Title: Doctor Who
Post by: PH on Thu, 2008-07-10, 11:42:28
As some of you have noticed, I was away for a couple of weeks.
Why?
Because I discovered Doctor Who! ;D

On the Frost message board, a lot of people kept talking about Doctor Who, so I decided to give it a go.

I've watched the first three seasons of the revived series and thought it was fantastic!
From the start of episode "Rose" with Christopher Eccleston as the ninth Doctor till "Last Of The Time Lords" which has the excellent David Tennant as the tenth Doctor.

I think my favourite episodes are:

Season 1
- Father's Day
- The Empty Child
- The Doctor Dances
- Bad Wolf
- The Parting Of The Ways

Season 2
- The Girl In The Fireplace
- Rise Of The Cybermen
- The Age Of Steel
- Army Of Ghosts
- Doomsday

Season 3
- 42
- Blink
- Utopia
- The Sound Of Drums
- Last Of The Time Lords

I'm planning to watch season 4 very soon.

I'm sure there are other Doctor Who fans here, right?

Dya know what's weird, Paxi:  I'v never seen an episode of Dr. Who.

And dya know what else is weird:  I aint gonna make any judgements about Dr. Who  ;)

Now that you'v brought it to my attention, I'm actually reading about it on Wikipedia, and I'l make an effort to watch some episodes  :)

I utterly love the first 3 series, superb stories, great humour and I want to make babies with Billie Piper great acting.  I've been quite disappointed with series 4, the plots seem to lack the clever twists and links, plus Catherine Tate annoys me.  I ended up buying the first 3 series on DVD, so I impressed was I, but probably won't bother with series 4 unless I see it really, really, cheap.

I wouldn't class myself as a Doctor Who fan, as such, I just loved the episodes because I thought they were great drama.  Stuff like 'Blink' and 'Father's Day' completely outclasses most of the junk on TV these days.

Are you my mommy?  *horns*

On IMDb, Doctor Who gets User Rating 8.8 out of 10 (7,151 votes), which is very high, so that hightens my interest.

Here is what "Neil from United Kingdom" writes about Doctor Who on IMDb:

"As a child I used to love the Dr Who series and apparently I used to hide behind the sofa whenever the Daleks appeared. I think it must have been the voice. But over time the whole idea lost so much of its charm that it became a real pain to watch.

Well all that has changed, Every nostalgic moment I ever had about the doctor has come flooding back with this highly enjoyable reanimation of a childhood favourite, even though I am now well into my thirties.

Christopher Eccleston is great in the lead and Billy Piper makes the archetypal sidekick. This new incarnation is full of the humour and tongue in cheek appeal that I hoped it would be. I just hope it keeps going as it started.

I have to give this a ten even if it's just because it's filmed in my home town of Cardiff, if not for the fact that is gives me a glimmer of what I liked in this series from when I was a very small child.

Thanks to everyone involved and keep it coming."

And  MitchellXL5:

"I have now had the pleasure of watching through the fourth episode and can say that I think the new series is a delight - and no less a delight than the classic series. As with each Doctor, this is another take on the concept and it's a sharp one at that.

Eccleston's Doctor is the most alien Doctor of them all and his realization is a pleasure. Piper's Rose is the real surprise of the show, she's just very likable and has chutzpah.

This series seems to be less about the Doctor versus aliens than really examining the Doctor's relationship with his companions - why he does it, the psychology of a guy who would keep taking on these people and showing them the whole of the universe - and using the science fiction action as a backdrop. It's very Alan Moore actually. The Doctor comes off as a mix of overeager, kind, self-serving, egotistical, innocent, and many other traits. This is the most complex Doctor after Tom Baker."

Well, today I watched the Christmas special of Doctor Who: "The Next Doctor".

To me it was not really that great. Though, after not having seen Doctor Who for more than four months, it was nice to see it again.
I'm looking forward to the new series (or rather the specials in 2009).
Too bad David Tennant is leaving... :'(

Yes, the quality of acting on Dr Who has always been very good.

