Title: Gigs
Post by: Teunis on Thu, 2014-08-07, 19:58:27
Couldn't find a topic about gigs. Seems a good idea to me to create a thread where we can discuss upcoming gigs or gigs with great memories from the past we want to share. Here are the gigs I attended:

Band                                                             Date             Venue          Location

It's a bit of a chaos but at least you get the idea. Don't know how to get it right, really tried ;).

I've preordered tickets for a gig on 27th September from the legendary band Focus with Thijs van Leer. He also guested on (an) Ayreon album(s). It's in my hometown, so I'll be walking to the venue. Never did that before as you can see.

Curious what you will post here ....  8).

I've preordered tickets for a gig on 27th September from the legendary band Focus with Thijs van Leer.
That was yesterday ... and I really enjoyed it! Though I didn't like every song, I enjoyed the skills of every single musician. All of them got the room to show them. The drummer is 68 years old, impressed what he showed last evening 8). Their hits 'Hocus Pocus' and 'Sylvia' were the highlights. Thijs van Leer announced all of the tracks in his special way with dry humour :).

And you? Any upcoming gigs or memories of gigs you want to share?

My wife surprised me with a ticket for a gig on 19th December in Hedon - Zwolle: Kayak 8). It'll be one of the last gigs with lead vocalists Edward Reekers (who also sang with Ayreon) and Cindy Oudshoorn. Such a shame :-\.

Just back from the Kayak gig, it was really excellent. What a great live band! Love this kind of symphonic music, Ton Scherpenzeel on keyboards really is a treat 8). Also the (harmony) vocals were awesome. Half of the setlist was from the new album Cleopatra ~ The Crown Of Isis and of course their greatest hit 'Ruthless Queen' was played. The mix between the vocals of mr. Edward Reekers and Cindy Oudshoorn was just perfect. Had a great evening *horns*. Now bring on the Arena gig at the same venue, just 15 kilometres away :).

Just read on Facebook that the Dutch neo-progband 'Silhouette' will play in my hometown Kampen on 18th April. They released four albums so far: 'A-maze', 'Moods', 'Across The Rubicon' and 'Beyond The Seventh Wave'. It is very keyboard oriented music, love it. Will definitely attend this gig 8).

The support act has been announced: Cartographer. Also a Dutch band, which only plays instrumental prog. Let's hear if they can keep me interested, because after a while most instrumental music bores the pants off me ::).

There is a chance that I will attend the Gentle Storm gig @ Hedon Zwolle on 3rd April. Not sure though.

And you guys, any concerts on the roll?

Was hoping to see Neal Morse in Zoetermeer but the concert is sold out.
That's it really.
Muse would be nice, but I won't buy a weekend ticket for Pink Pop just to see Muse.

And an astonishing gig it was. What a great singers are Marcela Bovio and Anneke van Giersbergen. And quality musicians were present on stage as well. It was *horns*. The Gentle Storm even played a few Ayreon tracks and some tracks from Anneke's former band 'The Gathering'. And a Devin Townsend track ;). Also 'Wish You Were Here' from Pink Floyd, just Anneke with an acoustic guitar was impressive! Had a great time, up to the next gig in two weeks!

Attended a gig in my hometown yesterday evening. Two bands for the price of just 6 euros ;). Cartograper, a Dutch postrock band from Tilburg, The Netherlands opened the evening. Technically they were excellent and they had loads of fun on the stage, but it was not my kind of music. It was instrumental and after about three tracks it got boring. at least for me. But okay, the main reason I attended this gig was the second band: Silhouette, also from Holland and they're playing keyboard oriented neoprog. But also the guitarist got the room to shine. Really enjoyed their performance 8). The band received the iO-pages award yesterday. The fans voted last year's album  'Beyond The Seventh Wave' as the best Dutch 2014 album. You can hear it on on Progstreaming.

Went to see Toto yesterday @ Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam, which was sold out. Great venue by the way! What can I say: Toto proved once more why they are still my favourite band. Nice setlist, perfect sound and the band played really tight. Toto forever!

No definite plans for other gigs in 2015 yet. Probably Riverside on 17th October, Hedon Zwolle. Very tempting :).

Couldn't resist, purchased tickets for the above mentioned gig today. Looking forward to it, the track from the new album I heard and an other teaser are sounding very promising 8). It'll be the first time I'll see them live. Read a lot of great reviews from the people who saw them at Night Of The Prog (Loreley) last weekend.

