks might be offended by the lyrics of this song but other than that, I personally think it's quite good.

Not the Opeth we know, but still.

Lots of bass!!!

I'll have to consider the lyrics in the context of the entire work. I didn't pick up everything that he was singing when I listened to it. I know that such themes are common in metal and even Opeth has at least flirted with them but the growling vocals often masked them to the point where they were not a factor and even when the lyrics were discernible, I just didn't find them offensive because they fit into some kind of story. The lyrics to this song perhaps fit into a story, too.

Other than that, the music was OK. It usually takes a few listens for me to get what Opeth is doing.

Yes, I already heard it.

It's ... different.

Take all that you know and have heard of Opeth and throw it in the thrash because this album is way, way, and another way different than their discography.

But...

I do like it.
In a weird way.

I'll write more later, but after two spins, I have to say it sounds more than a little like ....

Arena.

The Steven Wilson influence is very strong, too. Some say that if you listen to Wilson's new CD (Grace for Drowning, I think it's called) that it is like a companion piece to this one. I'll have to check that out.

Absolutely not!

Two absolute different pieces of pie. ;)
