Ok, a new poll, fresh smellin'!

Pick your favorite Instrumental song.
I didn't realise Arena had so many instrumentals (most of which are from the Crying For Help series)

Right then, 3 votes each, here we go! :)

Ah, nice. I'm the first one.  ;D

I chose for Crying For Help pt VIII. It's a great song with a "dramatic/grandiose" touch and it's a perfect "prologue" for Sirens, which is one of my favourite Arena songs.

Wow, this is a very hard question!!

But I think I know which to choose:

Isolation (The Cry)
I love acoustic guitars and this is a beautiful guitar solo piece. I believe Mitchell wrote it, and he did it very good. I like the theme played between 0:35 and 1:09 minutes. I think this song is the best instrumental part of early Arena.

On The Box (Contagion)
As soon as this kicks in it gives me goosebumps. And then the keyboardsolo starts. A very spooky track, as if it wants to say "be on your guards!". The guitar is also one of Mitchells bests I think. He did a bit Petrucciwork here and there but definately you can here it's Lil' Johnny playing here.

Confrontation (Contagium)
A very dark fade-in intro, and then the BEAUTIFUL acoustic (rhythm) guitars. This MUST be the BEST instrumental of Arena! Beautiful men-choir 'singing' at the background. And the organ is great too. The electric guitars houling and crying. The lenght of the track is amazing too. But I find myself begging for more when this song ends. #1

(I find acoustic guitars better than electric most of the time.)

just took the time to listen to all of these tracks, and for me the choice goes to:

Serenity, Riding the Tide and This Way Madness Lies. Just so.

Since I just put on Marillion's Misplaced Childhood, thsi will have to wait ;)

Serenity has got to me my favourite. Its one that i can listen to with my eyes closed and not only hear it but FEEL it too. Even when performed live, i close my eyes. I love Elea too and On the Box.

In this order. Serenity grabbed me from the beginning and the instrumentals on 'Contagion' are a great 'rest' in the album.

I actually thought the instrumentals on Contagion make you move fast to the other songs.
(That didn't sound good in english... :()

'Riding The Tide' is very good, but it's more like Genesis than Arena. When I heard it I thought "Arena is cloning some Genesis embryos". They have their own sound really, but it is shown in other instrumentals (like Confrontation ;D).
It's still a GREAT instrumental.
(Arena is better in doing instrumentals than Genesis (or any other band for that matter).)

Actually... I think there's nothing wrong with the numbers...


I mean... there are 24 votes made which should be 100%, right?
12 = 50%
and 6 = 25% (Riding The Tide)

The one with the problem (Confrontation for example) has 2 votes.

When 6 is 25% then 2 is (25/6=) 8,3333333333333333333333333333333% or better yet 8 and one third.

2 should be 8,3333333333333333333333333333333, but because the number 3 is repeated a million times (even more, it's infinitive) it is reduced to 8.300000000000001.

It looks odd though.

This way madness lies and Serenity from me! If only that calculator could round thouse numbers to something sensible

Confrontation dosent seem to really hit it off with me unfortunately, i think its because it seems like a huge intro to a much longer song, and then it finishes and i feel a bit dissapointed. It's alright I guess but I prefer others.

Man, I can't choose... I like so many, so much... :-\

I love it!  It just sounds right.  That's what confrontation music sounds like!  And it fits the Contagion story perfectly. :)

Can't add to my vote, can I? Anyway, at the moment the other two would be Serenity and This Way Madness Lies, but having only just got into the band they might change!  :D

If the hanging tree instrumental bits where put togheter for an instrumental, THAT would be my fav.

Right now I'm going to listen to all of them to make a proper vote :)

After the first listening (Skipping the songs I knew I wouldn't like enough and the songs I really like) I got this list:
- The Offering
- Isolation
- Fallen Idols
- This way madness Lies
- Confrontation
- Serenity
- Elea
- The Vanishing Act
- Riding the Tide

From these I really like Vanishing Act and Riding the Tide, so I left those out too, but I can't choose the third...

One more listen then...

I quickly decided that the 3 'The Cry' songs don't make it. I love the songs, but I always have to be in the right mood to listen to that album. This Way Madness Lies goes too, for me there is not enough variation in the song.
Leaves me with:
- Confrontation
- Serenity
- Elea

Confrontation has a powerfull drive and the 'chanting' is a nice variation to it, Serenity is probably the instrumental that best describes it's name: The song IS serenity. Elea... The chanting again, the way it builds up and then: The guitar! And then the suddon drop to the whale song that melts into The Hanging Tree.

Ok, I must make a decision:
Elea is a marvelous song, but without The Hanging Tree, it doesn't have a good ending imo.
Serenity is an amaaaaazing song too, but it fits best with the album. If the question was "What instrumentals fit best with the album the're on?" Elea and Serenity would be #1 and #2, so Confrontation it is. The song is great on the album, but I think it also makes a stand on it's own as a song.