When I was very young I used to watch Dr Who with my foster brother from behind the sofa! I know it seems quite tame by modern standards but back in the '70s it was scary as hell. :o

I've always thought the Christmas specials were a little too camp/pantomime for my tastes, but I liked this year's more than the previous ones.  Also, I thought it was generally better than the last series which didn't exactly set my mind on fire.

Each to their own, of course, but I could have happily lived my life without seeing Ms Tate as the loathsome Donna Noble. ;)  Bring back Billie! :P

To be honest, I thought Donna Noble was really great! But perhaps that's because I don't know Ms Tate. You might have other associations?

And how much I loved Rose (in more ways than one, probably ;D), I think she changed a lot when I saw her in the fourth series. Maybe because she stayed too long in the parallel universe.
'Doomsday' was such a brilliant episode, I think it would have been better if we never saw Rose again after that. Now it seems like there's still an opening and a possibility to go between the two parallel worlds...

Anyway, the Christmas special wasn't enough for me. I want more Doctor Who!! But instead we get less this year... :(

Me and my Doctor Who fixation... :P

In the Doctor Who special, to be aired tomorrow (that is today) at 17.35hrs, the actor playing the new Doctor will be giving his or her initial reaction to being the new, eleventh incarnation of one of television's most loved characters.

What?! It can't be a "her", that's just not right!

But... but... it's gotta be a man!
How else could he have snogged Madame de Pompadour? Or be the grandfather of Susan Foreman? Or fall in love with Joan Redfern? Or have a relationship with Professor River Song?

:o Maybe River Song IS THE NEW REINCARNATION OF THE DOCTOR?!?!?!
She had a sonic screwdriver, right?

I enjoyed the old Dr. Who episodes that I used to watch on American Public Television back in the 1980s.

Completely crazy, off the wall and quite entertaining.

They probably would have been even funnier had I been drunk.

Still, Michelle Ryan is a lot easier on the eye than Catherine Tate ever was :P

I must confess I've always found Mr Bean as funny as a gunman in a school, but then I've never been much for the slapstick style of humour.  On the other hand, for me Blackadder (first series excepted) is one of the funniest things in the history of the world ;D

Going back to the Dr Who special, I watched it a second time and still didn't much like it.  IMO, most of the proper series are ten times better *horns*

It's quite possible.  I think we get the British stuff when it's at least a few years old.  Similarly, you'll note that they aren't still filming new episodes of the Waltons here.  ;D

I agree on both counts, although I enjoyed the first series too, particularly the parts with the turnips.  I'll admit, though, it was somewhat harder to follow than the rest of them.

Not sure, but it sounds like it could be the one with the Cybermen in, and humans being processed into Cybermen inside Battersea Power Station, ie the building featured on the cover of Pink Floyd's Animals.  I'm a bit rusty in the plot, but I think there was some kind of parallel universe in that one.  There normally is ;)

Sounds like you need a crash course in the Doctor - it's far too complicated to cover here.  If you've not already seen it, check out the official BBC site at http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/ (http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/) and then Google for some of the many fan sites.  As the series has been running for many decades your question isn't easy to answer! 8)

Just want to say that I've seen the fifth series and thought it was pretty good.
I'm still in "getting used to the Matt Smith Doctor"-phase, but it seems like he's doing fine!
Personally I thought some of the episodes were very poor, especially the last two episodes.
They were confusing, not funny and boring. This left me disappointed.
Stories like second series' "Doomsday" or the three-parter "Utopia"/"The Sound Of Drums"/"Last Of The Time Lords" and also "The End Of Time" were much and much better as a closure.

But there were also some outstanding moments like in the two-parter "The Time Of Angels" and "Flesh And Stone". Also, I think "The Hungry Earth" and "Cold Blood" were very enjoyable. Brilliant stories. Same goes for "Vincent And The Doctor". Great acting too.

Since I see Steven Moffat as a more than qualified writer, I'd like to see where this will go.

Well, anyone seen the episodes up until now?
I've seen them and I liked them all.
I still feel the best episodes Steven Moffat has written are the ones he wrote before he became the main writer of the series.
But this new series with Matt Smith aren't bad in any case. They are much better than I expected them to be. I can see David Tennant in him. Does anyone know what I mean?