I attended the Riverside gig yesterday @ Hedon Zwolle. The support acts weren't my cup of tea, too metalish, but Riverside were in top form. They played a mix from new and old songs. Personal highlight for me was the song 'The Same River' from the debut album, goosebumps! They played for 1.45 hours. Mariusz Duda was impressive, both his bass skills and his voice. The sound was perfect, like always at this venue. Go and see them if you get the chance. Setlist yesterday:http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/riverside/2015/hedon-zwolle-netherlands-33f450ed.html (http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/riverside/2015/hedon-zwolle-netherlands-33f450ed.html).

The Agent Fresco gig yesterday was great. They played a short setlist (70 minutes), but quality is more important than quantity. Next gig ... don't know yet. Infloyd in February is tempting. I'm not fond of coverbands, but the real Pink Floyd won't play again. They'll be playing the Roger Waters album 'Amused To Death' and some PF classics.

The cancelled gig of 16th April from Aisles is now scheduled for 22th October. And my brother wants me to go with him to an Antimatter gig on 29th October in Apeldoorn (because he doesn't own a driver's license ;)). I still doubt. I do like the music, but it's an unplugged gig. After a while I always get bored. Still time left to think about it.

My wife booked a weekend at a hotel on the occasion of our wedding day next week, so I can't go :).

Yesterday I attended a gig of two bands in my hometown: Profuna Ocean (Dutch band) and Aisles from Chile. Really enjoyed both performances, the latter one caused goosebumps with me :). Unfortunately there were just about 30 people to witness the concert ::). The people who stayed at home were so wrong ... But on Saturday's there are about 5 prog concerts in the country and as far as I'm concert the promotion left to be desired.

next stop: Symfo Classics on 29th December @ Hedon Zwolle.

That was yesterday :). Really enjoyed it. The name is what they do: playing symfo classics. Usually I'm not into cover songs, but you won't hear (most of) the songs by the original artists like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Styx, Supertramp anymore. It's a very nice way to experience those songs live. Highlights: Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb and Genesis - Firth Of Fifth. Also a very great executed version of 'Child's Anthem' from Toto. Full setlist here (http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/symfo-classics/2016/hedon-zwolle-netherlands-bfb7592.html) if you're interested ;).

New gig added: The release show from the new Knight Area album 'Heaven And Beyond' which will be released on 10th February. The show in on 11th February @ De Boerderij, Zoetermeer 8).

And you, did you attend or have you planned gigs?

Glad you enjoyed it.

Still, these are all the greatest hits which have all been on the radio: Turn It On Again, Roundabout, Owner Of A Lonely Heart, Kayleigh, Comfortably Numb, Dust In The Wind. Not bad songs of course. But no real prog songs.

There are a few exceptions. Firth Of Fifth is of course a real classic in prog. Did they also play the piano intro?

Neither. I would have liked to go to the IQ gig past month, but was too busy with work. Also there's the ARW gig in (I think it was) February. That's Anderson Wakeman and Rabin, all of Yes. But, again, work is getting in the way, and I want to save my money a bit.

I bought the album before the show and had it signed by all the band members afterwards. Nice to talk to them too. Fortunately we booked a hotel, because it was snowing yesterday evening. Today the conditions were way better to travel home. It was awesome, best Dutch progband, but I am biased I'm afraid ;).

Blackbriar/Kingfisher Sky (14th October, 't Ukien, Kampen)
Unfortunately Kingfisher Sky cancelled their tour to concentrate on their new album, it will take place next year. Beyond God, an other female fronted (gothic) metal band replaced them. They were the support act now and played about 45 minutes. Really enjoyed their show, goosebumps at the first track. The female vocalist, begin twenties, had a beautiful voice (and looks ::)). Just wow. Their set was way too short as far as I'm concerned.
Blackbriar, never heard of them before, seems to be well known though. I noticed a single of them has 5,2 million views on YouTube! Well, they really know how to play their instruments, but it was a bit too heavy for my taste. The (also good looking) singer reminded me a bit of Kate Bush, but her way of singing was a bit over the top. They played an hour and a half. I had a great evening anyway, didn't regret going (walking) to the venue :). Sadly their were about 35 people attending the gig.

