Project: Other musical styles than Prog?
« on: Sun, 2005-12-11, 12:15:18 »
Hello,

I am a German student of English- and American literatures, cultural studies and media studies. As I am as well a great fan of progressive rock music, I am by now working on a project comparing the Gothic scene with the Prog scene (if there is such a thing). One problem of my work is, that there is no such thing as a study of the Prog scene, while the Gothic scene (at least in Germany) is explored to some extent. If there is literature on Prog, its mostly about the music, a fact which is one argumentative aspect in my work. This is why I am launching some polls in this and some other forums in order to raise some statistical data so that my argumentation which will focus on my personal experiences mostly with the German scene but have some international references as well has some numbers to back it up.

If I can raise enough votes, I may even come back on that subject matter in a later project which could then deal with the prog scene exclusively, and who knows, maybe I will someday even be able to make a book out of it, but that's still just a fantasy.

So, I would be glad if some (or some more) could participate in the polls that I'll launch here. I'll count the results someday in January 2006.

Danke.

How many polls are you going to make? Wouldn't it be better to make an online-poll/survey?

Hello,

I think, it's going to be 6 polls on the whole. The problem is that I have neither a home page nor the knowledge to programm one large, comprehensive poll. But that's certainly something I plan for the case of a larger study. The problem right now is that I have to get some numbers until January. Should I choose to re-explore the scene for a larger, more extensive work, I will raise new polls and create a home page (rather: have it created ;) ).

Danke.

Yes, I am a rock fan, it doesn't have to be prog.

90% prog I would say. Not counting what the radio playes at my work, since I don't have a vote in a dj's choice ;)
Other 10% is classic-rock, metal, hard rock, pop-rock, rock 'n roll.... Well, you get the idea :)

For me it's 80% Prog and Prog Metal, I like plenty of other music but I keep coming back to the Prog!

I can't think of any band I listen to other than prog-bands.

Muse has recently been added to the progarchives.com catalogue, and I think progarchives have the right to say which band is prog and which not.

Phil Collins is also very good (not archived in progarchives but he played in Genesis... so it IS related)

OK OK, I admit I listen to movie- and game-soundtracks.

But I voted for me being an prog-aholic.

Where did the guest come from??
Now we need anti-guest spray...

I still have one in the cellar. (a jar of anti-guest spray that is, not a guest)
I use it on birthday parties for uninvited people.
Problem is, it kills every sort of guest. There's no distinction. Only extinction...

It seems so.
Probably only on the Valacar's Project subforum.

Now that I mention it, where's Valacar?

Cap, I suggest that you remove Valacar's Project as fast as possible. Valacar doesn't seem to be around any longer, and the guest intrusions are very disconcerting.
