What do you think of spoken-word and other non-singing/non-instrumental sound effects in music?

In the words of Frank Zappa, "Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar."

Sometimes adds to the song, sometimes detracts from it.
8 (66.7%)
Usually interesting and enjoyable.
2 (16.7%)
It's rare that creative musicians don't use some of this, and if they don't, they should.
0 (0%)
It doesn't make much impression on me one way or the other.

Another example : Guns N'Roses cover of Knocking On Heaven's Door. I am really addicted to the passage with the sound of phone keys and spoken words. I think of Nicole Kidman picking her telephone and calling me  :) She was really cute in this movie (see another thread for its  title   ;)) as far as I remember.

So you've come of age
And so you want to meet God
Sure you can
He's right here next to me

Damn, again  :P : it seems that it is one my fave mistakes ...

I edited the post : I don't want to offend Nicole in case she would think of calling me ...  :)

The Butterfly Man

A good example of what this thread's about is Evergrey's 'When The Walls Go Down'. This is an instrumental song and features a quiet piano intro followed by various sampled voices and some strings. The tension just builds and builds as the voices are getting more emotional every second...Until there's an explosion of heavy guitar riffs and the song has a real heavy ending. *horns*

??? I've got one lovely little girl whose first birthday will come  soon ... unless you speak of Nicole (or Keira with or without cheese  ;D) and in this case, yes, you're right but I wouldn't really call them my partners ...

I've noticed a trend, especially but not exclusively in prog, toward using spoken recordings and other sound effects not directly connected to the music as parts of the songs (sometimes just in the intros, sometimes more).  There's no question in my mind that some of the songs that include these things are very good, even great in some cases, but I'm curious as to whether people think this improves the music, takes away from it, or something in-between.

I was playing an album a couple of weeks back called 'Jugula' it's by Roy Harper and Jimmy Page.
There's a track on that album called "Bad Speech".  It's an interesting, and segues into the next track "Hope" really well.

Iggy

I've been listening to alot of Pink Floyd recently and I think they have managed to insert random sounds and talking brilliantly throughout the years.

I do fall into the only when they are good at it camp though. Some of them can be very irritating.

I completely agree with you on this. The telephone ring and the voice in the background really add something to the song.
Let your conscience decide !