Went to the Ayreon Universe concert last Friday, it really was spectacular. Had a great time.  :)
Now I want to go to the Pendragon concert in Zoetermeer, Netherlands. Arena is on the roll as well.

My colleague also went to the Sunday show and she also said the same.
She also said that Damian Wilson wanted to kiss her right after she gave away her last beer coin to him.
She said she didn't like that. ;D

It really was beyond awesome.  *horns*
I only ordered one ticket but in retrospect, that was a huge mistake.
Should've bought three tickets, for the three shows.

Arjen said that although he's not really thrilled to perform on stage any time, even he believed that this wouldn't be a one-off.
There will be more Ayreon shows in the future.
Lets see if he can keep that promise. ;)

Attended the gig of the Pink Floyd coverband Infloyd yesterday evening @ Hedon Zwolle. They played the entire albums 'The Final Cut' and 'Animals' and many more songs like 'Wish You Were Here', 'Comfortably Numb' and 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'. Needless to say I had a great evening, it was awesome! Highly recommended, it's unlikely that we see the 'old masters' playing live again, this performance was very close. Just wow 8).

Attended the Bjørn Riis gig in Helmond yesterday evening. The guitarist from the Norwegian band Airbag released his solo EP 'Coming Home'. Bought it there and had it signed by him. It was a great evening with both solo and Airbag classics!

I think i'll be there as well. :)

Went to some concerts in the past year.
Muse, Halestorm (with In This Moment as special guests and they were awesome.)

January started quite good with the concert of Dream Theater at Afas, Amsterdam.
It was a great concert, played Scenes from a Memory it its entirety but James LaBrie did a poor job singing it all.
He has always been the weakest link in the band but now he's getting older and it's getting worse.

Yesterday I was at the Blind Ego and Kingcrow gig @ Hedon Zwolle. It was *horns*. I always wanted to see Blind Ego. I own all their albums and it was the main reason to go. In the meantime, after the gig was published, I listenened to all the albums from Kingcrow on Spotify. But after seeing them live yesterday I consider myself a fan, just wow 8). Next stop: Pendragon on 15th April, same venue. Looking forward to it. I've read so many raving reviews on their new album 'Love Over Fear'. I like it, but the click isn't there (yet). Maybe after hearing the whole album live it is coming to life :).

Cool! 8) The new Blind Ego album is really nice! I was tempted to go, but my work schedule didn't allow it.

The new Pendragon is getting a hype on almost all progressive rock websites. To bad it's not on Spotify. I think I'll wait a bit and then decide if I want it or not.

You are in for a treat! After attending the sold out gig in Zoetermeer yesterday I just have to say that Pendragon seem to be at the top of their game these days. The "first 40 years" anniversary title (implying there will be another 40) was tongue in cheek of course, but they are certainly on a roll with a sense of "second youth" and energy about them. They have delivered a career highlight with Love Over Fear - it really is a grower - and it translated very well to the stage, with Mark Westwood stepping in to provide additional acoustic guitar in several of the new tracks. Truth And Lies is my personal fave of the new tracks and really got under my skin yesterday, but it was simply great throughout. I missed the 40 years gig (waited too long to get a ticket and then it was sold out) and am very glad I did not miss out this time. I have been following Pendragon since the nineties when I was discovering prog, my entry point Window Of Life is still my favourite Pendragon album, and it is great to see the band so alive and kicking.

Hi Erik, good to see you again :). Yeah, I've seen the enthusiastic reactions on the Pendragon gig last night @ De Boerderij. I'll keep on playing the album, often the best albums have to sink in ... . Really looking forward to the gig and I've heard my all time favourite Pendie track 'Breaking The Spell' is on the setlist  8). Good to read you had a great time. I've also been following them since the 90's. 'The Window Of Life' is my favourite. The last few albums didn't do that much to me and with 'Love Over Fear' they are on the way back. And also fun to read the daily stories from the tour from Clive Nolan ;D.

Hi Teunis, yes Breaking The Spell is on the setlist - it is my alltime Pendie track as well 8). I have read that Nick Barrett wanted to back to that classic sound of tracks like Breaking The Spell and Paintbox and indeed there are many spine tingling solos on Love Over Fear. I rather like the last few albums and think they had taken their trademark sound as far as they could with Not Of This World. The new direction from Believe onwards works for me but many not be everyone's cup of tea I guess. Meanwhile Clive's tour diary is a fun read as you say ;D.