I'm not sure. I really like Doctor Who, but the fifth and sixth series (up until now) are not my favourite.
But it's not because of Matt Smith, I think he's an excellent Doctor. Very excentric character, which makes him more of a real old-fashioned Doctor, where Christopher Ecclestone and David Tennant were almost action/adventure heroes.

I'm not sure why I feel this way, because I absolutely love the stories Steven Moffat has written for the previous series. Perhaps my expectations were too high. Or perhaps Steven is overdoing the space/time concept a little bit.

Anyway my all time favourite episodes up til now (since the revival) are these:

Series 1:
Rose
The End Of The World
Father's Day
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
Bad Wolf/The Parting Of The Ways

Series 2:
New Earth
The Girl In The Fireplace
Rise Of The Cybermen/The Age Of Steel
Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday

Series 3:
Smith And Jones
42
Human Nature/The Family Of Blood
Blink
Utopia/The Sound Of Drums/Last Of The Time Lords

Series 4:
The Doctor's Daughter
Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead
Midnight
The Stolen Earth/Journey's End

Specials:
The Waters Of Mars
The End Of Time, Part One/The End Of Time, Part Two

Series 5:
The Eleventh Hour
The Time Of Angels/Flesh And Stone
The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
Vincent And The Doctor

Series 6:

A bit too early to tell I think.
The Impossible Astronaut/Day Of The Moon could have made one really good episode. Instead they made it a two-parter, I thought it was a bit too slow. And a bit too American perhaps. :P ;)
I really liked The Curse Of The Black Spot, so that's already one.
The Doctor's Wife was weird, but still nice. The Rebel Flesh was another good one. I wonder where this will lead us to. Along with The Almost People it might become another great two-parter.

So, that's a little review. Hope you liked it. :P

Almost at the end of the 6th series I have to say that Doctor Who isn't the same as it used to be.
Moffat's episodes in the first four series were the best. They were clever, and I really liked it that 'time' played a great part in these stories. But now he's overdoing it. And series 5 and 6 have been filled with paradoxes and hard-to-follow stories. Still some great ideas were hidden in these episodes.

Now some spoilers:

I love how River Song is actually Amy Pond's daughter. Just a pity it had to be in the two-parter "A Good Man Goes To War/Let's Kill Hitler" which I think was very tiresome at times. "Night Terrors" was a bit better, but I thought "The Girl Who Waited" was very exciting once again.
"The God Complex" was kind of strange. Overall I didn't like it. Most of the time it had to do with the 'praise him' and all the other religious things that made me feel a bit uncomfortable.
The best thing about this episode was that Amy Pond and Rory Williams were left behind at their home. Not that I didn't like Amy and Rory, because I liked them! They were very nice companions! But it just felt so right to leave them there. No big exit, or deaths or whatever, just a simple goodbye.

I haven't seen a Doctor Who episode for a long time now.
So this is the seventh season? I'll have to get back to it ASAP.
So what happened to Amy and Rory?
I liked Rory a lot (in a not-gay way).

So Matt Smith quit? Wow... that's quick! Totally missed the seventh season. Guess I have to set that right.

The name of this new fellow didn't ring a bell, but when I saw his picture I recognised him immediately! That guy played a big role in Torchwood's third season. I loved his character.

As much as I love (especially) Tennant's incarnation, a slightly older Doctor might be a good decision.

I have been watching the series a lot lately, thanks to syfy channel and although I'm a bit sad to see the other one go (forgot his name, too lazy (again) to go search for it) I'm curious about the new fellow.

My sister's fond of it now. I gave it a try and watched a couple of episodes or more with her. I still don't get excited about it at all though. At least I've tried!  ;)

Two episodes in and progressing nicely  :)

A darker , older and more cantankerous Dr then we have seen for a long long time and it works for me

Still have a lot of catching up to do. But I'll get there eventually. I'm in last season with Matt Smith. Actually I'm looking forward to Twelve because while I like Eleven, I'm growing a bit tired of him and his mannerisms.

13th Doctor announced - Jodie Whittaker

Great choice as far as I am concerned  :)
